Workshop Descriptions – Session II (Choose One)

Workshop 1: I AM NOT MY HAIR: STEREOTYPES OF BEAUTY

Description:  Beyoncé, Rihanna, Meagan Goode, and Lauren London top the list of American beauties in today’s pop culture. Their hair and fashion images influence teens worldwide. With these star studded celebrities setting the beauty standard, it can be challenging to develop and appreciate your own personal style. This exciting workshop will give you confidence to create your unique brand and stand out in style and inner substance.
Workshop 2: HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS: FAMILY, FRIENDS, DATING

Description:  It’s all about relationships! Making friends, keeping friends, healthy dating, nurturing family relationships and creating the networks to help you reach your goals, are all skills you will need for success in this fast paced world. Come to this empowering workshop and leave with tips to help you improve your interpersonal communication in ways that will take you all the way to the top!
Workshop 3: GENDER BASED BEHAVIORS (Different sessions for boys and girls)

Description: What’s cool for a guy to say and do, may not be as cool for a girl. In this workshop, you will explore the behaviors that are appropriate in most settings based on your gender. This workshop will show you the ropes. Separate sessions for the guys and girls will allow you to “keep it real” as you break it down.
Workshop 4: SPOKEN WORD: HOW TO DEVELOP SPOKEN WORD AS A MEANS OF SOCIAL COMMENTARY

Description:  Are you feeling “some type of way”? Need to find the best way to say what’s own your mind? What is Spoken Word? This workshop will show you how to use it as a tool to get your point across and communicate your feelings.
Workshop 5: TEENS COPING WITH STRESS, HOW TO AVOID DRUGS, ALCOHOL,, SEX AND PEER PRESSURE (Session specifically for Juniors and Seniors)

Description:  How do you as a teen manage making good grades, studying for the ACT, preparing for college, participating in extracurricular activities, maintaining positive relationships and dating, without crushing under the pressure to make negative choices that could hurt your future? This workshop will present effective strategies for managing stress and setting the right priorities.
Workshop 6: STUDENT ATHLETES: MANAGEMENT OF TIME AND MANAGEMENT OF STRESS

Description:  It looks so easy and perfect from the outside. But only student athletes see the true side of trying to “keep it all together”. A professional athlete will lead this workshop and discuss the demands of being a great athlete while trying to manage the stress of school and a social life, as well as the real consequences for making negative choices as an athlete.

Workshop 7: SOCIAL MEDIA: PORTRAYING WHAT YOU ARE NOT

Description:  CATFISH!! REALLY???? How does your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Vine profiles portray you? Are you the person that your profiles say you are? In this creative workshop you will learn how to represent your true image using Social Media in ways that will work to your advantage versus your detriment.
Workshop 8: DATING ETIQUETTE (Session specifically for Juniors and Seniors)

Description:  Rap music videos suggest some interesting ways for guys and girls to interact in today’s dating scene. Should the girl pursue the guy? Should the guy expect a kiss or more or anything at all on the first date? In this dynamic, “no holds barred” workshop you can share your best practices, learn new ones, ask questions and learn tips for dating in the real world! There will be separate sessions for freshmen and sophomores, and juniors and seniors. We will break this session between the 9th and 10th graders and the 11th and 12th graders to talk about age appropriate question about dating.
Workshop 9: CPR READINESS

Description:  When you least expect it, you may have to try to save a life! Will you know how? After completing the first ever, CPR Readiness mini-course during the teen conference, you will be prepared and ready to assist a person who may be in a medical crisis. You will learn the fundamentals of emergency response such as recognizing distress signals, as well as the specific techniques to use to administer CPR to preserve life, if a person has stopped breathing, perform the Heimlich Maneuver, if a person is choking, and more. This mini-course will be offered to all teens to make sure you know what to do in the case of an emergency.

2014 TEEN COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

The 58th Southeastern Teen Conference Community Service project will support Nashville’s Love’s Healthy Start Fest, a back-to-school community event sponsored by Tennessee State Representative Harold Love, Jr., Tennessee State University, and the Urban League of Nashville. Children in the community surrounding TSU will receive backpacks filled with school supplies donated by the Teens of the Southeastern Region of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.


During the time allotted for community service, teens will sort, fill and prepare the backpacks for distribution. Each chapter is requested to send donations of school supplies to Nashville prior to the start of the conference. Lead Teen Sponsors will receive a list of requested supplies and shipping information.

Senior Graduates will not participate in the 2014 Teen Conference Service Project. The Senior Outing occurs during this time.
