PHILLIPS, Martin W., of Willis, born on July 3, 1914, passed away Monday, May 8, 2000 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was preceded in death by his only son, Glen B. Phillips; a son-in-law, Robert R. Lee; and his parents, Andrew Curtis and Lena May Phillips; also two sisters, Dove Hall and Ola Harris; four brothers, Terry, Edgar, Huger and Wyatt Phillips. He leaves behind his loving and dedicated wife of sixty-four years, Vernie Akers Phillips of Willis. Also surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Erma J. and Walter Reed of Alum Ridge, Ollie May Lee of Mechanicsville; daughter-in-law and husband, Betty Phillips Ratliff and Mitch of Bedford; grandchildren, Phillip and Susan Reed, Sharon and Donnie Cox, Donna and John Wikstrom, Deborah Minahan, Robert Lee, II, Paul and Susan Phillips, Wesley and Stephanie Phillips; stepgrandson, Chris Wikstrom; great-grandchildren, Amanda and Greg Conner, Alicia and Jason Slaughter, Patrick Minahan; sister, Bernice Mitchell of Salem; brothers, Victor Phillips, Carlysle Phillips, J. D. Phillips, all of Willis; many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Phillip Weddle. Martin was a building contractor in Floyd and surrounding counties for many years. He was well known and loved by all who knew him and will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. He had many interests and hobbies. His woodworking and beautiful musical instruments that he handcrafted are very precious to his family. Also, his love of music that he has passed on to his family and many others. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2000 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd with the Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Burial will be in Big Sand Cemetery in beautiful Indian Valley. Friends may call at the Maberry Funeral Home after 8 a.m. Tuesday where the family will be to greet all who wish to visit between 6 and 9 p.m. Thanks and appreciation to all who have helped with their love and concern through this difficult time. Every act of kindness will be forever remembered. Special thanks to all at Skyline Manor Nursing Home who have cared for him when the time came for care that family could no longer provide. Before Martin's long struggle with illness, he was a happy, laughing person, and an inspiration to all who knew him. Today he is smiling down on us all while he awaits our coming to join him. Love to all.

PHILLIPS, Rev. Samuel Jett, 99, of Indian Valley, passed away Sunday,
December 22, 2002 in a Galax Hospital. He was a minister, pastoring and
evangelizing in Virginia and West Virginia and was in the Virginia
Conference Service of the Pentecostal Holiness Church for over sixty years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Freda Wade Phillips, two daughters,
Syble Keys and Edna D. Burkholder, and two sons-in-law, Edward Tate and
Bennie H. Burkholder. Survivors include a daughter, Eula Tate, of Conyers,
Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Carlos Phillips, of the home, Indian Valley,
Rudolph Phillips, of Willoughby, Ohio, Sammie and Ruby Phillips, of Indian
Valley, Donnie and Cenie Phillips, of Lucama, N.C., Gerald and Wanda
Phillips, of Radford; son-in-law, Trevor Keys, of Mentor, Ohio; 19
grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral
services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at the Maberry Funeral
Home Chapel, Floyd with Rev. James Walker, Rev. Kenneth Kingrea and Rev.
Vinton Quesenberry officiating. Interment will follow in the Appalachian
Pentecostal Holiness Conference Cemetery, Dublin. The family will receive
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2002 at the Maberry Funeral
Home.

SANFORD - Virginia Elizabeth Gravely Pokemire, 83, of 46 Knight Heron Court, died Sunday (2/23/03) at Harnett Manor.

A native of Pulaski County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Samuel Keister Gravely and Roxie Jane Barley Gravely.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. George Akers. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery.

She is survived by sons, Benny Pokemire of Sanford and Canny Pokemire of Spanaway,Wash.; daughters, Laponda Angel of Lillington and Jackie Hyden of Cameron; brothers, Arnold Gravely of Salem, Va., and Bobby Gravely of Christiansburg, Va.; sisters, Geraldine Rose of Elliston, Va., and Harriett Wade of Sterling, Va.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.



The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and at other times at 225 Independence Way, Heritage Village, Cameron.

Galbeth McKnight “Mack” Porter, 75, of 5438 Alum Spring Road, Pulaski died Tuesday morning, May 13, 2003 at his home. He was born in Ivanhoe, Virginia on July 30, 1927 and was the son of the late Garnett Porter and Oakley Porter. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Edward “Nub” Porter. He was a retired employee of RAAP. Surviving are: his wife, Dorothy Porter, Pulaski; children, Sharion Porter, Pulaski, Lugene P. Cabaniss, Pulaski, Rickey Porter, Pulaski; five step-children, Kathy Payne, Pulaski, Sharon Privett, Tenn., Teresa Nelson, Wythe County, Karen Hill, Wythe County, James Payne, Wythe County; four sisters, Norma Taylor, Richmond, Burleane Mumpower, Richmond, Wilma Barrett, Richmond, Tommie Sheffey, Ivanhoe; brother, Bobby Porter, Louisa; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be Thursday evening from the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

PORTERFIELD, Mabel Hutchinson, 88, of 142 Porterfield Lane in Newport peacefully went to her eternal rest after a brief illness at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Born in Craig Co., but raised since the age of four in Giles Co., she was a daughter of the late Walter and Anna Lafon Hutchinson. She loved her farm, was always active in the community affair of Newport, and was a devoted and dedicated member of Sherry Memorial Christian Church and was looking forward helping the congregation celebrate their one hundreth anniversary this year. A sister, Sue H. Ferraraccio, preceded her in death, and a brother Ross Hutchinson. She leaves to cherish her memory, a son and daughter-in-law, Ponzi and Alice Porterfield, of Newport; a daughter, Charlotte P. McMahan, of Newport; four grandchildren, Lori Porterfield, of Newport, Alison Cox, of Peterstown, W.Va., Teresa Johnston, of Ripplemead, Jeremy Porterfield, of Newport; two great-grandsons, Michael Cumbee, of Pembroke, Dylan Johnston, of Ripplemead; a sister, Pauline Gilbert, of Pulaski; a foster brother, Phillip Gaylord, of Pembroke; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with burial following in the Porterfield Cemetery on the Mt. Lake Road in Newport. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Sherry Memorial Christian Church, Mt. Lake Road, Newport, Va. 24128 or the charity of your choice.

POTEET, David Crawford, 65, of 4515 Newbern Heights Drive, Pulaski, went to be with his Lord Saturday, February 8, 2003. Born September 15, 1937 in Bluefield, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Russell and Virginia Poteet. He attended the Blacksburg Christian Fellowship, Blacksburg. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Dr. Poteet received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University, his Masters degree from the University of Richmond, and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. He has been a Professor of History with New River Community College, Dublin for 14 years. He was a faculty sponsor for Campus Crusade for Christ while at New River College. Before his time at New River, he taught in Oklahoma and at Averett College in Danville, Virginia. He was a dedicated teacher and loved by faculty and students. Dr. Poteet wrote a weekly column on Christian Living for the Southwest Times. Surviving are his wife, Karen Agee Poteet, of Pulaski; his children, David Crawford Poteet, II and wife, Tish Poteet, of Blacksburg, Carolyn Virginia Poteet, of Hillsborough, N.C., Derek Andrew Poteet and wife, Porsha Poteet, of Centreville, Va.; grandchildren, Rachel Poteet, Clara Poteet, Sophia Poteet and Katherine Poteet; sister, Judith Poteet Cole, of Denver, N.C.; brother, Wade Hampton Poteet, of Tucson, Ariz.; special aunt, Elizabeth Crawford Crist, of Bluefield, Va. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Blacksburg Christian Fellowship with Elder Paul Ribbe officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church Cemetery, Meadows of Dan, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be given to a Christian Charity of your choice. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements.

POUND, Madeline S., 78, of Pulaski, died peacefully in her sleep at her home on July 11, 2003 after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on October 25, 1924 and was the daughter of the late Charles and Dora Spencer. Madeline was a retired Pulaski County school teacher. At the center of her life was her church, Dublin United Methodist. She served the Lord well through many facets of church service. Madeline was the first woman to serve as chair of the church's Administrative Board, long-time teacher of the Friendship Bible Class and a member of the original building committee. She took great pride in being a part of the United Methodist Women and the Seekers Group. She served as president of the local UMW and the Wytheville District UMW. She was a member of the Holston Conference UMW Mission team and was a delegate to the Holston Annual Conference. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Dr. Winsdon N. Pound, Pulaski; son, Charles W. "Chuck" Pound and his wife Michele of Roanoke; daughter, Carolyn P. Jarrells and her husband Jeff of Mechanicsville; five grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Pound and Vincent, Rachael and Joseph Jarrells; two sisters, Margaret S. Howell and her husband Warren of Lynchburg, Thelma S. Puryear and her husband Gene of Lexington, S.C. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Dublin United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Talmadge A. Stanley of Emory and Henry College, Rev. Stuart Kelly of Trinity Church of the Brethren in Troutville, Rev. Doug Wingner Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Lynchburg and Mrs. Sue Thompson Hubble of Dublin United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the old Dublin Cemetery. Visiting will be Monday evening from the Dublin United Methodist Church, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Rebuilding Fund of the Dublin United Methodist Church, P.O. She was the daughter of the late James Thomas TROLINGER and Mary Elizabeth KING TROLINGER. She was born in Pulaski County, July 19, 1877. Surviving are one, Lewis Stearnes PRICE, Atlanta Georgia; two nieces, Mrs. Mary T. STEGER, Mrs. Richard J. WAUGH, both in Pulaski; one nephew, James T. TROLINGER, Richmond. Funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Steven's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gordon GOODGAME officiating. Burial will follow in Thornspring Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Steven's Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday.

PRICE, Russell Clayton, 89, of Christiansburg, passed away at the home on
Monday, December 11, 2000. he retired from Hercules in 1973. He was preceded
in death by two sisters; and a daughter, Jackie Jo Johnston. He is survived
by his wife, Gladys Atkins Price; three sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur G.
and Nadine Price, Christiansburg, Barry R. and Faye Price, Shawsville,
Russell L. and Kathy Price, Christiansburg; one son-in-law, Jerry E.
Johnston. Also surviving are three stepbrothers; six grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren; also a very special friend, Hannah Abate, who has been
with us through it all. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, December
13, 2000 at the Horne Funeral Chapel with Dr. Glenn Griffin officiating.
Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial gardens. In lieu of flowers the
family suggests donations be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad or
Carilion Hospice. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday
evening at the Horne Funeral Service.

PRICE, Lee Robinson, 92, a lifetime resident and farmer of Blacksburg, died
Friday, January 14, 2000, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. He was born in
Montgomery County on September 18, 1907, to the late Christian Lewis and
Lucy Robinson Price. Lee was also preceded in death by his wife, Grace
Bennett Price. He is survived by his nieces, Janice Price of New Castle,
Dorothy Belle Price, Edith Sayers, Mable Lucas, all of Blacksburg, Ann Sairs
and Louise MacKenzie, both of Florida; his nephews and their spouses, Gene
and Carolyn Price of Blue Ridge, Glen and Barbara Price, Ben and Carol
Crawford, Ralph and Katherine Price, all of Blacksburg, Tom and Betty
Slusser, Robert and Joan Slusser, all of Florida; other nieces and nephews;
and very special friends, Cody Dickerson and Dr. Charles Boatwright. Funeral
services will be conducted Sunday, January 16, 2000, at 3:30 p.m. in the
McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Gilbert officiating.
Graveside services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in Westview Cemetery,
Blacksburg. The family will receive friends immediately following the
service on Sunday. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

PRICE, Randall Lee, (Bubbie), 12, of Riner, went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 9, 2003. He is preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Wayne Price. He is survived by his parents, Randy and Kathy Price; a sister, Jessica Price, all of the home; sister, Cristy Wilhelm of Pulaski; a niece, Catlyn Wilhelm of the home; grandparents, Fred and Marie Thompson of Riner; aunt, Darlene Fitting, Riner; aunt, Teresa Thompson, "Randall's Tater Tot" of Riner; aunt, Donna Slagle, of Chicago, Ill.; aunt, Doris Wilborn, of Richmond, Va.; aunt, Linda Schoonover of Michigan; cousins, Matthew Gardner and Teresa East, both of Riner, Timothy and Christopher Slage of Chicago, Ill.; special friend, Tim East, Christiansburg; and many friends. Randall was a very special boy who touched all our lives. He loved riding his four-wheeler and helping on the farm. We love you and miss your smile. A longtime C & P Telephone employee in Christiansburg, a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Christiansburg, and a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kent B. Price and daughter, Edrianne Phillips. She is survived by her grandsons and their spouses, Josh and Karen Phillips, Chris and Alexandra Phillips; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Chase and Gage Phillips, Haley, Harrison, Duncan and Devon Phillips. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2002, at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2002, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Father Phillip Paradine officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
