HOWARD, Fannie Martin, 86, of Blacksburg, went to be with the Lord on
Thursday, October 1, 1998 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born in
Floyd County on April 17, 1912 to the late James Wilton and Maude Bryant
Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Howard;
and a son, Melvin Edgar Howard. She was a long-time member of the Allegeny
Baptist Church. She is survived by seven daughters and sons-in-law, June
Bandy of Chesapeake, Mildred and Clarence Adkins of Salem, Frances Eskridge
of Columbia, S.C., Nancy and Dan Winters of Christiansburg, Evelyn S.
Morris of Danville, Mary and Victor Adkins of Christiansburg, Hazel Lee and
David Johnson of Christiansburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin E.
and Beanie Howard of Christiansburg, and Frank A. and Peggy Howard of
Check; 29 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 11
great-great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Ocie and Lyde
McMinnis of Great Falls, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral
services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, October 4, 1998 in the McCoy
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Dale Snider officiating. Interment
will follow in the Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. Friends may call at the
funeral home anytime after 1 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 1998, and the family
will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at McCoy Funeral Home.

HOWELL, Dorothy Patterson, 90, of Radford, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2002 in Carilion New River Medical Center. Surviving are two sons, Donald Howell, Lynchburg and Gary Howell, Vinton; two grandsons, Donald and Derek Howell, Houston Texas, all who loved her dearly and will miss her deeply. She is also survived by her many friends whose lives have been touched by her grace and sincere interest in their well being. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2002 at the Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Curt McKee officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2002 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford.

HRONES, Etta Virginia, 87, of Christiansburg, went to her heavenly home on March 22, 2003 at her home. She was a member of the Belspring Presbyterian Church and retired from the Radford City Library. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Elvin and Lula M. Whitt of Christiansburg, William Nicholas Hrones of Pulaski and Theodore James Hrones of Christiansburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Victoria Roop of Covington, Sophia Hrones and Gary D. Leedy of Pulaski; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate Etta's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2003 at Belspring Presbyterian Church with Rev. Amy Lehr and Rev. Joe McCoy officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Belspring Presbyterian Church or the Christiansburg Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends after the service at Etta's home at 1360 Rock Road. Arrangements by Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.

HUDSON, Virginia Lyons, 77, of Dublin, died Wednesday May 21, 2003 at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. Born November 16, 1925 in Pulaski, she was the daughter of the late Florence Farmer Lyons and Edmond P. Lyons. She was a retired employee of Virginia Maid Hosiery Mill in Pulaski and later worked in the kitchen at the Highland Manor Nursing Home in Dublin. She was an active member of the Newbern United Methodist Church where she was also a member of the United Methodist Women. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Franklin Hudson, four brothers; Sherman C. Lyons, Archie P. Lyons, Oakley Lyons, and Everett Lyons; two sisters; Elsie Lyons VanHoy, and Lucille Lyons Tabor. She is survived by one son; Benny Wayne Hudson and his wife Karen of Dublin: four daughters, Mrs. Johnny "Sandy" Ratcliffe, Mrs. Mary Hudson Cox, Mrs. Ray "Erma" Sheppard, and Mrs. Joyce Hudson Quesenberry, all of Dublin. Also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. William Perkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Newbern Cemetery. Visiting will be anytime Thursday after 2 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Newbern United Methodist Church. HUFF, Walter Blain, Jr., 80, of 220 Cliff Street, Pulaski, died Saturday
night February 17, 2001 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in
Pulaski on January 25, 1921 and was the son of the late Walter B. Huff and
Lillian Whitt Huff. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Frances
Eugene (Gene) Huff. He was a retired employee of Virginia Maid Hosiery Mill
with 47 years of service. Surviving are wife of 46 years, Dollie Mae Huff,
Pulaski; sons and daughters-in-law, Walter B. Huff, III, Huntsville, Ala.,
Anthony Kirk and Charlotte R. Huff, Pulaski, Gordon Todd and Alice Marie
Huff, Pulaski; sister, Lucy Huff, Pulaski; sister-in-law, Naomi Stewart
Huff, Palmyra; grandchildren, Ambria N. Huff, Brandon K. Huff, Elaine M.
Huff, McKayla L. Huff. Mr. Huff will be cremated. A memorial service will be
held Tuesday at 8 p.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel. The family will
receive friends from the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. until the
service hour. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made
to the American Cancer Society or the Pulaski County Humane Society.

HUFF, Gaynell Quesenberry, 87, of Christiansburg, formerly of Indian Valley, died Sunday, July 13, 2003 at New River Valley Medical Center. She was preceded in death by parents, Edgar L. and Sarah Gardner Quesenberry; husband, Curby Lee Huff; son, Paul Huff; brothers, Guy Quesenberry, Willis Quesenberry and Blaine Quesenberry. She was a charter member of Indian Valley Church of God. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Jordon and Beatrice Huff of Hillsville, Joyce and Jean Huff of Indian Valley, James and Pat Huff of Christiansburg, Silas and Diane Huff of Floyd; four daughters and sons-in-law, Janie and Gerald Stevers of Pembroke, Shirley and Wendell Sutphin of Willis, Carolyn and Bob Rue of Christiansburg, May and Sal Choudhury of Blacksburg; two brothers, Ray Quesenberry of Frederick, Md., Seldon Quesenberry of Willis; one sister, Dovie Verkler of Los Angeles, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Indian Valley Church of God with Rev. Kenneth Poston, Rev. James Walker and Rev. Jerry Shepherd officiating. Burial will be in Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Indian Valley Church of God. HUFF, Pearlie M. Linkous, 101, of Blacksburg, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 29, 2001 at her home with her family by her side. She was the daughter of the late Scott and Nellie Linkous. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie D. Huff, Sr., two sons, Carlyn D. Huff and Charles D. Huff, Jr., and one daughter, Pauline Mullens. This precious mother is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Roy and Agnes Huff of Barboursville, Va., Albert and Mary Huff of Christiansburg, Samuel and Martha Huff, Billy and Darlene Huff and Boyd and Connie Huff, all of Blacksburg, Va.; five daughters and son-in-law, Clara Sheppard, Charlene Keen and Treva Huff of Blacksburg, Va., Maudie Ramsey of Christiansburg, Va., and Laura and Charlie Williams of Richmond, Va. She is also survived by one daughter-in-law, Sadie Huff of Blacksburg, Va.; 27 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren. She was a charter member of Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, organist and Secretary / Treasurer and was a faithful supporter until her death. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 30, 2001 from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Reverend Jerry Sloss and Reverend Eddie Wood officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers are appreciated but donations are welcomed to Hospice Services and the Blacksburg Rescue Squad. Arrangements are being handled by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg.

Ruth Lyons Hughes, 75, beloved mother, aunt, grandmother and friend, died peacefully on April 28, 2003 with her family by her side. Ruth was born on Jan. 5, 1928 in Wytheville, Va. to the late George William Lyons and Virginia Stephens Landreth. Ruth married Dale W. Hughes, Sr. on Sept. 13, 1946 in Pulaski, Va. Ruth was a gracious southern lady who opened her heart and her home to not only her extended family but also to “adopted” family members both human and animal. She was a full time mother and housewife who dedicated her life to taking care of her family and ensuring their well-being and happiness. Ruth is survived by her four children Kim (Gary) Cullop, Nicki (Chris) Alvarez, Dale (Marilynn) Hughes and Christy (David) Lewis; her nephew Phil Hughes; and her special angel baby, granddaughter Crystal Ortega-Terrill. Her brother-in-law, Swanie; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends also survive Ruth. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Dale and her parents. A celebration of life in honor of Ruth was held at the family home at 3631 South 5750 West, West Valley City, on Friday, May 2, 2003 from 5-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association in Ruth’s name. We thank all of our friends, especially Helga Lail-Weiss, Angie Hill, Ken Hill and Dr. Alison Schlisman at the Senior Health Center of St. Mark’s Hospital, for their help and support during this very difficult time. Funeral service for Chess Monroe HUMPHREY, 86, Max Meadows, who died Monday will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Galena Church with the Rev. Richard Shelor and the Rev. Lewis Kegley officiating. Burial will be in the HUMPHREY family cemetery.

HUNTER, Rev. Bobby G., 55, our dear beloved husband and father was called by
our Savior to his eternal heavenly home on Friday, March 9, 2001. He was
born October 29, 1944, in Pulaski, Va. He was the son of the late Julia
Hunter. Reverend Bobby G. Hunter was Associate Pastor of Abundant Life
Ministries. He was also the former Pastor of Prayer Praise Worship Center
and River Hill Baptist Church, Galax, Va. Reverend Hunter was also a
Chaplain at Pulaski Community Hospital and long time employee of Volvo
White. Additionally, he was the Religious Committee Chairperson of the
Pulaski County Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. and a long time member of First
Baptist Church, Pulaski. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Iva P.
Hunter of Pulaski; three sons, Bobby (Bridgett) G. Hunter, Jr., Louie
(Sonja) Hunter and Julian Hunter, all of Pulaski, Va.; two daughters,
Yolanda (Sissy) Hunter and Veronica (Lady) Hunter, both of Pulaski; four
brothers, James (Valerie) Hunter and Edward (Betty) Hunter of Roanoke, David
(Robin) Hunter of Pulaski, Frank (Jeanette) Johnson of Hampton; one sister,
Connie (David) Patterson of Dublin; and a very special cousin / sister,
Shirley Akers of Pulaski; six grandchildren, Dorion Tyler, Bre Jame (LJ)
Xavier and Brent; very special friend, father in the ministry, Reverend C.G.
(Doris) Slaughter; special friends, Pastor Randall (Bonna) Lawrence and
Pastor Doug (Debra) Patterson and a host of other nieces, nephews, other
relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Church
of God on Bob White Boulevard, Pulaski, Va. with the Rev. C.G. Slaughter
officiating. Burial will be at Pinehurst Cemetery. Family will receive
friends on Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Magazine

HURD, Harry Thomas, "Tom," 62, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, January 28, 2001 at Roanoke Memorial Rehab Center. He was born in Roanoke on May 26, 1938 to the late Harry Thorton and Beulah Price Hurd. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Ralph "Rusty" Hale Dowdy, Jr. and a brother-in-law, Ralph Hale Dowdy. He was a graduate of VPI and SU where he received a B.S. degree and earned his Masters degree from Radford University. Tom was employed at Corning Glass Works for 12 years and was currently the Director of Sponsored Programs at VPI and SU. He was a lifetime member of the Blacksburg Fire Department and First Aid Crew. He is survived by his wife, Jane D. Hurd of Blacksburg; nephews, Joseph "Joe" N. Dowdy of Newport, Matthew Dowdy of Christiansburg; a brother, Samuel Payton Hurd and wife, Norma B. Hurd of Topeka, Kan.; niece, Tamara L. Hurd of Topeka, Kan.; nephew, Michael B. Hurd and wife, Konnie Hurd of Leawood, Kan.; great-niece, Shelby Morgan Hurd of Leawood, Kan.; great-nephews, Andrew Logan Hurd and Spencer Payton Hurd of Leawood, Kan.; mother-in-law, Pauline K. Friends may call at the funeral home anytime after 12 noon on Wednesday and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

Mrs. Sallie N. Hurley, 86 years of age, died June 25 in a Radford hospital. The Hurleys were at one time residents of Tazewell. There survives four daughters; Mrs. W. W. Levi, Mrs. W. A. Vest Jr. Miss Blanche Hurley, all of Radford; Mrs. Peters, of Richland; two sons, D. P. Hurley of Rockville, Md., W.N. Hurley, of Gaithersburg, Md.; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sat. at the Central Methodist Church at Radford.

Gilmer T. Hurst, Sr., 88, was called by our Savior to his eternal heavenly home on Thursday, June 12, 2003. "Poppy” was born on March 4, 1915 in Newbern. He was the son of the late Romer M. Hurst and Elizabeth Tolley Hurst. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Artie Coble Hurst; and two granddaughters, Kimberly Gail Hurst and Gina Marie Hurst; one sister, Lois Hurst; and two brothers, Elmer Hurst and Eugene Hurst. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Tolley and Tammy Hurst of Dublin; one sister, Agnes Gregory, of Pulaski; three grandchildren, Phillip M. Hurst and Rebecca S. Hurst, both of Pulaski, and Mrs. David (Tina) Owens of Fayetteville, N.C.; two step-grandchildren, Casey N. Petty and Justin G. Petty, both of Dublin; two special sisters-in-law, Mrs. Henry (Oneeta) Coble of Max Creek and Mrs. Hass (Julia) Mabry of Draper; one brother-in-law, Homer Coble of Pulaski. He is also survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. Gilmer was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving his country in the Pacific Campaign. He was involved in many major battles throughout the war. “Poppy” was an inspiration to all who knew him. He shared a wealth of information and wisdom to many people, concerning the past history of Pulaski County and the world as it was during the depression and war time. His love for people, especially children, his witty sense of humor, and his appreciation of life endeared him to all. The funeral will be held Monday, June 16, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home with the Rev. Dallas Vines officiating. Internment will follow at the Pentecostal Virginia Conference Cemetery in Dublin. The family will receive friends anytime at the son's home, 208 3rd Street, Dublin and at the funeral home Monday from 1 until 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the New Life Harvest building fund, P.O. Box 907, Radford, Va. 24143. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.
