History and Location: Chartered by the Georgia General Assembly on January 27, 1785, the University of Georgia is the nation’s first state-chartered university. In 1872, the University of Georgia was designated as a land-grant institution and in 1980 was accorded sea-grant college status. The University’s main campus and the health sciences campus are located in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, approximately 60 miles northeast of the state capital of Atlanta. Additional Georgia campuses are located in Griffin, Gwinnett and Tifton .
Academic Schools and Colleges:The University is comprised of seventeen schools and colleges: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, Ecology, Education, Engineering, Environment and Design, Family and Consumer Sciences, Forestry and Natural Resources, Graduate School, Journalism and Mass Communication, Law, Pharmacy, Public Health, Public and International Affairs, Social Work, and Veterinary Medicine. UGA is also home to the Georgia Health Sciences University/UGA medical partnership.
Academic Programs and Degrees Conferred:The University of Georgia is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges as well as a variety of discipline-specific accrediting agencies. As of Fall 2011, academic offerings include 22 bachelor’s degrees in 140 major fields; 35 master’s degrees in 137 major fields; the specialist in education degree in 19 major fields; 5 doctoral degrees in 96 major fields; and professional degrees in Law, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine. During the 2011-2012 fiscal year, the University awarded 6,891 bachelor’s degrees, 1,778 master’s and specialist degrees, 453 doctoral degrees, and 450 professional degrees.
Faculty: Full-time professorial faculty for the fall 2011 totaled 1,731. 95% of the full-time faculty were tenured or tenure-track, and 97% hold the doctorate or other terminal degree. Average salaries for the fiscal year 2011 were $107,100 for professors; $78,100 for associate professors; and $74,300 for assistant professors.
Alumni: Degree-holding living alumni from the University of Georgia total more than 278,000. 51% of UGA alumni graduated in the last two decades. 64% live in the State of Georgia with 57% of those in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The number of UGA alumni donors among the entire UGA degree-holding population totals 117,112. Of these 117,112 alumni donors who have made gifts to both academic and athletic ticket-priority programs, 42% made a gift within the last five years.
Enrollment:Fall 2012 enrollment totaled 34,519, which included 26,259 undergraduates, 6,606graduate students, and 1,654first professional students. 94% of undergraduates and 80% of graduate and professional students were enrolled on a full-time basis. The undergraduate student body was 43% male and 24% minority. 1,078 undergraduate and 1,355 graduate and professional students were from 121 foreign countries.
Admissions/Retention: 4,971 first-time freshmen enrolled for summer/fall 2012. 47.6% of all admitted freshmen enrolled, and 55% of all freshman applicants were admitted. The average total SAT score for entering freshmen was 1272 with an average writing score of 614. 4,332 or 87% of new freshmen attended over 400 different Georgia high schools. On average, approximately 94% of first-time full-time freshmen return for their sophomore year. Almost 3000 students applied as transfer students and 47% of them were offered admission resulting in just under 1400 enrolling for either summer or fall of 2012. 51% of accepted new graduate students enrolled in fall 2011.
Costs: Academic year 2012-2013 tuition and fees totaled $9,842 for new resident undergraduates and $28,052 for new nonresident undergraduates. Academic year 2011-12 estimated cost of attendance for resident undergraduates totaled $21,250. This amount included tuition and mandatory fees, books and supplies, room and board, and other expenses.
Finance: For fiscal year 2012, total revenues exceeded $1.33 billion and included $363 million from state appropriations. 18.8% of total operating expenditures were designated for instruction and 24% for research. Sponsored awards for fiscal year 2011 totaled $227,658,811. Private giving to UGA has totaled over $100 million in each of the last seven fiscal years. The last comprehensive fundraising campaign for the University of Georgia, “Archway to Excellence,” had a goal of $500 million and raised $653,674,368 in gifts and commitments.
Physical Facilities:The University occupies and maintains over 20 million square feet of space. The main campus includes 454 buildings for a total of 15,830,981 square feet. Eight major building projects were completed during 2011 for a total cost of over $61 million. The University’s fall 2011 land holdings totaled 40,007 acres in 31 Georgia counties.
Outreach: UGA Public Service and Outreach enhances quality of life in Georgia by applying the knowledge of the University to the state's evolving economic, social, and community needs. It serves as the ambassador to every corner of the state, translating the land-grant mission into programs and initiatives aimed at improving communities and the daily lives of Georgians.
