Intelligent Mobility Agent for Complex Geographic Environments
Project Summary
In our daily life we use a variety of services and applications, which are scattered within the complex European urban and rural geographic environments. These services are or soon will be electronically organised and supported. Transport plays a major role in our interaction with the services, since in most cases it connects us with them. “IMAGE provides the users with mobile, personalised location based information on services, how to reach them and how to pay for them with mobile flexible means.” The IMAGE project attempts to build on the existing and future infrastructure and know-how in order to get one step ahead from any previous attempt on mobility information to citizens. IMAGE will design and develop an open, modular technical platform (the “IMAGE platform”) that will facilitate a win-win e-business environment so as to introduce a holistic approach to end user’s, personalised electronic access to useful services for everyday life needs (where travel is a core element).

Macro-Economic and Urban Trends in Europe’s Information Society
Project Summary
The overall objective of the MUTEIS project is to explain and understand functional and spatial diversity in Europe's digital economy both from a macro and local/urban perspective.

The consortium aims at improving knowledge of the macro economic impact of the digital economy, but also on the origins and causes of local diversities in the development of the digital economy. The experiences at urban level help to understand the macro-overall pattern.

The analysis should improve the design and implementation of policy action on European, national and urban levels that efficiently and effectively help Europe's transition into the digital economy in a sustainable way.

The project is divided in three, interrelated stages. (1) The first is a comparative, in-depth analysis of the macro-economic growth performance within the framework of the new emerging digital environment of the European growth success stories of the 1990s. (2) The second stage concerns a detailed, more qualitative analysis of the most important regional and urban developments in each of these countries, whether the result of private "natural" growth agglomeration effects or public initiatives, and focussing again on the particular role of IST in such developments. (3)The third stage aims at a wider European dissemination of the results amongst the science community as well as the European urban community; it also includes the application of the developed methodology to other European urban regions.

This latter analysis is explicitly aimed at diffusing information and practical experience emerging from the possible "best-practice" urban development cases studied scheduled for the second phase of the project itself.

Coordination mechanisms for eEurope Smart Card Charter implementation
Project Summary
The eEurope Smart Card Charter (SCC) has resulted in industry approved action plans and steering mechanisms to initiate and support common deployment and specifications for smart cards in Europe. SmartCord provides essential infrastructure and coordination mechanisms necessary to reinforce this momentum and bring the SCC Action Plan to fruitful conclusion. It empowers the Smart Card Charter Steering Committee, enables the High Level Group, involves the Smart Card Constituency, and ensures essential coordination required with and between the twelve Trailblazer initiatives. Benefits will be reduced industry fragmentation increased links with European R&D and relevant standardisation initiatives, and improved interoperability of smart card based systems and services. The resulting increase in deployment and adoption of smart cards will accelerate the development of the digital services economy in Europe.

Project Summary
The project will establish a large scale pilot in order to perfom cross border transactions over the Internet with a stored value smart card. The project will cover both EU and non EU countries and will contribute to the adoption of secure payment mechanisms in order to B2C commercial transactions over the Internet.
Balcard smartcards for cross border transactions over open networks with the use of stored value aim to satisfy the vision for global networked economy where consumers, workers and enterprises can seamlessly and dynamically come together and interact through an ubiquitous infrastructure that promotes both trust and confidence. Balcard will build and increase trust and confidence in performing payment over the Internet for goods and services. Also it will allow the growing number of Internet users to make micropayments in an efficient and cheaper way. Balcard will administrate the obstacles delaying the massive take off e-commerce. Balcard will encounter privacy problem due to the fact that pre-paid card will require no input of personal information. It will also provide an authentic value that is transferable and acceptable by both consumer and supplier. The security of the transaction for the supplier is also covered due to the fact that he/she is instantly paid.

Cad Application ProTocol INitiative
Project Summary
The CAPTIN project aims to define and implement a new approach towards connecting smart Card Accepting Devices (ATM and POS) with the issuer system, to replace the current non-standardised interface. The project will define a common CAD protocol, independent from hardware and software, similar to the definition of e.g. a GSM handset. The result should be a reduction of CAD prices; the better focus of card acquirers on core business; authorisation system becoming standardised and interoperable; new entrants having better access to the market because technological barriers disappear; a lower investment for merchants. The objectives of this accompanying measure is to start up an industry association with the key players called the CAP Forum with the emphasis to acquirers. The project targets the establishment of this CAP Forum. All specifications emerging from this forum will be open to all interested parties.
