Implementation of e-business solutions in SME’s to obtain competitive advantage and strengthening regional and European Innovation
Project Summary
The proposed project will demonstrate that European companies through implementation of new technology and the take up of best practice in the field of E-business will reach the economy of scale and the competitive advantages of larger enterprises. A large group of European companies have a common need to implement E-business solutions in order to follow the development from the old traditional economy to the new digital economies. The overall objective is to create a technical and administrative platform by means of best practice for the companies - independently of trade and size, which will enable the participants to define their E-business strategy and choose the best solution, handle the implementation and train employees at all levels in the organisational changes. Synergies emerging should help reduce the complex of problems which companies experience.

OPENXCHANGE
|
Integrated Business Processes and Methods for Electronic Procurement and Marketplaces
Project Summary
The overall openXchange project objective is to build up a framework for the exchange of business objects to enable complete business process integration. A commonly agreed set of business transactions will be defined and a prototype software tool will be developed that converts the proprietary document formats to the standardised transactions.
Since the primary objective is very extensive in scope the following secondary objectives are defined for the openXchange project:
- completeness of document set in terms of functional applicability (purchase order, invoice etc.)
- definition of conversion rules and transformations to other initiatives (e.g. xCBL and BMEcat)
- coverage of both external and internal supply chain
- cross-industry and international applicability
- high acceptance in both large and small and medium-sized companies
In order to ensure the achievement of objectives, the openXchange framework will be supported by the openXchange Component Model. The openXchange Component Model is a modular software architecture that allows highly flexible and scalable deployment.

e-Commerce Legislation and Regulatory Policy Portal
Project Summary
Global eCommerce offers a way for all enterprises, notably innovators, to reach wider markets and grow faster than by using existing methods. To provide a setting for business to work, national governments and the European institutions legislate to protect customers and consumers, enabling safe on-line trading. For eCommerce to thrive the legislative and regulatory state, intended to create trust and confidence in new technologies and business processes, must be known. eCommLex will inform about variation in legislative and regulatory eCommerce matters across the EU for non-specialist entrepreneurs and business people, in particular from SMEs, in a user-friendly manner. This is vital for services and applications called for by the User-friendly Information Society. eCommLex will support eCommerce by comparing relevant regulatory issues across the EU and will help enterprises to get such information which affects business quickly, easily, and at no cost. This information can also help guide legal advisors on specific areas to be addressed.

Digital Europe: e-business and sustainable development
Project Summary
DEESD aims to identify the crucial role that e-commerce and e-work can play in creating an information society that is more user friendly, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable. The project will build a convincing “business case” for the contribution that can be made by e-commerce and e-work to sustainable development, including a policy framework for “sustainable electronic markets” and make further recommendations to the EC, EU member states, local authorities, businesses and NGOs.
The specific objectives of the project are:
To quantify the potential contribution of e-business to dematerialization, resource productivity and transport efficiency
To investigate the relationship between e-business and corporate social responsibility
To assess the impact of e-business on sustainable regional development
The consortium will undertake a state-of-the-art review that will summarise the latest thinking and research about e-business and sustainable development from around the world, and provide an overview of related projects and initiatives. A dedicated public website will be launched as a communication tool for project partners and other stakeholders. A leaflet will also be produced, and circulated to key decision makers in business, government and NGOs, as a way of raising awareness and building interest in the project. The primary research phase of the project will include in-depth interviews with senior managers in companies, desk-based research and policy analysis, and an in-depth survey of corporate attitudes, results and policies relating to e-business and sustainable development. Case studies will be a central component of the research. Eight sectors have been selected to explore in detail under each research themes: financial services, music, food retailing, paper and pulp, auto-manufacturing, books, PCs and second-hand goods. The findings of the research will be disseminated through a summary report, a full report published as a book, and a major European conference.

Co-operative Bidding in the Medical Sector
Project Summary
The main objective of this project is to define and experiment a best practice to support the collaboration among SMEs of the bio-medical sector, up to the constitution of their smart bidding organisation (SBO). The project will last 18 months and the project work is organised in macro-phases: (1) Requirements specification: the end-user requirements are collected, and the problems of the enterprises willing to operate together are studied (Methodological framework, ICT infrastructure, regulations concerning tenders and supplies in the bio-medical sector, financial support procedures for the SBO); (2) ICT tools selection and adaptation: tools selection and tuning on the basis of the tools developed during past European Projects, methodologies definition and formalisation (contractual aspects) for the constitution and operation of the SBO, a Regulation Framework will be defined and published in a Web site; (3) Pilot case preparation: for each business case, a significant objective for the relative pilot case conduction is selected and analysed in detail; (4) Pilot cases experimentation: for verifying the defined and tuned best practices, at the three pilot cases: Italian, Hungarian and French business case; (5) Dissemination and exploitation: the dissemination strategy is defined and applied, both in terms of technologies and methodologies in particular to promote the lesson learnt towards further SMEs of the Biomedical sector and out of it. The catalysts, in collaboration with CNA, organise public events for results dissemination. An Interest Group will be activated since the beginning of the project

Remote Intelligent Management Support and Training
Project Summary
Knowledge is recognised as a firm's most valuable asset. Understanding how to identify, collect, classify and process the knowledge within and between organisations is big business today, primarily for the consulting companies employed by major corporations seeking to capitalise on this most valuable asset. Major hurdles face those organisations embarking on a knowledge management programme. For example, encouraging employees to 'part' with their knowledge; effectively using the acquired knowledge to improve aspects of the organisational processes; measuring and managing the impact of knowledge management. By integrating leading edge and innovative knowledge engineering techniques to support knowledge management, RIMSAT will provide a novel way of using the acquired knowledge to improve organisational procedures. To overcome the first hurdle, the RIMSAT system will be validated in a safety-critical environment where the sharing of knowledge is not only vital but is considered the norm. The third hurdle mentioned will be addressed by the inclusion of a process to measure the impact of knowledge management on the effectiveness of the decisions taken by an organisation in dealing with safety-critical situations.
RIMSAT objectives are:- to develop an innovative, 'learning' knowledge-based decision support system aimed at organisations involved in highly complex, safety and/or mission critical activities and events, irrespective of their location- to elicit both tacit and explicit knowledge, information and data from a variety of formal and informal sources to provide a, best practice, dynamic advice and guidance system available at any fixed or mobile location that has access to any terminal with wired or wireless communication capability;- to ensure that the system will continually 'learn' from previous experiences, enabling the advice & guidance it determines to represent the best practice available at that specific moment in time. - to prove the concept of the system through real-world trials in a highly complex, safety-critical environment;- to use the system as the basis for collaborative distance learning/training through customisable event/incident simulation. Enabling existing skills to be improved and new skills to be acquired without the need to remove personnel from their centre of operations for extended periods of time.
