My copy is watchable, and there’s nothing that completely ruins the viewing experience, but there are definitely much better copies out there. If you have a better copy, I’ll take it.

This is a really good copy, and I have no interest in getting a new one.

Dear God, this is a good match. If you’ve never seen this match, get this tape!
GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

GCW on TBS

KILLER KARL KOX vs. BILL ALLEN

CRUSHER & TOMMY RICH vs. OLE ANDERSON & IVAN KOLOFF The time limit expires after two minutes (?) of action.

BLACKJACK LANZA vs. CURTIS BRAZIL Stan Hansen does commentary with Gordon Solie; unintentionally funny, as this match is taped in the WTBS studio, but they dub in canned heat with at least 20,000 screaming fans.

STAN HANSEN vs. SNAKE BROWN

BOBBY HEENAN CHALLENGES BOB ARMSTRONG to a match vs. a mystery opponent in a judo-jacket match.

CARL FERGIE vs. CHICK DONOVAN

IVAN KOLOFF & OLE ANDERSON in a squash match, with Tommy Rich & Crusher sitting in to do commentary. Crusher is particularly funny here. Rich, Crusher, Anderson and Koloff brawl afterward.

BOB ARMSTRONG vs. DR. JUDO Armstrong squashes Heenan’s henchman.

OLE ANDERSON & ERNIE LADD vs. CHICK DONOVAN & BILL ALLEN

TOMMY RICH & CRUSHER vs. RIP OLIVER & CARL FERGIE Rich & Crusher are now the tag champs.

JOHNNY NICKS vs. RICKY FIELDS

TONY ATLAS vs. JACK FULLER

SGT. JACQUES GOULET & CHRIS MARKOFF v TED ALLEN & MARVIN TURNER

KILLER KARL KOX vs. JERRY ROBERTS Roberts is actually a young Jacques Rougeau. The finish of this match is cut off.

TONY ATLAS vs. BUCK BRANIGAN

RICK FIELDS vs. CARL FERGIE

BRET HART & CHICK DONOVAN vs. JACQUES GOULET & CHRIS MARKOFF One of Bret's earliest U.S. matches; They make no mention of his famous father, and he’s billed as being from Great Falls, Montana. Speaking of B.S., the heels are billed as the “European Tag Team Champions.”

ERNIE LADD & MASKED SUPERSTAR v BOB ARMSTRONG & BUZZ SAWYER Heenan slips a foreign object to Ernie Ladd, and the heels give Armstrong a three-on-one beating.

BRET HART vs. BILL HOWARD

STAN HANSEN vs. LEN OWEN

TERRY GORDY vs. MIKE JACKSON Gordy is subbing for Michael Hayes, who refuses to wrestle, setting up the Freebirds’ split.

JUNKYARD DOG & TED DIBIASE vs. FABULOUS FREEBIRDS (ROBERTS & GORDY) JYD & DiBiase surprise the Freebirds by buying the contract from the jobbers the Freebirds were supposed to face.

NWA WORLD TITLE: HARLEY RACE vs. DUSTY RHODES from the Omni. The Dre-uhm, looking almost fit here, wins the World Title.

TOMMY RICH vs. KEN PATERA JIP from the Omni.

BLACKJACK MULLIGAN vs. BRUISER BRODY 8mm clips from the Omni.

MICHAEL HAYES cuts a PHENOMENAL promo explaining his face turn.

TERRY GORDY & JIMMY “Superfly” SNUKA vs. TED DIBIASE & STEVE O

TERRY GORDY & JIMMY SNUKA announce that the NWA board of directors has reversed their tag team title loss to Tommy Rich & Ted DiBiase. I’m guessing this is a cover for Ted DiBiase leaving the promotion. Michael Hayes walks out shortly after and Terry Gordy surprises him by smashing a silver cup Hayes gave him when his son was born.

MICHAEL HAYES vs. EL TORO Gordy offers Toro (“who wrestled Bruno Sammartino to a one-hour draw at MSG” according to Gordy) $1,000 to injure Hayes. This leads to Gordy & Snuka giving Hayes a 2-on-1 beating.

KEVIN VON ERICH vs. JIMMY “Superfly” SNUKA Gordy interferes until Michael Hayes makes the save.

MICHAEL HAYES & ANDRÉ THE GIANT vs. TERRY GORDY & JIMMY “Superfly” SNUKA 8mm footage from the Omni.

MICHAEL HAYES IN A SQUASH MATCH A masked henchman attacks Hayes, who makes a comeback and unmasks the henchman as Austin Idol; Idol & Terry Gordy then give Hayes a 2-on-1 beating.

MASKED SUPERSTAR & SUPER DESTROYER vs. VALENTINO & RUSSELL Even Gordon Solie doesn’t seem to know who the jobbers are; Big Red & Leroy Brown brawl with the heels post-match.

TOMMY RICH vs. IRON MIKE SHARPE

MASKED SUPERSTAR CHALLENGES LEROY BROWN This ends with about 8 men in the ring.

MASKED SUPERSTAR vs. VALENTINO

RODDY PIPER & BOB ARMSTRONG have a series of confrontations.

RODDY PIPER & GARY HART STRIKE A DEAL allowing Piper to manage Kabuki.

TOMMY RICH vs. RICK STARR Buzz Sawyer insists that Rich wrestle him instead, and Rich accepts. Ric Flair does commentary for this match.

KENDO STICK CHALLENGE Gary Hart and Roddy Piper offer $200 to anyone who can hit Kabuki with the Kendo stick without Kabuki blocking it. Kabuki loses and goes nuts!

GEORGE “THE ANIMAL” STEELE DEBUTS attacking Kevin Sullivan, Ole Anderson, and Roddy Piper.

BAD, BAD LEROY BROWN vs. RICK HARRIS

ROWDY RODDY PIPER & OLE ANDERSON vs. TWO JOBBERS The heels brawl with Tommy Rich & George Steele post-match.

MICHAEL HAYES vs. BILL WHITE

RIC FLAIR CHALLENGES LEORY BROWN TO AN ARM WRESTLING MATCH Brown accepts; then, just as it appears Flair is about to lose, he…loses and calmly walks away. Man, didn’t see that coming.

BUZZ SAWYER vs. KEVIN SULLIVAN

RIC FLAIR CHALLENGES LEORY BROWN TO ANOTHER ARM WRESTLING MATCH and loses again.

BOB ARMSTRONG & KEVIN SULLIVAN vs. BIG JOHN STUDD & SUPER DESTROYER

RIC FLAIR CHALLENGES LEORY BROWN TO YET ANOTHER ARM WRESTLING MATCH and offers him a new suit as an incentive. Ric loses again!

MICHAEL HAYES & A SURPRISE PARTNER vs. OLE ANDERSON & SUPER DESTROYER Hayes’ schedule partner, Kevin Sullivan, no-shows, and in a “Holy crap!” moment, he reveals a substitution…Terry Gordy! The Freebirds are back together! Post-match, Gordy explains why they got back together.

PAUL ORNDORFF vs. BUZZ SAWYER

MR. WRESTLING II vs. BUZZ SAWYER Masked Superstar destroys Wrestling’s robe during the match.

Dr. Death” STEVE WILLIAMS vs. TOM MENESTO, JR. Interesting “funny-how-things-work-out” moment: Since it’s Dr. Death, Bill Watts veers into a rant about college football, talking about how Oklahoma could use a heavyweight player like Steve Williams. Bill then mentions some of the heavyweights in other colleges, including a youngster from Canada playing for Louisiana State named John Tenta.

MARTY LUNDE vs. DICK MURDOCK Marty Lunde?…Yes, that’s none other than Arn Anderson, a relative newcomer still going by his real name!

KAMALA vs. ART CREWS

GREAT KABUKI vs. TIM HORNER

TED DIBIASE & MATT BORNE vs. DAVID SAMMARTINO & BUDDY LANDELL David is billed as Bruno Sammartino, Jr. Bill Watts speaks of him as if he’s a legend in the making and the future of professional wrestling, but the initials on his boots say it all: “BS.”

MISTER WRESTLING II vs. GINO HERNANDEZ

KEVIN VON ERICH vs. MIKE BOND

IRON MIKE SHARPE vs. YOSHI YATSU Iron Mike is a face here, which is just, well, unsettling to me.

MISTER WRESTLING II vs. HIRO MATSUDA

HACKSAW JIM DUGGAN vs. DAVID SAMMARTINO

GORGEOUS GINO HERNANDEZ vs. CHAVO GUERRERO

BUZZ SAWYER vs. JOHNNY RICH

KING KONG BUNDY vs. ART CREWS

CRUSHER DARSOW vs. GEORGE WEINGROFF Weingroff is legally blind, but manages to hold his own and shows a lot more ability than I would expect from someone in that predicament. Good for him.

RICK ROOD vs. RIP ROGERS Ravishing Rick is a babyface rookie, still using the real spelling of his last name.

JUNKYARD DOG vs. KING KONG BUNDY JYD slams Bundy, but Buzz Sawyer and Missing Link run in for a three-on-one attack.

ROAD WARRIORS vs. RICK ROOD & ART CREWS

MISSING LINK vs. RIP ROGERS

BUZZ SAWYER vs. TIM HORNER

BARBARIAN vs. SHAWN MICHAELS The future WWF World Champion gets no offense and gets destroyed in a two-minute squash.

KAMALA vs. ICEMAN KING PARSONS Hercules Hernandez attacks Parsons, and Butch Reed makes the save, slamming Kamala from the top rope. Kamala freaks at this show of strength and runs away!

DIRTY WHITE BOYS vs. DAVE BOWMAN & MIKE JACKSON

KERRY VON ERICH vs. BUDDY LANDELL

JAKE ROBERTS vs. TERRY TAYLOR Jake DDTs Taylor on top of a chair, and Terry is legit split open!

THOR vs. BRICKHOUSE BROWN You might know Thor better as Nailz, Vince McMahon’s favorite wrestler.

BARBARIAN vs. RICHARD DYE

KOKO WARE & MIKE JACKSON vs. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS The Midnights’ Mid-South debut.

SOME DAYS ARE DIAMONDS” music video featuring Terry Taylor. Man, two videos…what a push. This one’s a little, well, manlier than the last one.

JIM NEIDHART & BUTCH REED vs. ICEMAN KING PARSONS & LEAPING LANNY POFFO Weird alternate universe moment; it’s 1984 and the commentary team is Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler, but it must be a different Jerry Lawler because this one puts over the wrestlers and makes pertinent observations during the match. :-P

NIKOLAI VOLKOFF vs. JOHNNY RICH

ONE MAN GANG vs. RON ELLIS

MAGNUM TA & “Hacksaw” JIM DUGGAN vs. THE MISSING LINK & KING KONG BUNDY

JUNKYARD DOG vs. KRUSHER DARSOW

BUTCH REED vs. GEROGE WEINGROFF

JIM NEIDHART vs. ART CREWS

Awesome tape! It’s becoming clearer to me why so many fans who have been around longer to me regard Mid-South as the best wrestling promotion of all-time. The strange thing is I can’t really put my finger on why. It’s just that the booking for everything here seems so, well, perfect, somehow.

DOG COLLAR MATCH: HACKSAW JIM DUGGAN vs. BUZZ SAWYER

STEEL CAGE MATCH: JAKE “The Snake” ROBERTS vs. HUMONGOUS As a means of psyching out Humongous, Jake is wearing the same type of mask. The play-by-play man tells us, “The name Humongous fits him, even though I am not quite sure what it means.”

BUNKHOUSE BATTLE ROYAL with “Dr. Death” Steve Williams, Dick Slater, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Buzz Sawyer, Nightmare, Dick Murdoch, Al Perez, Ricky Gibson, Superstar, Steve Keirn, Ted DiBiase, Terry Taylor, Fabulous Ones, Chavo Guerrero, “Hot Sutff” Eddie Gilbert, and Rob Ricksteiner.

NORTH AMERICAN TITLE: DICK SLATER vs. JAKE “The Snake” ROBERTS Ends with an absolutely insulting Dusty Finish.

KAMALA vs. DAVE PETERSON Strange that a “best of” collection would start with a squash.

RICK STEINER vs. CHAVO GUERERRO Buzz Sawyer interferes for Rick.

BLADE RUNNERS vs. TED DIBIASE & STEVE WILLIAMS Blade Runners are future superstars Sting and Ultimate Warrior, managed by Eddie Gilbert. I started watching wrestling at the beginning of 1989, so this was an absolutely awesome match to see when I first got this tape.

HACKSAW JIM DUGGAN vs. CORCHINIKA

TERRY TAYLOR vs. BUTCH REED Match is joined in progress, but well over 15 minutes airs. Nikolai Volkoff and Krusher Kruschev run in and DESTROY Taylor.

BRETT SAWYER vs. GESTAPO MENDOZA

TERRY TAYLOR & FANTASTICS vs. JACK VICTORY & SHEEPHERDERS

TED DIBIASE vs. MAGNUM T.A. Sorry about my wrestling history ignorance. This is obviously a title match of some kind, but there’s no play-by-play and the ring announcer’s intro isn’t shown, so I don’t know much beyond that.

DOG COLLAR MATCH: “Rowdy” RODDY PIPER vs. GREG “The Hammer” VALENTINE It hurts to watch this match, and I mean that in a good way. Greg and Roddy come up with some VERY creative ways to use the chain during this very bloody match.

TAG TEAM TITLE: BRISCO BROTHERS vs. RICKY STEAMBOAT & JAY YOUNGBLOOD Great match!

WORLD TITLE STEEL CAGE: HARLEY RACE vs. RIC FLAIR with guest referee Gene Kiniski, who damn near ruins the match by being an incredible nuisance throughout, and slightly botching the finish. That aside, this is a great match and a great main event. You’d never know the NWA was going to be running in second by the end of the following year.

TV TITLE: TULLY BLANCHARD vs. RICKY STEAMBOAT Great match between two men who were right on the verge of becoming superstars at this point.

$1,000,000 & WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. DUSTY RHODES with guest referee Joe Frazier, who stops the match for blood after 12 minutes of an absolutely terrible main event. I’d expect much better from the promotion that was building its reputation from straight wrestling.

UNITED STATES TITLE STEEL CAGE “I QUIT” MATCH: TULLY BLANCHARD vs. MAGNUM T.A. And on this night, hardcore wrestling was born. The thing that blows my mind is that this match is over 16 years old, and it could be a Wrestlemania main event, which should tell you what kind of standards these two men set. Magnum T.A. is easily the biggest “What if…?” story in wrestling history.

TAG TEAM TITLE STEEL CAGE: ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. IVAN & NIKITA KOLOFF

SKYWALKER” MATCH: ROAD WARRIORS vs. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS Hey, if we come up with a really cool name for a scaffold match, maybe no one will notice how much it sucks!…Trust me, we still noticed.

TAG TEAM TITLE STEEL CAGE: ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. OLE & ARN ANDERSON “Playing Ricky Morton” is defined in this match.

UNITED STATES TITLE STEEL CAGE: LEX LUGER vs. DUSTY RHODES OK match with a hilarious blown spot where Luger struggles and gives up trying to apply the torture rack on Rhodes, and the play-by-play men have to come up with a diplomatic way of saying Dusty is too fat.

WORLD TITLE STEEL CAGE: RON GARVIN vs. RIC FLAIR Garvin’s best match. You thought ECW invented cynical wrestling fans, but here we are in 1987 listening to a very loud and decisive “Garvin sucks” chant.

WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. DUSTY RHODES Dusty wins the NWA title, only to be stripped of it a week later in an extended Dusty finish. The fans were basically being trained not to believe anything they saw until a few weeks passed and it was determined that everything was okay.

NWA TAG TEAM TITLE: ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. RISING SUNS

MAGNUM TA cuts a promo---not sure where this came from, but we see a botched “take one” before the actual promo. Anyway, while hyping a match in Philadelphia, Ole & Arn Anderson run in to attack; this leads to the actual show that night, where Rhodes, not knowing where his partner is, takes a 2-on-1 beating.

NO DQ: DUSTY RHODES vs. BOBBY EATON Ending is just barely cut off; you can tell exactly how the match ends from what is shown.

STING vs. BOB EMERY From NWA’s “Ric Flair Night.” Sting squashes Emery, then challenges Flair to a match. VERY FUNNY stuff follows, as J.J. Dillon comes to the ring and tells Sting that it’s Flair’s night of glory, and Sting should just leave him alone…and Sting is totally speechless because J.J. is absolutely right! J.J. realizes that he’s unintentionally made Sting look like an ass, so after a few moments of awkward silence, he throws champagne in Sting’s face so Sting will have an excuse to beat the crap out of him, bringing the Horsemen to the ring.

BENCH PRESS CONTEST: ROAD WARRIORS vs. POWERS OF PAIN Just like any other test of strength, the heels attack just as the faces are on the verge of winning. Animal suffers a legit eye injury during this angle, and there’s a really scary moment as a 700-pound dumbbell just barely misses Hawk’s head.
