NANCE, Nora Havens, 72, of 713 Washington Square Apartments in Pulaski, was called home to be with her Lord from her earthly home on Wednesday, February 5, 2003, after a very courageous battle with cancer. Born September 1, 1930, in Bland, Va., she was a longtime resident of Pulaski County. She attended the Peak Creek Mission Church of Pulaski, was a lover of bluegrass music and had a deep interest in drawing and painting. She also enjoyed her hobby of collecting horses and Indians. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Sydney and Hattie Townley Havens; husband, Paul C. Nance; eldest son, Roger D. Nance, Sr.; and grandson, Roger D. Nance, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory, three children, Michael Nance and Sandra Nance of Pulaski, Joy and son-in-law, Ira Hutchins of Huntsville, Alabama; three sisters, Beatrice Millirons and Bernice Carey of Roanoke, Carylene Stafford of Staffordsville; two brothers, Wilmer Havens of Bland, Estel Havens of Pearisburg; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a very special friend of the family, Butch Miller. "Mommie loved her music and hobbies, but we will always remember her unconditional love that she had for her children, and our deep love for her. We will miss you, Mommie!" Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke with burial following in Sunrise Memory Gardens at Rich Creek. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Wayne Neal of Radford, one daughter, Lori James Brownell, Draper; step-mother, Hattie James, Dublin. Graveside services will be held Monday, May 19, at 11 a.m. at West View Cemetery in Radford with Rev. Dallas Vines and Rev. Wayne Poston officiating. James L. Nelson, 71, of Christiansburg died Monday, April 21, 2003. He was a retired engineer from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech where he played football in 1949 and 1950. He had retired from the U. S. Army Reserves having reached the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents James R. and Elizabeth C. Nelson and by his infant son, James T. Nelson. He is survived by his wife, Jean Nelson of Christiansburg; daughter, Valanda L. Nelson of Greenville, NC; son and daughter-in-law Edward L. Nelson and Toni L. Pimintel of Christiansburg; granddaughter, Madeline R. Nelson of Christiansburg; brother-in-law and wife, David W. & Betty C. Jones of Charlottesville; and nephew Stuart C. Jones of Richmond. A funeral was held Thursday, April 24, 2003 at Horne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Kanney officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. Memorials may be made to Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 176, Christiansburg, VA 24073. Horne Funeral & Cremation Service is handling arrangements.

NESHAT, Mrs. Patricia Mills, (Lyn), 48, passed away June 22, 2003 at her home in Seattle, Washington. She was born September 13, 1954, the beloved daughter of Mrs. Macie Semones Mills and the late Roy D. Mills of Parrott. Lyn graduated from Pulaski County High School in the Class of 1972. A memorial service was held June 30, 2003 at Butterworth Chapel in Seattle for her friends and neighbors. She is survived by a daughter, Mikhel Daria Neshat of Austin, Texas; her mother, Macie Mills of Parrott; two brothers, Michael Mills of Parrott and Jacoby Mills of Coeburn; six nephews and one niece. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Parrott Church of God with Rev. Eddie C. Dalton and Rev. Maude Cherry officiating. Interment will follow in the Sifford Cemetery with Danny Hinkley serving as pallbearer. Arrangements by Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.

NEWMAN, Canary Huff, 90, of Draper, died Tuesday morning, March 27, 2001 in
the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Carroll County on October
22, 1910 and was the daughter of the late Wyatt Blaine Huff and Myrtle Smith
Huff. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Marshall Newman;
a sister, Elva Huff Hurst; and two brothers, Carson T. Huff and Cannie Lee
Huff. She was a member of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church. She
graduated from Radford University and William & Mary. She had a long career
in education as a teacher and guidance counselor. Surviving are sister and
brother-in-law, Dovie Huff and Shirley E. Cox of Hiwassee; sister-in-law,
Tida M. Huff of Sylvatus; brother-in-law, A. Vernon Hurst of Draper; many
special nieces, nephews, great-nephews, great-nieces, great-great-nieces,
great-great-nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from
the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church with the Dr. Cortez Cooper and the
Rev. Preston O. Sartelle, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery. Visiting will be Wednesday evening from Stevens Funeral Home where
the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers the
family wishes that memorials be made to the Draper's Valley Presbyterian

Goldie Quesenberry Newman, age 91, of Williamsburg and formerly of Pierce Avenue, Pulaski passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the Williamsburg Center - Genesis Eldercare, Williamsburg. Born September 19, 1911 in Carroll County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Quesenberry and Samaria Branscome Quesenberry. She moved to Pulaski in 1933 after her marriage to Roby Newman. Her beloved husband of more than fifty years, Roby Seibert Newman and one brother, Lawson Quesenberry, also preceded in her death. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Jo Newman Kelley, Lanexa, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, William Eugene (Bill) Newman and Carol Newman, Spotsylvania, Va., Donald Wayne (Don) Newman, Pulaski, R. Dean Newman and Judy Newman, Harrisonburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Mark Newman, Melody Seay, Paige Newman, Bryan Newman and wife Jenny, Lance Kelley, Melissa Kelley; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Newman, Wilson Wayne Seay and Thomas Seay; two brothers, Lincoln Quesenberry and wife Vesta, Dugspur and Alvin Quesenberry and wife Nina Belle, Hillsville. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday 2 P.M. at Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Dublin with Rev. Judy Yonce officiating. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements for the family.

NICKOLS, James Daniel, (Dan), 62, of 422 Baughman Avenue, Marion, died Monday night, February 17, 2003, in the Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn. He was born in Wythe County on August 23, 1940, and he was the son of the late James Nickols and Beatrice Townsend Nickols. He was a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn A. Nickols of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Nicole Nickols of Mooresville, N.C.; granddaughter, Katelyn Nickols of Mooresville, N.C.; one brother, Johnny Nickols of Dublin. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 9 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gerald Meeks and Rev. Pat Gilbert officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from the funeral home from 7 p.m. until the service hour. A graveside service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. from Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Dublin. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

David G. (Noony) Noonkester, 68, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, after a long battle with lung cancer. Also preceded in death by his parents and other family members. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sandra Noonkester of Christiansburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Lester Bolt of Draper, Julie and Walter Bryant of Blacksburg; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Joan Noonkester of Christiansburg; sisters and brothers, Bertie and Wade Graham of Christiansburg; brothers and sisters-in-law, his twin brother, Dennis and Evelyn Noonkester, all of Blacksburg; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; faithful companion "Toby" and special friend, Roger Bean. A very special thank you to Sherry Reed and all the people at Carilion New River Valley Hospice and the nurses and the staff of the surgical care unit at New River Valley Medical Center and Dr. Rotche and his staff. God bless them all. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2003, at McCoy Funeral Home with the Revs. Randy Woolwine and Wayne Poston officiating. NUNLEY, LENA AGNES, 78, of Christiansburg, went to be with her Lord Sunday, December 23, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bentley M. Nunley and four brothers, Corby, William, Silas and Orby Nester and a sister, Nellie. She was retired from Radford University and attended Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Kelley V. Nunley and his wife, Grace, of Pulaski, Va., Jack D. Nunley and his wife, Diana, also of Pulaski; three grandchildren, Michael and wife, Danya, of Grover Beach, Calif., Robyn who attends Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., and Ryan who attends East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn.; three sisters, Susan Underwood of Fancy Gap, Lula Severson of Spingfield, Ore., and Veva Fain of Westfield, N.C.; a very special friend, Nina "Sis" Lowery of Christiansburg; and a host of other family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 26th in the Horne Funeral Chapel in Christiansburg, Va., with Pastor Mickey White officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 25th at the funeral home. NUNLEY, JOHNNIE EARLY, 72, of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 31, 2001. He was a retired employee of VDOT, having retired in 1989. Johnnie was a faithful member of Bain Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The son of the late Issac Hobert and Mary Costigan Nunley, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Rachel Nunley, Virginia Hamm, and Louise Lorton; a brother, Pat Nunley. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Audrey Bain Nunley; one son, Marvin L. Nunley and wife Betty; two daughters, Marlene Jackson, Drema P. Bishop, and husband, C.L., all of Christiansburg; a stepson, Clifford D. Bain and wife Barbara; stepdaughters, Teresa B. Hurt and husband Bobby, Shenna B. Thomas, Jennifer B. Crawford-Spangler and husband Scott, all of Radford; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, twelve stepgrandchildren, and four stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Bob Nunley and wife Josephine of Christiansburg, Joe Nunley and wife Janet of Tennessee; sisters, Betty Jane Sheppard and husband Earl of North Carolina, Marie Moore and husband James, Helen Mills and husband Nelson, Mary Lucado, all of Radford, Alice King, Blacksburg. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2001, at the Bain Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church conducted by the Rev. Phillip Martin and Pastor Mike Vest. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by Pulaski V.F.W. Post #1184. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Bain Chapel P.H. Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the Horne Funeral Service, Inc., Christiansburg.

Percy A. Nunn , age 92, passed away Friday, August 16, 2002 at his home. He was born on May 15, 1910 at Pulaski, Virginia to the late David and Lacy (Gernell) Nunn. He married the former Dorothy Melvin in Wellsburg, West Virginia on September 25, 1929; she survives him. He retired on January 1, 1969 from Sun Oil Company after 32 years of service. He was the Superintendent for Michigan, Ohio and Canada.

Surviving besides his wife of 72 years, Dorothy, are: one son, Kenneth (Charlotte) Nunn of Joplin, Missouri; two daughters, Peggy Jean (Lloyd) Salacina of Newaygo, and Darlene “Dee” Jungman of Gladwin; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur and James Nunn, both of Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Heather, two sisters and two brothers.



Private services were already held. The Sisson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangement. Memorials may be made to the Gladwin Community Arena or Mid-Michigan Hospice.

Nutter, Mary Shoun- age 89 of Radford, VA, formerly of Lenoir City, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 16, 2002 in Virginia. She was born May 8, 1913 in Butler, TN the daughter of Arthur and Grace Shoun. She was preceded in death by her husband, George V. Nutter Sr.; brothers: Sonny, Thelmer and John Shoun; sisters, Nancy Langlands and Edna Gissendanner; son-in-law, Louis Thompson. Mary is survived by her daughter, Anna Jean Thompson of Christianburg, VA; sons and daughters-in-law, George V. Nutter Jr and Melanie of Dawsonville, GA, John A. Nutter Sr. and Joan of White, GA; brother, George Shoun of Butler, TN; six grandchildren: Barry Thompson, Brenda Thompson Horne, Brian Thompson, Karen Nutter, Steve Nutter, John Nutter Jr., and seven great grandchildren. Mary was a lifetime member of The Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 188 and the First Baptist Church both in Lenoir City.The family will receive friends from 5-6:45 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, followed by an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services and interment will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the Loudon Co. Memorial Gardens with Rev. Eddie Click officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Carilion New River Valley Hospice, 700 Randolph Ave., Radford, VA. 24141 or Cambria Baptist Church Building Fund, 1310 Cambria St., Christianburg, VA 24073. O'DELL, Emily Louise, 82, of Dublin, was called to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 where she passed away peacefully at Highland Ridge Rehab. Center, Dublin. She was born May 20, 1920 in Sylvatus, Virginia to the late F. Clark Hurst and Rosa Q. Hurst. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Curtis M. Rupe and Paul W. O'Dell and by her brothers and sisters, Ernest Hurst, Verta Mae "Dolly" Allen, Gladys H. Kegley, Woodrow Hurst and Harless Hurst and by a very special nephew, Ron Holland. Mrs. O'Dell retired from Virginia Maid Hosiery with forty years of service. She was a faithful member of the Dora Highway Baptist Church where the late Rev. Edgar O'Dell baptized her on July 18, 1965. She remained active until her illness. There was nothing she loved more than her family, going to church, cooking and eating what she cooked. She leaves to cherish her memory, sisters, Alma H. Holland, of Dublin, Faye Slusher, of Dublin; brother-in-law, Jim Slusher, of Dublin; sister-in-law, Mrs. Ernest "Guida" Hurst, of Patrick County. Mrs. O'Dell never had children but thought of all her nieces and nephews as "hers". She leaves behind a special niece, Brenda H. Childress who was "the daughter she never had." She also leaves behind her extended family at Highland Ridge Rehab. in Dublin. She had many "Angels" there, especially her two special nurses, Kelly and April who were also her great nieces. Funeral service will be held Friday, March 14, 2003 at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Rev. Johnny Howlett and Rev. L. J. Rippey officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be Thursday evening from the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.
