PRESS RELEASE 24 February 2012

LE GRAND BAL of the HOFBURG Vienna
New Year’s Eve highlight debuts in 2012
On 31 December 2012 LE GRAND BAL will celebrate a glittering premiere at the HOFBURG Vienna, where differently themed rooms will leave ballgoers wide-eyed with wonder. The ball will get the New Year off to an elegant and stylish start with lavish decorations, and musical highlights courtesy of waltz, jazz and swing ensembles. Even now, with New Year’s Eve still such a long way away, demand for tickets is riding high. And places in the Festsaal are already in short supply! Let’s waltz – or “Alles Walzer” as we say in Vienna!
On 31 December 2012 the HOFBURG Vienna will get the Viennese ball season off to a spectacular start with the first ever edition of LE GRAND BAL. The Hofburg has a long tradition of hosting New Year’s galas. After more than 40 years it’s finally time to say goodbye to the Kaiserball. The inaugural LE GRAND BAL will open a new chapter in Viennese ball history with a night to remember. “The central tenet of the new concept is to stage an unforgettable ball night of the highest possible quality for local and international visitors,” explains HOFBURG Vienna Managing Director Renate Danler. In addition to the much-loved traditional ball ceremonial, LE GRAND BAL will offer a dizzying array of New Year’s attractions for all the senses.

Acclaimed stage producer and costume designer Christof Cremer is in charge of production and design elements this year: his costumes were recently seen by television audiences all over the world during the live broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert. A combination of his shimmering, brightly coloured creations and special lighting will create a fairytale atmosphere in the HOFBURG Vienna state rooms.

The organisers can already reveal various details of the night’s entertainment even at this early stage. The first highlight comes in the shape of a formal opening ceremony, featuring a dance performance by the international debutantes committee and members of the Vienna State Ballet accompanied by the Vienna Opera Ball Orchestra. The “Je veux vivre” aria from Charles Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” will spirit ballgoers off to a musical dreamland. At midnight the “Pummerin” (boomer), the largest bell at St. Stephen’s cathedral, will ring in the new year before guests dance their way into 2013 to the sounds of the Blue Danube Waltz. A number of leading soloists from the Vienna State Opera and the Volksoper will sing various love, joy and happiness themed arias as part of the night’s ongoing “La nuit de l’amour” programme. The whole evening will play out to a backdrop of toe-tapping rhythms with everything from classic Viennese waltzes to big band melodies, and performances by string orchestras and jazz ensembles. The ever popular public quadrille and disco tunes round out a packed music and dance line-up for the night.

But what would New Year’s Eve be without the customary culinary delights? All three of the HOFBURG Vienna’s new catering partners will be showcasing their talents on 31 December 2012. GERSTNER Catering, the imperial caterer since 1847, will serve an exquisite gala dinner. The LE GRAND BAL dinner menu is an experience to be savoured with all the senses. Highlights include classic pan-fried scallops, venison Wellington and chocolate croquant mille-feuilles. GERSTNER is also offering an exclusive buffet option for ballgoers without dinner tickets. DO & CO, partner in excellence, will operate a traditional Demel café, while COPALOCA, the creative catering company, will serve trendy cocktails in the chill out lounge.

Numerous leading figures from the worlds of business, politics, science and culture have been appointed to the star-studded honorary and executive committees. The event will play out under the patronage of the Austrian President, Heinz Fischer. Members of the Austrian government, diplomatic corps, university boards and the international organisations based at the Hofburg are all gearing up for the LE GRAND BAL premiere at the HOFBURG Vienna.
