Das wins double crown:

Guwahati: Defending champion Kalyan Kumar Das of Oil India (OIL) won double crown by winning the veteran's singles and Doubles title in the 23rd Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) Inter-unit Tennis Tournament, hosted by IBP Company Limited at BT tennis Courts at Kolkata from February 11 to 17.



Guwahati in semis:

Guwahati: Guwahati stormed into the semifinal of the Senior-Inter District Football Championship defeating Gossaigaon in a one sided match 9-0 held at Digboi on April 4. Padum Rabha scored hat-trick for the winning team. In the other match of the day played at Tinsukia Dibrugarh downed Morigaon 6-1 to earn the last fourth berth. Guwahati will play its semifinal match against Nagaon at Digboi, while in the other last four matches Dibrugarh will take on hosts Tinsukia in their home ground. Both the match will be held on April 6.

 

Coaches panel on April 7:

Guwahati: The panel of the different coaches to the appointed on adhoc basis for the National Games will be finalize at a meeting of the coaches committee to be held on April 7. The interview of the coaches recently held in the city and selection procedure will be completed on that day. Meanwhile, former international footballers Prasun Banerjee is all set to get the technical director post for the football team which will take part in the Games. The source said, they had already contacted the Arjun Awardee footballer and he gave positive response.



State cricketers for national camp:

Guwahati: Two state cricketers Swarupam Purkayasthta and Abu Nasim Ahamed will attend the trial camp in Mumbai to be organised by the CCI to select the cricketers for the summer coaching camp. CCI every year organize such type of camp and players from different part of the country attend the camp. This year, Assam Cricket Association has decided to send these two players. The trial camp will be held in Mumbai from April 15-17 and if both the cricketers selected they will be allowed to take part in the two months summer coaching camp which is scheduled to held from April 19. Former test cricketer Nori Contractor will supervise the camp. Meanwhile, the Assam Cricket Association selected 46 probables to prepare U-15 team, which will go to Gaziabad for an exposure tour. The probables will attend a camp at the Nehru Stadium from April 7.



CM praises win over Pak:

Guwahati: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has congratulated the Indian cricket team for their historic test victory over Pakistan. Gogoi in a message to the Indian captain Rahul Dravid said, Indian cricket team defeating Pakistan in their home ground. He also expressed hope that the team would bring more laurels to the country in the coming days.



Chandrakanta in U-17 national probable list:

Guwahati: Chandrakanta Basumatari again selected in the probables list for the U-17 Indian football camp to be held at Goa from April 8. Chandrakanta hails from Kokrajhar and earlier attend the similar camp in Kolkata. The Indian team will be selected from this camp which will go for exposure tour in some selected countries.



Guwahati team named:

Guwahati: Guwahati on April 1 announced 20 members squad for the senior Inter-district Football Championship being played at Tinsukia and Digboi simultaneously. The squad: Gobinda Boro, Dinesh Basumatari, Jenith Sharma, Subir Goswami, Birendra Narzari, Ghanakanta Rajbangshi, Debajit Barua, Lakahan Gayary, Kamal Chetri, Shibendra Gayary, Kamakhya Basumatari, Utpal Basumatari (Capt), Bimal Chakraborty, Padum Rabha, Amulya Das. Coach Kishore Chetri and manager Hem Das. Meanwhile, the tournament is marred by the withdrawal of the teams as three districts Kokrajhar, Karbi Anglong and Tezpur decided not to send their team although they confirmed their participation.



AFA action against Silchar DSA:

Guwahati: The Assam Football Association sought explanation from the Silchar District Sports Association (DSA) regarding the invitation of the foreign team, in the recently concluded Captain N M Gupta Football tournament, without proper permission. As per the rule if any association wants to invite foreign sides in a domestic tournament they must take permission from the All India Football Federation. But according to the AFA official the Silchar DSA did not take any such permission and they must face punishment. AFA has given seven days time to Silchar DSA to explain how it had happened and why they have violated the rule.



Volleyball tourney:

Guwahati: A five days long volleyball tournament was held at Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, Gerukamukh from March 23 to 27 amidst fanfare and enthusiasm. The tourney was inaugurated by Subhash roy, GM of NHPC Ltd. The final was held on March 27, between Halakbari and Gogamukha and Halakbari emerged winners.



Assam lift T Aao cup for second time:

Guwahati: After a tough fight of 120 minutes defending champion Assam lifted the T Aao Football title for the second time defeating host Manipur 4-3 held at Imphal on March 28. The match was goalless throughout the stipulated 90 minutes. Extra 30 minutes also not changed the scoreboard even after the tie breaker the score was level 2-2.



Lakhimpur win RG cricket title:

Guwahati: Lakhimpur lifted the RG Barua cricket title defeating Hailakandi by 58 runs at played Barpeta on March 28. In the second innings Lakhimpur bowled out for paltry 130 runs.



It's Assam vs Manipur in final:

Guwahati: Defending champion Assam will take on last year's runners up Manipur for the title clash of the T Aao Football Championship. Both the team on March 26 reached the final after overcoming stiff challenge from their opponent as Assam defeated SAI Red by 2-1 while Manipur beat Nagaland by a golden goal.



Senior soccer from March 31:

Guwahati: The Senior Inter-district Football Championship deferred for two days and it will be held from March 31 instead of March 29 at two different venues Tinsukia and Digboi respectively.



Parag to lead NF Rly team:

Guwahati: Parag Das will lead 18 members NF Railway team in the Inter-Railway Cricket tournament which is scheduled to be held at Nagpur. Mrigen Talukder was included in the team who missed the Nurruddin tournament due to injury. The team will leave for Nagpur on March 26.



Nurul Amin cricket postponed:

Guwahati: The Nurul Amin Cricket tournament postponed for an indefinite period as NF Rly will busy to play in the All India Rly Cricket meet. Informing this, the secretary of the ACA Bikash Barua said that new date will be declared later on. It may be mentioned here that as per the earlier fixture NF Rly has to play against Nagaon from March 26 but at the same day they will leave for Nagpur to take part in the Inter-Rly tournament.



Govt releases Games money:

Guwahati: The State Government has released first instalment of around Rs 5crore to the L&T who had been engaged for various construction work of the coming National Games 2005. A source from the sports department informed this and construction works are likely to be kicked off in full swing within a short period. Meanwhile as per the announcement the DONER also released its first instalment to the State Government Rs 22 crore. The sources also informed, a Singapore farm has shown interest to construct the Games village and Government is scrutinising their terms and condition.



Jwala, Kurian lift title:

Guwahati: G Jwala and S Kurian of BPCL lifted the women's doubles title in the PSPB Inter-Unit Badminton tournament being played at Duliajan on March 25. In the final Jwala and Kurian pair defeated A Deodhar (BPCL) and T Murgunde (IOCL) in a identical margin 15-6, 15-6. Veteran singles title was begged by Bipul Sharma of OIL B defeating S K Patet of ONGC 15-3, 15-6 but later pairing with Tiloj Raj Patet won the veterans doubles title. The pair defeated D K Katheria and A K Sharma 15-5, 15-14.



Assam in last four in T Aao soccer:

Guwahati: Assam romped into the semifinal of the Dr T Aao football championship defeating SAI Blue of Imphal 1-0 in their group match played in Imphal on March 22.



All Assam boxing from April 9:

Guwahati: The All Assam Boxing tournament will be held from April 9 to 10 at the Ulubari Boxing Club in the city. Ulubari boxing Club is organising the tournament. The organisers have requested the interested competitors to contact the club organising secretary.



Assam to take on SAI red in semis:

Guwahati: Assam downed Nagaland by 2-1 in a highly contested match of the league being played at Imphal on March 24. Although defending champion Assam and Nagaland confirmed their last four berth from Group 'A' before 24th March's outings but the outcome of the match was equally important for both the sides as it would decide the group champion. Assam in need of a draw to grab the top position in the group while Nagaland was in must win situation and the decider would be highly entertaining. Both side started the match with cautions note but still managed to make some opportunities maximum of which were wasted by the striking zone players of both sides.



Guwahati in Nurul Amin cricket final:

Guwahati: Guwahati defeated Tinsukia in a one sided match by an innings and 161 runs and romped into the final of the Nurul Amin Cricket tournament being held at Nagaon on March 24. Nuruddin Senior Inter-district runners up Guwahati was favourite in the match and they played according to their merit Tinsukia started their innings from their overnight score of 15 for two but quickly lost all their wickets and bundled out for 71 runs. In the other match of the tournament NF Rly will play against host Nagaon which is scheduled to be held from March 26. Although NF Rly informed the ACA that they could not play the match due to the engagement in the All India Railway Meet but a source from the Railway side said that they will take the final decision on March 25.



Assam will take on SAI blue on March 22:

Guwahati: Defending champion Assam will take on SAI Blue of Imphal in its next group league match of the T Aao football Championship to be held at Imphal on March 22.



Financial Institution lift title:

Guwahati: Financial Institution lifted the Inter-district Veteran Cricket title defeating ONGC by 48 runs in the final held at the Latasil ground on March 21. It is the batting of financial institution which shattered all hope of ONGC to claim the title. Invited to bat first financial institution scored 204 for nine wickets in 30 overs thanks to a fine half century from Rajkumar Das.



Veteran soccer tourney:

Guwahati: The third veteran Football tournament, organised by Duliajan Club will be held from March 27 to April 6 next at the Nehru Maidan, Duliajan. Altogether 15 teams including Coal India XI, OIL XI, IOC (AOD) XI, Dibrugarh XI are taking part in it.



Success of veterans' athletic team:

Guwahati: The Assam team bagged 45 golds, 53 silvers and 47 bronze medals in the recently concluded silver jubilee of the All India Veterans' Amateur Athletic Championship held at the Lal Bahadur Stadium, Hyderabad. The Assam contingent was consisted of 85 women athletes of age group ranging from 35 to 75 years and 123 men athletes of age group ranging from 40 to 80 years. Moreover Assam women group by winning the maximum number of medals in women section got the best 'Women Team' trophy of the championship.



Inter-district archery:

Guwahati: The second Jr Inter-district Archery Championship' 2004 will be held on March 24 and 25 under the aegis of Archery Association of Assam at Golaghat. The main object of arranging the championship at Golaghat is to popularize the game in the area, to explore the dotted talents providing competition podium, to inspire the local youths towards archery and to prepare the whole officials for the approaching 33rd National Games. To encourage the players the Archery Association of Assam will bestow cash reward to the top medal winners and those who come up to 5th ranking would be nominated for the National Games second phase selection trial.



Sadek to lead Guwahati in U-17 cricket:

Guwahati: Guwahati will take on Silchar in the quarter final of the U-17 Inter District Cricket Championship to be played at Barpeta from March 21. Sadek Imran choudhury will lead Guwahati in the two-day match while Gakul Sharma will be his deputy.



Young Blue beat Shantipur AC, lift 'B' division title:

Guwahati: Young Blue became the champion in the B Division Debabrata Banerjee Football League defeating Star Sporting by 4-0 in the Noonmati Refinery Ground on March 19. Although Shantipur goal difference helped Young Blue lift the title.



Seven state boxers in national camp:

Guwahati: Seven female boxers along with a coach from the State has been selected to attend the National Level Boxing Coaching Camp to be held at Shilaroo, Himachal Pradesh from March 25. The one-month camp is being organised by the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation.



ONGC romp into veterans cricket final:

Guwahati: ONGC (Jorhat) qualified for the final of the All Assam Veterans Cricket Tournament defeating Guwahati by four wickets in the Latasil ground on March 19. Batting first, Guwahati bowled out 162 runs in 24.3 overs. Purba Konwar scored 61 for his side while Dhruba Sabhapandit scalped five wickets to keep ONGC's hope alive. In reply ONGC reached the target in 29.1 overs with Prasanta Buragohain remaining not out on 44 while AC Julka, PJ Srutikar and Palash Boro scored 25, 24 and 23 respectively. In the second semifinal on March 20 Nalbari will play against financial institutes.



NF Rly lift title:

Guwahati: NF Railway regained the Senior Nuruddin Inter-district title, after a gap of three years, defeating Guwahati by virtue of the first innings lead at the Nehru stadium ground here on March 17. N F Railway set a victory target of 460 runs in minimum 48 overs for Guwahati and the host side managed to score 142 for five till the end of the match.



Archery championship:

Guwahati: The Second All Assam Junior Archery Championship will be held at Golaghat stadium from March 24. The competition will be held in the Indian round of 30 and 40 meter distance. The secretary of the Archery Association of Assam, Biju Malakar informed that the players below 18 years will be allowed to take part in the two days championship and first five place winner will get chance to attend the second phase camp for the National Games.



Soneswar lifts title:

Guwahati: The first All Assam Inter-institution Table Tennis Tournament concluded recently at Sivasagar ONGC Indoor Stadium which is organised by ONGC and Assam Table Tennis Association from March 11 to 14. In the championship about six organisation participated including OIL, RBI, NRL and about 30 players took part. In the nail biting men's single final, Soneswar Deka of OIL downed Chiranjib Deka of RBI.



Sophisticated cycles for Games preparation:

Guwahati: The president of the Cycling Association of Assam and IGP (training and armed force) Umesh Kumar on March 17 informed that the association will buy special cycle for the State players in view of the National Games practice. He also said the cost of a single cycle is around one lakh 25 thousand and the association is eagerly waiting for the cycle for the Games preparation.



AKA Hazarika elected VP of Rowing Federation of India:

Guwahati: AKA Hazarika, president Assam Boat Racing & Rowing Association has been elected to the post of vice-president of Rowing Federation of India. In the Annual General Meeting of the Rowing Federation of India held at Chandigarh recently a seventeen member executive committee was formed with Brig KP Sing as president and Col CP Sing as the secretary general.



Nalbari beat Media:

Guwahati: Nalbari entered into the next round of the all Assam Veterans Cricket tournament defeating Media XI by four wickets at the Latasil ground on March 15. Elected to bat first Media XI set a modest target of 154 runs in 23 overs. In reply, Nalbari reached the target in the penultimate over loosing six wickets.



Guwahati fight back in Nuruddin:

Guwahati: The final of the Senior Inter-district Cricket tournament for the Nuruddin Trophy reached to an interesting stage as Guwahati on March 15 came back strongly to finish the NF Railways first innings total for 410 runs. In reply, Guwahati is 95 for two at the stumps. After the first days play NF Railway was in a strong position as they amass 303 runs for four wicket. Guwahati bowler bowled some superb spell to restrict the Railway's total to 410 runs.



IOA unit lauds AOA efforts:

Guwahati: The Assam Olympic association (AOA) on March 15 got a boost in the preparation of the forthcoming National Games as the North East commission of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) rendered its support to AOA and also assured the sports lovers of the State that the Games will be held on time. The chairman of the IOA's North East commission and the former chief minister of the Mizoram Lal Thanhawla on March 15 visited various proposed venues of the National Games and after the inspection he expressed that the place of work is very good in various proposed sites and if it continues without interruption than the Games will be held on time.



Rly on the verge of title win:

Guwahati: NF Railway is on the verge to lift the Nuruddin Senior Inter-District Trophy, courtesy poor batting performance of Guwahati said in the first innings. In reply, to Railway first innings total of 410, Guwahati on March 16 finished their first innings at 187 runs. Later, Railway took their lead to 365 runs as they are 142 for 2 in the second innings at the stumps.



Assam down Sikkim in opener:

Guwahati: Defending champion Assam opened their account in the T Aao Football Championship as Assam beat Sikkim 3-0 in a group league match played at Imphal on March 16. Assam dominated the match from the beginning and scored three goals through Bhim Kanta Sonowal, Sanjiba Rangpi and Padum Rabha. The Assam boys got several opportunity to increase the margin. Assam will now meet Mizoram in their next match on March 20. It may be mentioned here that Assam is on Group 'A' along with Sikkim, Nagaland, SAI (Blue) and Mizoram.



GCCC lift Guwahati Challenge Trophy:

Guwahati: Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre (GCCC) lifted the Guwahati Challenge Trophy defeating Santipur AC by 60 runs at the Latasil ground here on March 12. Batting first, GCCC piled up 181 in 34.2 overs. Salil Sinha of GCCC scored 31. Nekibur Rahman claimed three wickets for 40 runs but his good effort went in vain as Santipur team bowled out for paltry 121 runs.



Janak to lead Assam in T Aao tourney:

Guwahati: Janak Basumatary will lead the 20 members State team in the T Aao Football Championship scheduled to be held at Imphal from March 16. The team announced by the Assam Football Association (AFA) on March 12 consist of two goalkeepers, seven defender, five mid-fielders and six strikers. The defending champion will leave for Imphal on March 13 where they will play their first match on March 16 against Sikkim.



Ranjit Sing in national team:

Guwahati: State fencer Ranjit Sing selected in the Indian Squad who take part in the World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship will be held Bulgaria from April one. The secretary of the Assam fencing Association Uttam Kashyap informed that eleven members team will take part in the championship, where the N Biswajit Mitai from Assam will accompany the team as the coach. Meanwhile, Ranjit will attend the camp where from Indian team will be selected for the Asian Senior Fencing Championship to be held at Manila from April 19.



Star CCA to meet GCCC in final:

Guwahati: Star CCA will meet GCCC in the final of the U-14 Biswajit Gogoi Trophy Cricket championship to be held at the Noonmati ground on March 14.



Karate officials meet on March 14:

Guwahati: The executive committee meeting of the All Style Karate Do Association will be held on March 14 to discuss and finalise the plan and programme of the forthcoming National Games. The meeting will be held at the Assam Olympic association office. It may be mentioned here that the government of Assam has recently sanctioned Rs 30,000 to the association for the preparation of the Games.



Games renovation works from next month:

Guwahati: As part of the National Games preparation the renovation work in the RG Barua Sports complex will probably begin from the next week. This was informed by the deputy director of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department Rajib Prakash Barua. although he could not give the exact date of the work but it is almost certain that the work will begin in the next week.



NF Rly to meet Guwahati in final:

Guwahati: Guwahati will meet NF Railway in the final of the Senior Nuruddin Inter-district Cricket Championship to be held at the Nehru Stadium from March 14. Railway derailed Tinsukia in the semifinal by virtue of the first innings lead and earned the final ticket at the NFRSA ground here on March 11. RLY started their second innings at their over night score of 84 for two.



Nurul Amin Cricket from March 23:

Guwahati: Guwahati will take on Tinsukia in the inaugural match of the Nurul Amin Cricket Championship to be played at Nagaon from March 23. Nagaon Sports Association is going to organise the tournament under the aegis of Assam Cricket Association. The tourney will be held among the four semifinalist of the Nurudding Senior Inter-district Cricket tournament. The other teams of the tournament are NF Rly and host Nagaon. The schedule of the tournament: March 23-24 Guwahati vs Tinsukia, March 26-27 NF Rly vs Nagaon, March 29-31 (Final).



Media cricket final postponed:

Guwahati: The final of the 6th TVS cup Inter Media Cricket Championship could not held on March 11 as per schedule due to unavoidable circumstances. The organising committee officials said that the new date of the final will be announced later on.



AFA not happy with the T Aao fixture:

Guwahati: The way the T Aao Football Tournament was being organised last year frustrated many quarters and this time too, the possibility of an 'improvement' is remote if the tournament fixture being prepared by the organising committee is anything to go by. There is no doubt about this that an amateurish attitude is being reflected regarding the fixture as many teams will have to play two matches consecutively which will put huge pressure to the footballers mentally as well as physically. The Assam Football Association has already shown their unhappiness regarding the fixture and has sent an objection letter to the organiser along with a revised fixture for approval.



Assam cricketers to best physical training from next year:

Guwahati: Now a days, cricket demands more and more physical fitness from the players. But Assam cricketers are on the receiving end as there is not too much facilities available in the State. But if every thing goes according to the plan, then State cricketers will get one of the finest trainer of the country Ranadeep Moitra from the next years to improve their fitness level.
