HELSABECK

Fred

Dr. Fred Helsabeck's 17-year tenure as president of Culver-Stockton College has been described by the institution as one that brought the college "from despair to dignity, from crisis to credibility."
"When he arrived in 1956, there was a real question as to whether or not the school would survive," said his son, Robert Helsabeck of Absecon, N.J. "He infused the place with a sense of hope for the future."
Dr. Helsabeck, who retired to Urbanna and relocated to Richmond in 1989, died Thursday at the Masonic Home of Virginia. He was 94. He landed at the small Canton, Mo., college from Lynchburg, where he was a former vice mayor and served Lynchburg College first as dean, then as assistant to the president.
Under Dr. Helsabeck's leadership, Culver-Stockton's once-sagging enrollment more than doubled. Its assets grew three-fold and a number of new building projects, including three residence halls and expansions of the campus library and fine-arts complex, were completed.
"Dr. Helsabeck embodied the leadership and moral conviction crucial to the success of a liberal arts college such as Culver-Stockton," said William L. Fox, president of the college. "His work will be long remembered."
The college established the Helsabeck Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 1980.
After retiring to Urbanna in 1973, he taught civics and history classes at Rappahannock Community College, served several terms on the Town Council and volunteered in the local elementary schools as a reading tutor.
Throughout his life, he served as a supply pastor for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and in both Virginia and Missouri he was a past president of the church's respective state conventions.
"His religion was always important to him, but his principal calling was education," his son said.
Reared in King and Queen County, he graduated from Lynchburg College in 1929. He held a master's degree from George Peabody Teacher's College and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
Before his career in higher education, Dr. Helsabeck spent 15 years as a teacher, coach and principal at schools in Nansemond and Gloucester counties, West Point, Hopewell, Radford and Roanoke. He was a former curriculum counselor for the Virginia Department of Education, working in Southwest Virginia.
In addition to his son Robert, survivors include his wife, Emily Ailsworth Helsabeck; a daughter, Jane H. Marton of Cumming, Ga.; two other sons, Fred Helsabeck Jr. of Canton, Mo., and Henry C. Helsabeck of Newberg, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Smyrna Christian Church near Miller's Tavern. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
