Atlanta native Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 novel, Gone With the Wind, occupies an important place in American literature. After breaking publishing records with one million copies sold within six months, the novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, has been translated into over forty languages, and seventy-five years later remains one of the best-selling novels of all time.
Throughout 2011, the Atlanta History Center's Margaret Mitchell House, located in Midtown Atlanta, celebrates the 75th anniversary of the publication of Mitchell’s acclaimed novel with a series of exclusive public programs for Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind 75th Anniversary Celebration. The Margaret Mitchell House, birthplace of Gone With the Wind, is a designated city landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a popular tourist destination, and home to the award-winning Literary Center at the Margaret Mitchell House. Designed to honor and preserve the legacy of Margaret Mitchell, the Literary Center hosts programs with award-winning authors as well as annual creative adult and youth writing classes. This two-part workshop continues the legacy of Margaret Mitchell by examining distinctive elements of Southern story writing that further the development of our potential local authors.

Experience 150 years of history with this special program by delving into the entire Gone With the Wind story and travel through time, including Civil War soldiers in the heart of Atlanta, the city in the 1920s when Margaret Mitchell wrote the book, and the lasting legacy of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

docents share stories about Mitchell, including her inspiration for the book, why she began writing, how her life came to a tragic end, and her legacy. In addition, visitors explore two Mitchell-related exhibitions, Margaret Mitchell: A Passion for Character and The Making of a Film Legend: Gone With the Wind. A stop at the museum shop is essential for purchasing unique memorabilia and Gone With the Wind collectibles. Margaret Mitchell House Celebratory Collaborations:

In conjunction with Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind 75th Anniversary Celebration, the Atlanta History Center and Margaret Mitchell House collaborate with several Atlanta attractions, festivals, and media partners to provide fans of Gone With the Wind special celebratory activities around the city.

In April, commemorating the 75th anniversaries of both Gone With the Wind and the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, the Atlanta History Center and Margaret Mitchell House unite with the festival as a Cultural Alliance Partner. Held at Piedmont Park, the festival runs Friday, April 15, through Sunday, April 17, 2011. Stop by the Atlanta History Center and Margaret Mitchell House booth for a variety of engaging history and literary activities, such as historical Travel Trunk displays, photo opportunities, a never-ending story game, enriching demonstrations, Poetry Out Loud performances, and craft-making activities for all ages. Before or after your festival visit, stop at Margaret Mitchell House and receive free museum admission on April 16 and 17, 2011. In June, commemorating both the 75th anniversary of Gone With the Wind and fifty years of great programming, Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) explores the life and work of the captivating and complex Margaret Mitchell with the debut of the documentary, Margaret Mitchell: American Rebel. The staff of the Atlanta History Center, Margaret Mitchell House, and Kenan Research Center contributed to the production of this program with photography, historical content, and locale.  Emmy Award-winning executive producer Pamela Roberts also collaborated with other important Mitchell-related attractions and individuals around the state of Georgia for this production. 
The contributing organizations are coming together not only to promote the GPB documentary premiering on June 30, 2011, but to create Atlanta's official schedule of commemorative 75th-anniversary activities.  Beginning Thursday, June 9, through Sunday, June 12, 2011, partner organizations, such as Margaret Mitchell House, the Georgian Terrace Hotel, the Road to Tara Museum, the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System, the Marietta Gone With the Wind Museum: Scarlett on the Square, Historic Oakland Cemetery, Morehouse College, the University of Georgia and the Georgia Center for the Book will offer special activities.  During this time frame at Margaret Mitchell House, visitors receive two-for-one admission to tour the museum and explore Mitchell's apartment where she wrote her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.  Learn more about the documentary and partnership offerings at MargaretMitchellHouse.com/GWTW75.
