GRANTHAM, Helen Hurst, 82, of Pulaski, Virginia, went peacefully to be with
her Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 21, 2002 at the Pulaski Community
Hospital. She was born on June 11, 1920 in McDowell County, West Virginia
and was the daughter of the late Arthur and Trussie Carnell Hurst. She was
also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Burman N. Grantham on
July 12, 1997 and her beloved grandson, David A. Alley on August 24, 2002.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Pulaski for 49 years. She was
past President of the Pulaski Woman's Club, Good Neighborhood Club, Home
Demonstration Club, Salvation Army Auxiliary and the Pulaski Garden Club.
She was also a member of the American Legion Post #7, Independent Order of
Odd Fellows Rebekah Lodge #100, Blacksburg. She retired from Virginia Maid
Hosiery Mills after working for 33 years. Surviving are one daughter and
son-in-law, Jolene and Everett (Sonny) Alley, Salem; two sons, Gale Grantham
and wife Linda, Pulaski, Doug Grantham, Pulaski; two granddaughters, Sabrina
A. Conner and husband Tony, Dublin, Angie G. Phillips and husband Rodney,
Dublin; two grandsons, Todd Grantham and wife Paige, Houston, Texas, Tony
Grantham, Baton Rouge, La.; six great-grandchildren, Lucas and Jennifer
Conner, Dublin, Joshua and Ashley Burleson and Andrew Phillips, Dublin,
Corbin Grantham, Houston, Texas; two sisters, Edith H. Eaton and husband
Darnell, Pulaski, and Emma H. Gravely, Concord, N.C. Funeral service will be
held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Dr. Don R. Pegram
and Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland
Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be Tuesday afternoon from the funeral
home where the family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the service
hour. The family will be meeting at the home of Gale and Linda Grantham,
2012 Twin Oaks, Pulaski, after the service. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral
Home, Pulaski.

WILLIAM "ESTEL" GRAVELY, age 79 of Dahlonega, Georgia, formerly of Wythe County died Thursday, August 31, 2000, at his residence. He was born in Wythe County the son of the late James and Elizabeth Jones Gravely. He was a former pastor in Wythe County and was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Mintora "Dollie" Gravely. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by five daughters and sons-in-lae: Myrtle and Alfred Hughett of Pulaski, VA; Ruby Marshall; Tinnie and Mike Marshall, all of Dahlonega; Jane and Ronnie Cofer of Georgetown, TN; Mary and Berlin Cook of Austinville, VA. Four sons and daughters-in-law: Joe and Glenna Gravely; Doug Gravely all of Max Meadows, VA; Allen Gravely of RAdford; David and Marsha Gravely of Max Meadows, VA; a sister, Margie Marie Gravely of Wytheville, VA; and a brother, Edward Lee Gravely of Max Meadows, VA. 35 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, September 3, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gravely Memorial Church with the Rev. David Farmer and the Rev. Aileen Aker officiating. Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #9. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday,

GRAVLEY, Lewis Fielding, 92, of Dublin, died Tuesday evening, March 6, 2001
in the Sunbridge Nursing Home, Dublin. He was born in Wythe County on May
31, 1908 and was the son of the late Charlie Gravley and Alberta Dalton
Gravley. He was also preceded in death by his wives, Laura Alley Gravley and
Ruth Farmer Gravley; one sister; and six brothers. Surviving are a son and
daughter-in-law, Rodney and Annie Gravley of Pulaski; sisters, Dora Akers of
Pulaski, Dorothy Wall of Pulaski, Shirley Arnold of Wytheville, Jennie
Stillwell of Draper, Ruby Summers of Draper; brothers, Raymond Gravley of
West Virginia, Hugh Gravley of North Carolina; grandsons, Rodney A. Gravley,
II of Pulaski, Timothy Dale Gravley of Pulaski, Tony Randall Gravley of
Dublin, Bobby Lee Gravley of Pulaski; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral
service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with the
Rev. Chester Linkous officiating. Burial will follow in the Thornspring
Cemetery, Pulaski County. Visiting will be Thursday evening from the funeral
home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of
flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the Carillion New River
Valley Hospice, 707 Radford Street, Radford, Va. 24141. The family will be
meeting at the residence of the son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Annie
Gravley, 3687 2nd Moorehead Lane, Pulaski. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral

Samuel John “Johnny” Gravley, age 56, of Max Meadows, Va. the Sanders Mines Community, Passed away Thursday, July 17, 2003 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County June 2, 1947, son of the late John E. and Mittie Cregger Gravley. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, a United States Army veteran of Vietnam and was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil “Sonny” Gravley. Surviving are: his wife, Sharon Gravley of the home; twin daughters, Sandy Fisher, Candy Ingo, Max Meadows; six grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred Dunford, Max Meadows, Jo Ann Gravley, Bassett, Til Alderman, Barren Springs; brothers, James L. Gravley, Wytheville, George C. Gravley, Tommy M. Gravley, both of Max Meadows. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 20 at 2 p.m. in the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday or at the Residence at any time. GRAY, Thelma Burton, 80, of Dublin, died Saturday, May 6, 2000. She was born
in Giles County on May 19, 1919, and was the daughter of the late, Leland
Oscar and Emma Frances Lambert Burton. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Gray; two brothers, Edgar
Burton and Oscar Lee Burton; two sisters, Louise and Virginia. She was a
retired employee of the Radford A.A.R.P. Plant after working there for
years. She is survived by two sons, James E. Gray, Jr., Pembroke, and Oscar
D. Gray, Christiansburg; two daughters, Vivian L. Richardson, Dublin, and
Toby A. Gross, Franklin; two brothers, Hampton Burton, Winchester, and Earl
F. Burton, Broad Run; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two
great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 9,
2000, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with
Rev. David Woodyard and Rev. Barbara Wilson officiating. Burial will follow
in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Riffe's in
Narrows, Monday, from 6 to 9 p.m.

GRAY, Juanita Sue, 59, of Christiansburg, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2003. She was a long standing member of the Fraternal Order of Akron Eagles Lodge #2238 and a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary #1184 of Pulaski, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Thelma Brown, Mary Roarke, Betty Brown, Ruby Gupton, Charles Brown and Clyde Brown. Survivors include her husband, William Douglas Gray, Christiansburg; three children and their spouses, Diana and John Cottrell of Akron, Ohio, Douglas Edward and Micheal Welch Gray of Radford, Va., David and Susan Gray of Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren, John Wesley Cottrell, Jr., William Jeffrey Cottrell, Heather Nichole Gray, Preston Lee Gray; one sister, Emma Earls of Akron, Ohio; one brother, Edward Eugene Brown of Richlands, Va.; loving companions, Snickers and Samson; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 8, at the Horne Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles Lutz officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. GRAY, Julius Peyton, 89, of Dublin, died Thursday June 19, 2003, at his residence. Born September 12, 1913, in Pulaski to the late Willie Woodyard Gray and Grayson Whitfield Gray. Mr. Gray was a retired electrician for Kaiser Aluminum in Ravenswood, W.Va., and was a member of the First Christian Church in Pulaski. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Estelle Mabe Gray. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Donald "Nancy" Dalton of Dublin, and Mrs. Richard "Bonnie" Lund of Elkton, Md. Also survived by four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday June 22, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. Visiting will be anytime Sunday after 10 a.m. at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time. Dr. Payton GREEN, one of the best known physicians of Wytheville, died suddenly on Saturday night from apoplexy, having been taken ill just a short time before his death. The funeral service was held Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock, the Reverend F. H. Craighill officiating.
Dr. GREEN was born in Roanoke County, but had resided in Wytheville for many years, practicing most successfully his profession. Being immensely popular. His wife died about four years ago. One daughter, Mrs. Frank REED, of Ithaca, NY, and one sister, Mrs. F. H. TERRY, survive. He was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal church.
The deceased was a member of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge, the Wythe Royal Arch Chapter, and Pulaski Lodge No. 1067, B. P. O. Ellos.

GRESS, Paul Timothy, 85, of Pulaski, died Thursday June 19, 2003, at Pulaski Community Hospital. Born September 15, 1917 in York, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Lucy Anna Eppley Gress and William Edward Gress. Mr. Gress was a veteran of W.W. II having served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Baltimore during the Pacific Campaign. He was a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company with over 38 years of service, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski, a member of the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #239 A.F.& A.M. where he served as Master, and was a High Priest in the Royal Arch Masons. He was a current member of the advisory board of the Agency on Aging for the past 15 years. Paul was active in many organizations, but when all was quiet, he spent much time with his love for sports. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Gress Martin, and three brothers, Earl, Stewart and William. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Butt Gress of Pulaski; a son, Eric Timothy "Tim" Gress and his wife Tamara of Dublin; one grandson, Eric Paul Gress; a nephew, Donald "Sonny" Gress and his wife Frances of Salem; a niece, Phyllis Gress of King William, Va.; special friends, Ralph Bralley of Charlottesville, Va., Steve Bralley of Greenville, S.C., Frances Aker of Rising Sun, Md., and Marian Bralley Cooke of Simpsonville, S.C. Also survived by several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Randall Frye officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #239 A.F.&A.M. will conduct graveside rites. Visiting will be anytime Saturday after 10 a.m. at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until funeral time. MILLEDGEVILLE - Services for Hubert F. Groseclose Jr. will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church in Milledgeville with burial at 2 p.m. Sunday in Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski, Va. He was born in Pulaski, son of the late Hubert F. Groseclose Sr. and Mary Shuff. He graduated from the University of Virginia, was a World War II veteran and was retired from Allied Chemical Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen M. Steger Groseclose; children Hubert F. Groseclose III of Douglasville and David Groseclose of Milledgeville; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 300 W. Hancock St., Milledgeville 31061. Moores Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

GUNN, William T., (Peter), 73, of Nashville, Tenn., formerly a native of Pulaski County, Va., passed away July 5, 2003 at home. William retired from Metro Government in Nashville, Tenn. and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He is the son of the late Samuel C. and Lorena B. Gleason Gunn. He is predeceased by his brother, Julian C. Gunn and sister, Dora Lee Gunn Verryhill. William is survived by his sister, Joyce Gunn Berry of Melbourne, Fla.; brother, Jimmy W. Gunn of Newport News, Va.; and many friends. Friends are welcome to call Saturday, July 12, 2003 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lotz Salem Chapel, where a service celebrating William's life will be held in the chapel at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. GUYNN, William Earl, 86, of Rich Creek, died Wednesday morning, June 27,
2001, in the Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg. He was born in
Summers County, W.Va. on March 25, 1915, and was the son of the late William
Joseph and Anna Ethel Harvey Guynn. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Caldwell Guynn; and a daughter, Susie
Guynn Blankenship; four brothers, Bobby, Paul, Carl, Dave Guynn; two
sisters, Blanch Guynn and Ruby Miller. He was a graduate of Narrows High
School, and was a former employee of the Virginian Power Plant at Narrows
and had served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Giles County Sheriff's
Department. He was a former town manager for the Town of Rich Creek and was
a member of the First United Methodist Church, Rich Creek. Mr. Guynn had
volunteered as a chaperone for many 7TH grade Richmond trips at the Narrows
Elementary / Middle School and was called "Uncle Earl" by many. He was a
member of and past patron of Lakeland Chapter #74 O.E.S. of Narrows, and was
a 63-year member of Intermont Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M. having previously
received his 50-year pin. At the time of his death, he was an active member
of the Rich Creek Lions Club, for 27 years, having been named a Melvin Jones
Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Service. He was a veteran of World War II
