5. Non-governmental environmental organizations in the Kyrgyz Republic
As of today there are over 200 non-governmental environmental organizations (NGO) addressing environmental issues in the Republic. The environmental movement in the Kyrgyz Republic emerged as a result of democratic changes in our society. These NGOs represent interests of the population in ensuring provision of legitimate constitutional rights for a favorable environment. Aleine Environmental Movement NGO is among the first registered in the Kyrgyz Republic (July 16, 1993).
Among the others there are ‘Aalam’, ‘Asian Environmental Group’, ‘Tabiyat’, BIOM, ‘Physicians for nuclear war prevention’, ‘Green women’, ‘Tree of life’, ‘Ecobilim’, “Jaratylysh’, ‘Independent Ecological Expertise’, ‘Bio-protection’, ‘Geo-ecology’ and other NGOs. Environmental NGOs distribution by regions of the Kyrgyz Republic is given in Table 5-1 below.

Support to Kyrgyzstan’s environmental movement development was provided by many international organizations, such as: ISAR, HIVOS, Milieukontakt Oost - Europa, UNDP, UNESCO, World Bank, USAID, Soros Foundation - Kyrgyzstan, Fredrick Ebert Foundation, Conrad Adenaur Foundation, KNOW HOW Fund, etc.
Many environmental NGOS in Kyrgyzstan are members of the Socio-Environmental Union, Biostan (Central-Asian Environmental Organization), and LEEP (Legal Eurasian Environmental Protection).
The UNESCO Project on Environmental Monitoring of High-mountainous Systems in Central Asia at the example of Tian-Shian, World Bank and KG Government Project on National Environmental Protection Plan, GEF Project on Western Tian-Shian Biodiversity Preservation, participation in developing project on Issyk-Kul Bio-reserve, State Program on Environmental Protection and Rational Use of Natural Resources in the Kyrgyz Republic up to 2005, Chon-Kemin Biosphere Territory with National Park; participation in establishing Council under the International Aral Sea Salvation Foundation, Milieukontakt “Environmental actions”, Kyrgyzstan Public and Business Forum Project, and in development of pilot project on National Environmental Hygiene Action Plan in Bishkek; and others.
5.2 Draft KG Laws Under Discussions
At present draft laws are under discussion that pertain to the following: Animals, Plants, Drinking Water, Water, Nature Protection, Ecological Expertise, Atmosphere Protection, and National Park Protection .
Materials of the Department on Ecology and Use of Natural Resources (SAEPF) on informational-analytical provision and environmental education were used during preparation of the information presented above about non-governmental organizations.
