Lucent Technologies and TeleCommunication Systems, Inc (TCS) offers the Short Message Service Center (SMSC). The SMSC provides basic services such as voice mail and fax mail notification, numeric and alphanumeric paging. It also offers advanced information services via e-mail and Internet access. It supports mobile originated messaging capabilities. Lucent/TCS SMSC supports the delivery of WAP messages based on the WAP V1.1 specification. This includes the capabilities for Teleservice Segmentation and Reassembly (TSAR) and General UDP Transport Service (GUTS). It interfaces with the WAP servers using SMPP v3.4. These capabilities will generally be available in the 1st quarter of 2000.

MapQuest.com, Inc.
MapQuest.com provides information and content that turns a WAP-enabled phone into a travelling concierge. The new MapQuest.com service allows mobile phone users to access a variety of travel and destination information on handsets with a WML V1.1 microbrowser. MapQuest.com users can retrieve driving directions as well as information on local hotels, restaurants and other points of interest while they are on the move. In the near future, MapQuest.com will add more content and features to this service including real-time traffic alerts and incident reporting information.

Melody Interactive Solutions

Melody is currently developing a series of WAP products, marketed under the brand name MyWap. The MyWap Studio client enables you to develop, manage and edit WAP sites and includes a WYSIWYG editor, a WMLScript debugger and an FTP client. The MyWap Mail server application enables the user to receive and send email through any WAP device, even when away from the office. The MyWap News server application transforms any WAP device into a news or messaging tool. The MyWap Teletex Converter server application allows any teletex broadcasting TV station to publish content also for WAP. Platform independent, it works on any existing teletex system.

In July 1999, Motorola unveiled its first WAP-capable, Tri-band GSM phone. Scheduled to be available in 4Q99, the phone supports the WAP V1.1 specification, and enables the Tri-band GSM phone to access email and select Internet-based information services. Motorola is also planning to provide WAP V1.1 support in its i1000plus and Timeport P7389 handset models. Motorola intends to bring WAP technology to the market and progressively roll it out across its entire handset product range in all technologies, including CDMA, GSM and TDMA.
