ROOT, Sylvia Meador, 64, former Chesapeake resident, an associate professor
at Arizona State University and coordinator of the College of Nursing's
Graduate Program for Family Nurse Practitioners, died Thursday, April 20,
2000 of injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Phoenix. She lived in
Chesapeake from 1977 to 1994, when she accepted the position in Phoenix. A
certified family nurse practitioner, she had taught at Hampton University,
Norfolk State University, Radford University, Portsmouth General School of
Nursing and Tidewater Community College. Dr. Root held an Ed.D. from
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; a master's degree from
Virginia Commonwealth University and Medical College; and a bachelor's
degree in nursing, cum laude, from Old Dominion University. She earned her
nursing diploma from Radford Hospital School of Nursing. She was the wife of
Philip D. Hughes, former director of public works for Cave Creek, Arizona.
The two had been high school sweethearts in Radford, Virginia, where they
grew up, and had met again at the 40th reunion of their high school
graduating class in 1994. They were married July 20, 1996. In addition to
Mr. Hughes, she is survived by two sons, John H. Chappell of Norfolk and
Stephen Todd Chappell of Burke, Virginia; and two granddaughters, Merrie and
Emily Chappell of Burke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie
Ziegler Meador and Townes Hatcher Meador; her brother, Gerald Meador; and
her second husband, F. Carl Root, a public health service physician. Her
first marriage, to John H. Chappell, ended in divorce. Memorial services are
Thursday at 2 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Radford. A former
classmate, the Reverend Jerry Gibson will preside. The family invites
friends to celebrate her life at a 12 p.m. reception at the church preceding
the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the
scholarship program at the Radford University School of Nursing.

ROUSE, Frank E. Jr., 79, of Christiansburg, passed away suddenly Wednesday, April 11, 2001. He was a retired employee of American Electric Power with forty-two years of service. He was a member of the Cambria Baptist Church where he served as Deacon Emeritus. The son of the late Frank and Grace Rouse, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Rouse and Elizabeth (Betty) Shelor. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Rouse; one son, Stephen Rouse, Austin, Texas; and a special grandson, Nathanael Rouse, Lexington, N.C. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Cambria Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Allen Welborn with interment to follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad or the Cambria Baptist Church Building Fund. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg.

Wilmer Augusta “Willie” Ryan, 83, of Pulaski died Wednesday June 11, 2003 at Pulaski Community Hospital. Willie, who was also affectionately known by some of his family as “Billy,” was born on March 29, 1920, and was the son of the late Edna Mae Smith Ryan and Clyde Ranson Ryan. He was a longtime member of the Model Railroad Club, Manager and Projectionist for the Pulaski Theatre, and a member of the Board of the Friends of the Pulaski Theatre, he was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. He is survived by his loving wife: Ethel Kanode Ryan of Pulaski: a brother; Roger Ryan of Raleigh, N.C. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 P.M. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Rusty Whitener officiating. Interment will follow in Thorn Spring Cemetery. Visiting will be anytime Thursday after 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. SADLER, Marjorie Elizabeth Stafford, 70, of Pearisburg, passed away Thursday
evening, January 18, 2001, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in
Pearisburg. Mrs. Sadler was born on October 12, 1930, in Poplar Hill near
Pearisburg and was a daughter of the late Burky Banks and Annie Neice
Stafford. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers,
Willard, Emory, and Edward Stafford. Mrs. Sadler was a member of the
Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Bane. She is survived by her
husband of 52 years, John Ray Sadler of Staffordsville; one son and
daughter-in-law, Douglas W. and Darlene K. Sadler of Pearisburg; two darling
grandchildren, Ashley and David Sadler of Pearisburg; one sister, Katherine
S. Morris of Blacksburg; one brother, John J. Stafford of Narrows; special
nieces, Rhonda Crockett, and Shirley Meredith; and several other nieces and
nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 21, 2001, at 2
p.m. at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Brad Lewis and
the Rev. Eugene Harmon officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn
Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Saturday evening
from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. The family will
also receive friends at the home of her son, Douglas W. Sadler at 505 Mason
Court Drive in Pearisburg.

SANDERS, Larry Rupp, 68, of Radford, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2002, in Galax, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1955, as a Mechanical Engineer. He joined the United States Navy and attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey. He went on to become Lieutenant J. G. and Meteorologist at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. After his four year stint in the Navy, he then joined General Electric where he worked as an engineer in the Numerical Controls Division for fifteen years. He later spent five years working as General Manager of General Automation, a leading edge robotics firm. He finished off his career working for another White Consolidated Company, Bullard Machine Tool out of Bridgeport, Connecticut, he was Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Larry was a lively soul who enjoyed his friends and family, a game of golf and raising roses. He was preceded in death by a brother, James X. Sanders. He is survived by his former wife and friend, Betty Sanders of Dublin; two daughters and son-in-law, Lynn Sanders of Radford and Kay Marie and Brad Casper of Cincinnati, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Blair and Kim Sanders of Dublin; one brother, Billy Sanders of Pulaski; one sister, Helen Marie Dalton of Pulaski; and his seven grandchildren, Elliott, Mathew, Grace, Colton, Georgia, Carly and Brody who affectionately knew him as Poppy. A simple memorial service will be held at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford on Saturday, February 16, 2002, at 2 p.m. Pastor Terry Sternberg will be providing the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5th Street & North Washington, Pulaski, Va. 24301. Barry Eugene Sarver, age 49 of 5395 Collins Street, Dublin passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born December 23, 1953 in Pulaski, he was the son of the late Carl Eugene “Jiggs” Sarver and Victoria Mabry Sarver. Barry worked for the State of Virginia in the Department of Conservation and Recreation-Division of State Parks for a total of 33 years. He began working at the Claytor Lake State Park as an hourly employee when he was 15 years old in 1970. He then became Park Ranger at Claytor Lake in 1976, Chief Park Ranger from 1980 to 1982 at Westmoreland State Park, Chief Ranger at Seashore from 1982 to 1985, and back as Park Ranger, (in his hometown community), at Claytor Lake in 1985 until present. Barry touched a lot of lives through his work at the State Parks in which he developed many lasting friendships with numerous people and their families. He was very active with the Dublin Boy Scout Troop #100 serving as the Assistant Scoutmaster in which his son was a member. He loved the people in Pulaski County and in his hometown of Dublin. Surviving are: his wife Jeanette Carol Krejci Sarver, Dublin; son, Isaac Jordan Sarver, Dublin; sister and brother-in-law, Vickey and “Jimbo” McCraw, Dublin; niece, Andi McCraw, Dublin; five aunts, numerous cousins and many special friends and co-workers. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with the Rev. Michael Blouse officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bobwhite Blvd, Pulaski. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the Boy Scout Troop, #100, c/o Rev. Michael Blouse, Scoutmaster, 5112 Armstrong Street, Dublin, Va. 24084 or the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements.

SAYERS, William P., (Bill), 75, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003. He graduated from Draper High School in 1946 and served in the Army, 1946-1948, with the occupational forces in Italy. He worked for Jefferson Electric in Roanoke for 15 years and belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 673 and worked for Davis H. Elliott for 26 years, retiring in 1992. He was predeceased by parents, Georgie Huddle and Charles Benton Sayers; brother, Charles B. Sayers, Jr.; and sister, Evelyn Faulkner. He is survived by his wife, Aileen Laprad Sayers; son, Christo-pher Sayers, Roanoke; stepdaughter and her husband, Carolyn Sue and Gary Fulton, three stepgrandchildren, all of Fincastle; brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Iris Sayers, Radford; Edwin and Mickey Sayers, Garland Sayers, all of Pulaski; John and Catherine Sayers, Staunton. Services were held at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Thursday, June 5 with burial in Cedar Lawn.

Robert Corneilus Schronce, 72, of Newbern Heights, died Friday morning, May 2, 2003, in Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born May 8, 1930 in Lincolnton, N.C. and was the son of the late Boyd Cornelius Schronce. He was a member of the Dublin United Methodist Church where he was active in the Methodist's mens activities. Surviving are mother, Edna Carpenter Schronce of Lincolnton, N.C.; wife, Elizabeth Warren Schronce of Pulaski; son and daughter-in-law, Mark R. and Sandy Schronce of Pulaski; one granddaughter, Amanda Schronce of Pulaski; and one brother, Edward Schronce of Lincolnton, N.C. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Travis officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be Sunday afternoon from the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour. SCHUELER, Dorothy A., 97, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, January 12, 2000, at the Showalter Center. She was born in New Jersey on November 9, 1902 to the late Carl and Emily Russell WIEDMANN. Mrs. Schueler was an active member of the Warm Hearth Writers Workshop, and contributed a story to Nikki Giovanni's book entitled "GRANDMOTHERS." She also enjoyed being the adopted grandmother of many of Mrs. Ogliaruso's classes at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School. She was preceded in death by her son, Gene L. SCHUELER, a grandson, Eric SCHUELER, and a sister, Beatrice TOMPKINS. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane and Charles HOOVER, Blacksburg, Joan ROACH of New Jersey; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Marion RITTER of North Carolina.; and a brother, Carl WIEDMANN of New Jersey. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2000 at 3 p.m. at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Herbert Hobbs officiating. SCOTT, James Burnett, 76, of Pearisburg, Va. passed away Thursday evening,
December 19, 2002 in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr.
Scott was born on December 26, 1925 and was a son of the late Atlas Burnett
and Ollie M. Scott , of McCoy, Va. Besides his parents, he was preceded in
death by one brother and sister-in-law, Alvie E. and Zuelema T. Scott, one
sister, Edith S. Fleeman, one sister-in-law, Mary H. Scott, three
brothers-in-law, Raymond (Sonny) Meredith, Floyd Buddy Meredith, Joe L.
Dowdy, mother and father-in-law, Mary and Raymond Meredith. Mr. Scott was a
WWII Veteran having served four years in the United States Army Air Corp. He
was a member of the Local Union 100 Sheet Metal Workers of Roanoke where he
retired, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in
Pembroke, Va. and he was a member of Giles Lodge #106 A.F & A.M., a member
of the Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Shrine Temple, both in Roanoke. Mr.
Scott is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Helen (Margie)Meredith
Scott, of Pearisburg; one son, Darrell Wayne Scott and friend Betty
Voorhees, of Pearisburg; and ex-daughter-in-law, Pamela O. Scott, of
Pembroke; one loving granddaughter, Amanda Paige Duncan and husband Chris
Duncan of Pearisburg; five brothers, J. W. Scott, of Lynchburg, Franklin
(Billy) and Nancy Scott, of Lynchburg, Bobby and Barbara Scott, of
Blacksburg, Denny and Tammy Scott, of Ironto, Roy and Sue Scott, of
Blacksburg; three sisters, Dorothy and Bill Sexton, of Pearisburg, Marie and
Dick Sackett, of Michigan, Irene McCoy, of Blacksburg; three sisters-in-law,
Elsie Dowdy, of Pearisburg, Joann and Doug Eaton, of Ripplemead, Dorance and
Bill Simpson, of Va. Beach, Carol Jean and Sammy Morrison, of Barboursville,
W.Va.; and numerous nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be conducted
