Nathalie Preston Bennett, of Sanford, a longtime educator. Mrs. Bennett was a graduate of Farmington Normal School and began her teaching career in 1932 in Madison and at Sanford High School from 1934 to 1940. In 1940, she married George Roger Bennett and became a homemaker. In 1954 she returned to teaching at Kennebunk High School and then at Sanford Schools until 1976. Mrs. Bennett received a Master of Science in Education degree in 1971. She was a member of the North Parish Congregational Church and taught Sunday school and participated in Girl Scouts. She was a member of numerous professional educational organizations. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 860)

Joseph Myers Koch III, of Cumberland Foreside. Mr. Koch was a devoted husband and father who cherished his family and home. He began his career at Boeing Corporation in Seattle and later became vice president of finance at Cianbro Corporation. He joined Dragon Cement Company in 1985 and served as the company's chief financial officer before being named president in 1993. He served on the board of the Maine State Chamber beginning in 1995 and served as its chair in 2001. He was also a board member of the Pine Tree Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Portland Cement Association and the Northeast Cement Shippers Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Susan, and their 2 children. We acknowledge his dedicated service to the business community and his profession. John Turner on the occasion of his retirement after 10 years as Superintendent for the Peru School District. Under the direction of Mr. Turner, the district has seen numerous improvements. Ken and Polly Bartow, owners of Bartow Construction located in Otisfield, on the celebration of their 25 years in business. Ken and Polly founded their construction business in 1979. They began by offering remodeling services and in 1984 built their first home. They have continued remodeling and building quality homes along with offering exceptional customer service in the Oxford Hills and Western Maine area. the members of the rock band O.R.B.I.T.S. from Maranacook Community School in Readfield, who won the statewide Reindeer Rock-Off on Sunday, May 15, 2005. The band competed over the last several months with 19 of the most promising young rock groups in Maine. The members of O.R.B.I.T.S. are: Willy Herman, bass and back-up vocalist; Peter Herman, lead guitarist; John Mrazik, percussionist; Dean Grondin, rhythm guitarist; and Sam Watson, lead vocalist. The band was awarded $1,000 in prize money and 15 hours of free recording time in Portland and was designated "The Best Young Rock Band in Maine." Godfrey Lake, of South Portland, winner of the Key Bank Student Award at the Southern Maine Community College 2nd Annual Entrepreneurial Awards Dinner. Godfrey is pursuing an industrial electrical degree from Southern Maine Community College and plans to graduate in 2006. A licensed electrician, he has worked in the electrical field since 1999 and he founded Lake Electric, an electrical contracting, construction and maintenance business in South Portland. He recently incorporated his business, which specializes in older home electrical service and repair, electrical assessment and consultation; code standardization; and appliance, cable and telephone installation and repair. In 2001, he entered Southern Maine Technical College and began to pursue his industrial electrical degree. He completed the "FastTrac" New Venture Program at Southern Maine Community College. George Taylor, of Fairfield, on his 50th consecutive year as a coach of youth baseball. Throughout this time, he has been an outstanding role model, displaying dedication and the ultimate in sportsmanship and respect for his players and officials and opponents. Zachary Hynes, of Yarmouth, who is the recipient of a Diplomacy Award. The award was given at the 2005 Maine Model United Nations Conference at the University of Southern Maine. The conference was held May 17 to 19 and involved more than 300 students from high schools throughout New England in a simulation of the activities and deliberations of the United Nations. The award is the highest individual honor granted at the conference and is given to a delegate in each United Nations committee who best embodies excellence in research, written composition, knowledge of procedures, conflict resolution, negotiation skills and speech making. Zachary received the award for his exemplary work as the delegate representing Bolivia in the Organization of American States. We extend our congratulations to Zachary on this achievement; (HLS 871)

The Best Delegation Award is presented to the country team whose delegates best embody excellence in research, written composition, knowledge of procedures, conflict resolution, negotiation skills and speech making. These Gorham High School students received this award for their exemplary work as delegates representing the United States. Doris Bryant Makas, of Lewiston, on the occasion of her 95th birthday, June 5, 2005. Deirdre M. Mageean, of Orono, for her 18 years of dedicated and honorable service to the University of Maine as a researcher, professor and administrator. Dr. Mageean has served as Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, Associate Professor in the Department of Resource Economics and Policy, Director of the Margaret Chase Smith Center for Public Policy and Associate Vice-president for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. She has served on numerous Ph.D. and master's degree committees within several departments, including Economics, History, Resource Economics and Policy, Spatial Information Science and Engineering, the School of Marine Sciences and the School of Wildlife Ecology. Dr. Mageean's well-respected research and published works include many books and articles on social, environmental and public policy in Maine and around the world. Her advocacy on behalf of sound policy making and the University of Maine is greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten; (HLS 877)

Hermon Elementary School students for their outstanding efforts in raising $12,000 for the American Heart Association. The pupils of Hermon Elementary School have participated for the past 16 years in the Jump Rope for Heart annual event sponsored by the American Heart Association and endorsed by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Led by their physical education teacher Deb Aucoin, 260 students took part in the event this year, spending their day jumping rope. We congratulate the students and staff of Hermon Elementary School on their success in raising nearly $100,000 for the association through the years and their commitment in supporting this excellent cause; (HLS 878)

meteorologist Dave Santoro, of Gorham, on the occasion of his retirement after 15 years of forecasting Maine's marvelous weather, to undertake the high calling and new career as a teacher in the Portland Public School System. A native of Morris, Connecticut, he began his boyhood weather career as an observer for meteorologist Paul Cousins, later his adult colleague at WGME-TV. He received his meteorology degree from Lyndon State College and joined WGME-TV in December, 1989, a winter of record-setting cold, as he fondly recalls. He debuted as the first "Daybreak Meteorologist," and designed the pioneering "Dave's Weather Digest," first as a printed almanac and now on the World Wide Web. From the era of the teletype to the Internet, he has cheerfully forecast Maine's changeable, formidable weather with charm, grace and expertise. We salute him as he embarks on his new career as a 5th-grade math teacher for students of the 21st century, seeding refreshing rains and sunny skies in the hearts of young people in Portland, Longfellow's beloved city "that is seated by the Sea"; (HLS 879)

Specialist Richard King, of South Portland, who has returned home after 13 months of active duty with the 1-152nd Field Artillery Forward Division stationed in Iraq. Samuel J. Jackson, of South Portland, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. Sam is a member of Troop #23 in South Portland and is the son of Paul and Gael Jackson. the Honorable Daniel B. Williams, of Orono, former member of the Maine House of Representatives and longtime and enthusiastic supporter of music and arts at the University of Maine, who is the 2005 recipient of the annual Vincent A. Hartgen Award by the University of Maine Patrons of the Arts for advancing the community of the arts on campus. An original advisory board member of the Maine Center for the Arts, he co-chairs the center's Gala Committee and serves on other center committees. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association and has performed in several productions of the School of Performing Arts, where he has served as music director. Mr. Williams is the founder and music director of the University of Maine Black Bear Men's Chorus. He also directs "The Landlords," a men's glee club, which performs regularly for area civic groups and community organizations. Each year, Mr. Williams co-writes and co-directs a show performed by University students at the Stillwater Society Dinner, which, through song, recognizes and honors up to 4 prominent University of Maine alumni. He has been a valuable asset to the university arts community and the Maine Center for the Arts for almost a decade. Holger and Patricia Pulkkinen, of South Paris, on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary, May 1, 2005. Mr. and Mrs. Pulkkinen were married in Norway. They settled on Hooper Ledge Road in Paris with their family, where they continue to share their retired years together. Paul Curtis, of Rockland, who is the recipient of a National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is given each year to the top 10 senior football scholar-athletes in the State. Paul plays football and is among the State's finest track and field athletes; he competes in both indoor and outdoor track at Rockland District High School. Academically he ranks 12th in his graduating class and scored 1200 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. He was chosen for the All-Conference Team 2 years in a row. Ellen Ross, of Scarborough, on the occasion of her retirement as coach of the Scarborough High School Academic Decathlon Team. In her final year as decathlon coach, Ms. Ross did what she has done 15 times before: win the State Championship and put the team into national competition. Her teams have won 16 titles over the years and we acknowledge her exemplary skills as a coach and a mentor to her students. the 7 sons of Alice and Alfred Payeur, of Springvale, who joined the United States military during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. They served honorably, ranging in years from 1941 to 1968. Clement, Robert, Conrad, Raymond, Albert, Donald and Larry Payeur gave a total of 47 years to the United States Army and the United States Navy for the future and security of their country. The Sanford News dedicated its 2001 Veterans' Day issue to these brave men, reviewing the military history of each man.
