Classic Robotics Showcase & Invitational Will Highlight Hundreds of Youth and Many Outstanding Georgia Robotics Programs
Classic Robotics Showcase & Invitational Presented by Georgia Power Set to Bring Youth Together to Dialogue About Robotics, Technology and Much More
Atlanta, GA – September 20, 2011 – Robot enthusiasts will soon converge on downtown Atlanta with one destination in mind, the Georgia World Congress Center for a robotics showcase presented by long-standing partner Georgia Power. Friday, September 23, 2011 will mark the second year 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. has hosted this unique Robotics Showcase & Invitational during the Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic weekend. “Once again we will enable students who love math, science and technology to display the tremendous robotic projects they’ve designed, in a non-competitive environment,” stated John Grant, CEO, 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc.
This event became a natural extension of 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc.’s Summer of Invention and Innovation. This summer marked the second year and students logged 14,400 activity hours during the 8 week program. The robotics invitational will showcase robotic designs created by those students who now make up new FIRST LEGO® League teams. FIRST Robotics Challenge teams, as well as FIRST Tech Challenge teams from metro Atlanta, and surrounding Georgia counties, will provide demonstrations. Attendees will also have the opportunity to “operate a robot” and participate in informational talks during the day.
Keynote Speaker Kelvin M. Manning, NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Associate Director for Business Operations, will deliver current information about the evolving world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In addition, the 100 Scholars Robotics Alliance and Georgia Power have collaborated with Georgia Tech Robo Jackets, and Spelman SPELBOTS to create a fun-filled day of interactivity and learning while reinforcing STEM messaging. They will bring that message to over 750 students from Atlanta, Douglass County, Gwinnett County, Cobb County and Bibb County Schools.
“The Classic Robotics Showcase & Invitational and the Summer of Invention and Innovation are two shining examples of the work the Project Success Robotics Alliance is doing,” stated Bart Sudderth, 100 Robotics Alliance Program Administrator. “Students excel at math and science because they learn fun, tangible ways to apply it." The 100’s robotics program has a proven track record of students completing the program, graduating with honors and going on to pursue an education in engineering, such as: Joseph Tanner - Southern Polytechnic State, Jaimison Smith - Southern Polytechnic State, Denzel Thornton -- Tuskegee University, Broderick Bynum – University of Jacksonville,
- More –
Tesfa Ayana - Southern Polytechnic State, Christian Vinson -Tuskegee University, Vivian Stepp - Georgia Institute of Technology, Javier Heard – Devry and Nijel Rogers - West Point Military Academy.
Georgia Power is the presenting sponsor of e 100 Black Men of Atlanta's Project Success Robotics Alliance for the 8th year. The program’s goal of motivating young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math, aligns with Georgia Power's commitment to education and goal to recruit a quality work force of highly skilled employees. “This partnership and our commitment to education is a win for students, corporations, communities, our nation and the global economy,” said John Grant, CEO, 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc.
