An ambulance was called and Mr. RADFORD rushed to the hospital where it was announced he was dead on arrival.

It was reported that Mr. RADFORD had been negotiating for the purchase of property owned by Mr. Howell and the two parties were planning to close the transaction today.

RADFORD RITES PLANNED

Funeral services for Montague S. RADFORD, 47, who dropped dead in a downtown business concern yesterday, will be held tomorrow at 2 o’clock from the Shiloh church in Bland county with the Rev. Virgil Anderson officiating.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie; three daughter and two sons. The body was removed from Thomas M. Seagle and Sons funeral home at 1 o’clock to the family residence in Bland.

David RAFLO, 77, of Morehead Lane, Pulaski, died Friday evening in the Pulaski Community Hospital.
A retired Pulaski merchant, he was born in Philadelphia, Pa., June 30, 1900, and the son of the late Jacob & Celia DAVIDWITZ RAFLO.
He was a member of Pythagoras Lodge No. 239 AF & AM and a veteran of World War I
Several nieces and nephews survive.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Oakwood cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the charity of choice.
Visiting will be today at Stevens and the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. The family will be at the home of W.H. Wysor, Jr. 910 Prospect Ave.

ROBERT RAINES

Robert Connor Raines was born December 4, 1887, in Pulaski, Virginia, and died in the Veteran's Hospital at Jefferson Barracks Saturday, May 23, 1936, aged 48 years, 5 months and 19 days. He was the son of George M. Raines and Jane Connor Raines. His mother preceded him in death when he was a small boy and his father died seven years ago.

When seven years of age, Robert came to Missouri with his father, who had united in marriage to Miss Katie Hicks, under whose guidance and love Robert grew to manhood. At the age of nine years he was baptized in the M.E. Church, South, at Farmington and was active in young people's work for many years. He was educated in the public schools of Farmington.

When the United States entered the World War Robert volunteered and joined the S.A.T.C. at Washington University, St. Louis. Being an expert mechanic, he was soon promoted to the position of instructor in the mechanical corps and was made Sargeant of his Company. After some months he was transferred to an engineering corps in Norfolk, Va., and was awaiting transportation overseas when the war ended. After receiving his honorable discharge he continued to work in Farmington, where he has since resided.

On July 29, 1929, he was united in marriage to Miss Virginia LaBruyere of Farmington, and they were the parents of one son, Bobby.

Besides his widow and small son, he is survived by his step-mother, Mrs. Geo. M. Raines and a half-sister, Martha (Mrs. Lee) Orten of St. Louis and the following brothers and sisters: Edgar Raines of Carbondale, Ill.; William Raines of Detroit, Mich.; Nannie (Mrs. Tony) Pollard of Troy, Mo.; and Jennie (Mrs. A. W.) Johnson of West Norfolk, Va.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Cozean Funeral Home in Farmington by the Rev. F. Q. Crockett, pastor of the Farmington Baptist Church. Mrs. Edgar Hill of St. Louis, a cousin of the deceased, sang "In the Garden," and a quartet from the Baptist Church also sang a number. Interment was in the K. of P. cemetery, where military services were conducted by the Walter H. LePere Post of the American Legion.

RAKES, Elder Sidney Eldridge, 86, of 4476 Deer Place, Dublin passed away peacefully in his sleep Monday, July 14, 2003 at his home. Born June 14, 1917 in Dickerson County, Virginia, he was the son of the late George Lee Rake and Alvertie McCormick Rakes. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Elma Owens and Jeston Rakes; and one son-in-law, Charles Thomas Foley. Elder Rakes became a member of the Wilson's Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Snowville, Virginia in April 1953. He was ordained as an Elder on July 31, 1976. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Violet Gay Mabry Rakes of Dublin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Sidney Roger Rakes and wife, Mary of Reva, Va., Randy Cecil Rakes and wife, Susan of Pulaski; three daughters and son-in-law, Evelyn Rakes Foley of Hixson, Tenn., Carolyn Rakes Johnston and husband, Douglas Johnson, Sr. of Radford, Mary Rakes Myers of Dublin; seven grandchildren, Kevin Rakes, Donald Rakes, Angie Goad, Douglas Johnston, Jr., Lori Kessinger, Matt Rakes and Emily Myers; six great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph M. Rakes and wife Beulah of Dublin, Noah L. Rakes and wife Barbara of Locust Grove, Va.; two sisters, Bertha R. Dalton of Pulaski, Ethel R. Cox of Claudeville, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with Elder Kenneth Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements for the family.

RAMSEY, Ira Weston, 86, of Dublin, died Sunday, February 18, 2001 at
SunBridge Nursing Home, Dublin. He was born July 7, 1914 at Hollybrook, the
son of the late Loranza Naff and Leona Adeline Miller Ramsey. In addition to
his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Alice Lucille Ramsey;
two brothers, Herman Edward Ramsey and Leon Kenneth Ramsey; a sister-in-law,
Nancy Ramsey. He was a historical buff of Bland County happenings and was
interested in political activities. He is survived by one brother, Paul
Ramsey, of Little Creek Community, Dublin; two sisters-in-law, Maggie Ellen
Ramsey and Edith A. Ramsey both of Dublin; several caring nieces and
nephews. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1p.m. at the A. Vest and Sons
Funeral Home, White Gate with the Rev. J.P. Hale officiating. Burial in the
Shiloh Cemetery, Hollybrook. Visiting will be Monday at the funeral home
after 1 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

RAMSEY, Talmadge Walter, 76, of Pearisburg, died Friday, April 4, 2003 in Montgomery Regional Hospital. Mr. Ramsey was born on February 24, 1927 in Pulaski, Va. and was a son of the late Wilfred Walter and Elizabeth Jones Ramsey. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Moye Ramsey, an infant brother, Robert William Ramsey and a sister, Mary Sue Ramsey. He is survived by his devoted friend, Zona Lindsey of Little Creek; his daughter, Pamela Warden and husband James, of Pearisburg; his grandchildren, Amy Wright, of Roanoke and Andy Warden, of Pearisburg; three brothers, Joseph Ramsey, of Dublin, Doug Ramsey, of Pulaski, and Roger Ramsey and wife Reiko, of Draper; three sisters, Zollie Semones and husband Saford, of Pulaski, Peggy Hoback, of Pulaski and Patsy Weinbender and husband Ed, of Radford; and special friends, Vivian and Emory Sadler, of Little Creek, Angie and Brian Higginbotham, of Pembroke, Timmy and Cathy Lindsey, of Arkansas, Bonnie and Wayne Woodyard and Woody Harrell, of Little Creek. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 6, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Chapel, in Pearisburg with the Rev. Billy R. Akers officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family welcomes friends to join in a celebration of his life on Saturday, April 5, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home. Lonnie Naff Ramsey, 71, of Route 2, Bland, Va., died Wednesday evening in a Pulaski hospital.
Survivors include the widow, Leona Miller Ramsey; four sons, Kenneth, Herman, and Paul, of Redford, Va., and Ira, of Bland; three brothers, Jim, of Pulaski, Va., and Tony, and Shular, of Bland.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. from the Shiloh, Va. Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Kitts and the Rev. Lewis Kegley in charge.
Interment will be in the Shiloh cemetery.

RATCLIFFE, Auburn Phleger, 82, of Radford, died Saturday, February 26, 2000
in Carilion New River Medical Center. He was a member of The First Baptist
Church, a retired employee of the Lynchburg Foundry Co. and a member and
past master of Virginia May Lodge #38 AF and AM. Surviving are his wife,
Vera D. Ratcliffe of Radford; a daughter, Lucy Hanks of Radford; a son, A.
Michael Ratcliffe of Richmond; a sister, Gertrude Williams of Parkton, Md.;
and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, February
28, 2000 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Burton
officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Virginia May
Lodge #38 AF and AM will conduct Masonic Graveside Services. Members are
asked to meet at the cemetery at 11:15 a.m. The family will receive friends
from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, February 27, 2000 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home,
Radford.

RATCLIFFE, Doris Marie Firebaugh, 71, of 1002 Dora Highway, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2003 at the Pulaski Community Hospital. Born January 8, 1932 in Roanoke, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Carrie Ola Brown Firebaugh. One brother, Doug Firebaugh; and two sisters, Patricia Firebaugh and Estelle Hunley, also preceded her in death. She was a member of the Thornspring United Methodist Church. Surviving are a husband, Horace Roger Ratcliffe of Pulaski; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Margaret Ratcliffe of Draper, Anthony Ratcliffe of Draper, Johnny Ratcliffe of Missississippi, Frank and Dale Ratcliffe of Alabama, Michael and Mona Ratcliffe of Pulaski, Va., Rodney Ratcliffe of Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Jack Firebaugh of Roanoke, Va.; sisters, Hazel Rupe of Pulaski, Dreama Ritter of Pulaski, Peggy Lefler of Draper; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski with the Pastor Darlene Marshall officiating. Interment will follow at the Thornspring Cemetery, Pulaski. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bobwhite Blvd., Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements.

RATCLIFFE, Raymond Frazier, 61, of Blue Ridge, passed away Friday, August 29, 2003. He was born June 24, 1942 in Pulaski County and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Raymond and Julia Boyd White Ratcliffe. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary T. Ratcliffe; his children, Tim Ratcliffe and wife Debi, Lydean Spangler and husband David, Dale English and wife Cass; grandchildren, Renee, Erik, Mary and Laura Spangler, Michael, Grace and Alex English; brother, Wayne Ratcliffe and wife Doris and many other in-laws, nieces and nephews. Raymond served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963. He retired from Branch Highways where he was a crane and heavy equipment mechanic. He was a member of Villamont Presbyterian Church, was a former assistant Scout Master of Troop 136, a member of the Order of the Arrow and attended Pulaski High School. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at Oakey's East Chapel with the Rev. John Kearfott Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's East Chapel, 977-3909.

J. C. RAY, a well known resident of the county, died last night at the University hospital, Charlottesville, following an illness of eight weeks from complication to relieve which an operation was performed, but to no permanent avail.

The body will be brought to Pulaski. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock from his late home, northwest of the city, and burial will be in the Ray Cemetery.

The deceased was one of seven children of E.D. and Margaret KELLEY RAY, of whom survives only one sister, Mrs. C.L. DILLON, of Pulaski. He was born November 3, 1869, so was in his 59th year of life. He married Miss Louise WOODYARD, who survives with three sons, G.D., W.C. and R.B. RAY, all of Pulaski.

Mr. RAY had been a member of the Christian church about 30 years. He was well known throughout the community and esteemed by a large circle of neighbors and friends, all of who mourn his passing.

Mrs. Annie Gause REED, 72, died this morning at the local hospital after a lingering illness.

Surviving are eight children, William REED, H. Clay REED, Harry B. REED, and Mrs. John H. DOUGLAS of Portsmouth; Mrs. William D. GREEN, of Roanoke, R. Kent REED, of Lynchburg, Ralph R. REED, of San Francisco, and Mrs. Gilbert HORTON of Pulaski; one brother, John WHITE, of Pulaski, three sisters, Mrs. Myra FIELDER, Mrs. Emma WHITE and Miss Margaret WHITE of Roanoke and 20 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Lutheran church at 2 p. m. Friday by Rev. Lester A. Wertz. Interment will be in Oakwood..

REED, Lettie Victoria, 90, of Christiansburg, died Sunday, January 28, 2001 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born in Floyd County, Va. on June 16, 1910 to the late John W. and Rachel Duncan White, and she was also preceded in death by her husband, Alva Reed. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Linwood and Erma White of Blacksburg; a sister, Elizabeth Flinchum of Salem; two grandchildren, Tonia Daner of Ruckersville, Va., Ronnie White of Elliston; three great-grandchildren, Scott White, Shelly White and Jahred Danker. The family wishes to thank the nurses on the right side of Heritage Hall, and the nurses on the 4th floor at Montgomery Regional Hospital for all the kind care given during Mrs. Reed's illness. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Richard Kingrea officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital, P. O. Box 318, Memphis, Tenn. 38101. Friends may call anytime after 4 p.m. Tuesday and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Pentecostal Holiness Church at 305 Phlegar Street, Christiansburg. REED, ROY ESKELL, 94, of Aston, Fla., formerly of Christiansburg, died Saturday, December 15, 2001. A retired deputy sheriff of Montgomery County and Justice of the Peace, a Navy Veteran, American Legion post #21 of Florida, a life member of Disabled Veterans of America, (DAV). Mr. Reed is preceded in death by his wives, Eva Richardson Reed and Sue Balangee Reed; one daughter, Marie; two brothers; two sisters and one stepson. He is survived by his wife, Mona Matthews Reed; three step-grandsons, Don E. Williams, Douglas Williams, both of Connecticut, David Williams of California; one stepgreat-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2001 with the service to follow at 11 a.m. in the family gathering room at the Horne Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard H. Horne officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg is serving the family.
