It’s becoming clearer to me why so many fans who have been around longer to me regard Mid-South as the best wrestling promotion of all-time. The strange thing is I can’t really put my finger on why. It’s just that the booking for everything here seems so, well, perfect, somehow. The play-by-play man tells us, “The name Humongous fits him, even though I am not quite sure what it means.” BUNKHOUSE BATTLE ROYAL with “Dr. Death” Steve Williams, Dick Slater, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Buzz Sawyer, Nightmare, Dick Murdoch, Al Perez, Ricky Gibson, Superstar, Steve Keirn, Ted DiBiase, Terry Taylor, Fabulous Ones, Chavo Guerrero, “Hot Sutff” Eddie Gilbert, and Rob Ricksteiner. BLADE RUNNERS vs. TED DIBIASE & STEVE WILLIAMS Blade Runners are future superstars Sting and Ultimate Warrior, managed by Eddie Gilbert. I started watching wrestling at the beginning of 1989, so this was an absolutely awesome match to see when I first got this tape. HACKSAW JIM DUGGAN vs. CORCHINIKA TERRY TAYLOR vs. BUTCH REED Match is joined in progress, but well over 15 minutes airs. Nikolai Volkoff and Krusher Kruschev run in and DESTROY Taylor. BRETT SAWYER vs. GESTAPO MENDOZA TERRY TAYLOR & FANTASTICS vs. JACK VICTORY & SHEEPHERDERS TED DIBIASE vs. MAGNUM T.A. Sorry about my wrestling history ignorance. This is obviously a title match of some kind, but there’s no play-by-play and the ring announcer’s intro isn’t shown, so I don’t know much beyond that. TWO HOURS NATIONAL WRESTLING ALLIANCE BEST OF STARRCADE 1983-1987 DOG COLLAR MATCH: “Rowdy” RODDY PIPER vs. GREG “The Hammer” VALENTINE It hurts to watch this match, and I mean that in a good way. Greg and Roddy come up with some VERY creative ways to use the chain during this very bloody match. TAG TEAM TITLE: BRISCO BROTHERS vs. RICKY STEAMBOAT & JAY YOUNGBLOOD Great match! WORLD TITLE STEEL CAGE: HARLEY RACE vs. RIC FLAIR with guest referee Gene Kiniski, who damn near ruins the match by being an incredible nuisance throughout, and slightly botching the finish. That aside, this is a great match and a great main event. You’d never know the NWA was going to be running in second by the end of the following year. TV TITLE: TULLY BLANCHARD vs. RICKY STEAMBOAT Great match between two men who were right on the verge of becoming superstars at this point. $1,000,000 & WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. DUSTY RHODES with guest referee Joe Frazier, who stops the match for blood after 12 minutes of an absolutely terrible main event. I’d expect much better from the promotion that was building its reputation from straight wrestling. UNITED STATES TITLE STEEL CAGE “I QUIT” MATCH: TULLY BLANCHARD vs. MAGNUM T.A. And on this night, hardcore wrestling was born. The thing that blows my mind is that this match is over 16 years old, and it could be a Wrestlemania main event, which should tell you what kind of standards these two men set. Magnum T.A. is easily the biggest “What if…?” story in wrestling history. TAG TEAM TITLE STEEL CAGE: ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. IVAN & NIKITA KOLOFF “SKYWALKER” MATCH: ROAD WARRIORS vs. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS Hey, if we come up with a really cool name for a scaffold match, maybe no one will notice how much it sucks!…Trust me, we still noticed. TAG TEAM TITLE STEEL CAGE: ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. OLE & ARN ANDERSON “Playing Ricky Morton” is defined in this match. UNITED STATES TITLE STEEL CAGE: LEX LUGER vs. DUSTY RHODES OK match with a hilarious blown spot where Luger struggles and gives up trying to apply the torture rack on Rhodes, and the play-by-play men have to come up with a diplomatic way of saying Dusty is too fat. WORLD TITLE STEEL CAGE: RON GARVIN vs. RIC FLAIR Garvin’s best match. You thought ECW invented cynical wrestling fans, but here we are in 1987 listening to a very loud and decisive “Garvin sucks” chant. WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. DUSTY RHODES Dusty wins the NWA title, only to be stripped of it a week later in an extended Dusty finish. The fans were basically being trained not to believe anything they saw until a few weeks passed and it was determined that everything was okay. FOUR HOURS NWA BEST OF 1985 NWA TAG TEAM TITLE: TERRY TAYLOR & BUZZ SAWYER vs. MINNESOTA WRECKING CREW NWA TAG TEAM TITLE: ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. IVAN & NIKITA KOLOFF BUZZ & BRETT SAWYER vs. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS COWBOY RON BASS vs. BLACK BART MAGNUM TA vs. RIC FLAIR Magnum makes a $1,000 bet that Flair can’t beat him in ten minutes. ROAD WARRIORS vs. JAY YOUNGBLOOD & PEZ WHATLEY The Warriors tie up Youngblood and cover him with paint until King Kong Bundy(!) makes the save. NWA TAG TEAM TITLE: ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. RISING SUNS MAGNUM TA cuts a promo---not sure where this came from, but we see a botched “take one” before the actual promo. Anyway, while hyping a match in Philadelphia, Ole & Arn Anderson run in to attack; this leads to the actual show that night, where Rhodes, not knowing where his partner is, takes a 2-on-1 beating. DILLON Dusty’s best idea ever, it’s 20+ minutes of non-stop action in a double cage, and enough heat to set the video on fire. ***** WESTERN STATES HERITAGE TITLE: BARRY WINDHAM vs. RICK STEINER STEEL CAGE UNITED STATES TITLE: NIKITA KOLOFF vs. LEX LUGER Lex wins the US Belt. TEXAS DEATH MATCH: “DR. DEATH” STEVE WILLIAMS vs. “CAPTAIN REDNECK” DICK MURDOCK An emotional scene, as Magnum TA, making a surprise appearance after his freak accident, stands in Doc’s corner. FABULOUS FREEBIRDS vs. IVAN KOLOFF, PAUL JONES, MANNY FERNANDEZ $100,000 BARBED WIRE LADDER MATCH: DUSTY RHODES vs. TULLY BLANCHARD Sounds like a great, extreme gimmick match, but War Games was earlier on the tape so Dusty has used up his allotted one good idea for the year. This sucks. WORLD TITLE: RIC FLAIR vs. GORGEOUS JIMMY GARVIN Jimmy submits, and Flair attacks Precious. Ron Garvin runs in and lays out Ric with the Hands of Stone, setting up their feud. TAG TEAM TITLE: ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS Match 397 of the “Best of 513 Series.” WAR GAMES: DUSTY RHODES, NIKITA KOLOFF, ROAD WARRIORS, & PAUL ELLERING vs. RIC FLAIR, ARN ANDERSON, TULLY BLANCHARD, LEX LUGER, & WAR MACHINE War Machine is Big Bubba Rogers under a mask, replacing J.J., who was injured in the previous match. Dillon comes to the ring and tells Sting that it’s Flair’s night of glory, and Sting should just leave him alone…and Sting is totally speechless because J.J. is absolutely right! J.J. realizes that he’s unintentionally made Sting look like an ass, so after a few moments of awkward silence, he throws champagne in Sting’s face so Sting will have an excuse to beat the crap out of him, bringing the Horsemen to the ring. BENCH PRESS CONTEST: ROAD WARRIORS vs. POWERS OF PAIN Just like any other test of strength, the heels attack just as the faces are on the verge of winning. Animal suffers a legit eye injury during this angle, and there’s a really scary moment as a 700-pound dumbbell just barely misses Hawk’s head.
