Report Minutes were sent out from Myrtle Beach meeting.
Request/report Reporting issues — We need a more accurate count of our membership and activities. We are now creating a tool to allow us to identify junior youth, senior youth, and young adults. We are currently basing our plans on guesswork. This information allows NAD executive offices to consider the needs and potentials of youth ministries in their long term planning.
Pastor Cortez requests that we make this an official statistical report that goes through the church clerk on a monthly basis.
You can access the NAD reporting page at http://www.adventistyouthministries.org/reporting.html
Pastor Muganda would like to see the paper form include a space for number of Pathfinder Clubs and Adventurer Clubs.
NAD is looking for contact information with the lay leaders of the conference. Pathfinders and Adventurers have them. Local conferences are encouraged to appoint senior youth and young adult coordinators. You will have to appoint them, because most of these ministries at conference level do not any structure.
This data is not passed to anyone but conference and union offices. We want cell numbers so that we can use “One Call” services to pass information. Check their site at https://www.onecallnow.com/
2010.1 Voted YEC Minutes — To approve the minutes from the January 16, 2009 NAD Youth Committee that was held in Myrtle Beach, SC.
2010.2 Voted Other Minutes — The membership of the NAD Youth Executive Committee will receive minutes from all other NAD Youth Department committees.
Report NADYM Coordinators — There are 27 ministries overseen by NADYM for 9 unions and 58 conferences.
Due to this the NADYM has appointed coordinators to assist in various ministry areas: Allan Martin, Young Adult Coordinator; Bill Wood, Camp Coordinator; Ron Pickell, Public School/ACF Coordinator; Brad and Lisa Gary, Adventurer Coordinators; Glen Milam, Pathfinder Coordinator; Mike Stevenson, Senior Youth; Wendy Eberhart, AACP.
Report World youth ministry — 17 million baptized members, 75-80% are under 30. We have 7 million + Pathfinders; 2 million + Adventurers. Youth Accent magazine is the official voice of GC youth.
Elijah project provides funding for youth evangelism. Over 200,000 baptisms from this program. This year about $10,000 is available to NAD. NAD then has matching funds available. The conference makes a request to James, who passes it on to the GC. The current definition is traditional evangelism.
July 8-20, 2013 will be a world youth event in Cape Town, Africa. We would like to see 1000 youth come from NAD. The first week will be service projects, the second a revival.
Report Blessings in Youth Ministries — A new initiative to find out why those who stay, stay. We need to praise the Lord for those who have stayed home!
Report Unique challenges —
• White flight from youth ministry. The local churches are not supporting youth ministry. The issue also applies to third of fourth generation immigrants. The growth is in first generational immigrants.
• Generational cues and changes that we miss, perhaps until it is too late. We need to capture and use that information.
• We have the components of education, leadership, but we may need a radical change in how we minister.
• We have to make it “My event!” It has to be personal, and then it becomes a passion.
• Addressing issues of homosexuality.
• Adventist Frontier Missions has chosen to look at what makes a culture or subculture ticks.
• We need to answer questions that are not being asked, and we ignore the questions that are being asked.
• We need to include those who have left the church, but are looking for a reason to come back.
Report Leadership Instability — There is this notion that anything creative or new is automatically of the world. People have the right to believe that if they want, but when it becomes a movement, then it becomes problematic. We need to begin to formulate a statement that makes clear what youth ministry is all about in NAD.
There was a music statement on the JCI2 website that helped people understand what the music was going to be like, and what it was about. Stating it upfront, seemed to diminish the number of complaints dramatically. We need to do something similar for the wider ministry. We need to educate the wider church concerning our purpose.
Report Young Adult Ministries — There are four quadrents of the ministry: Leadership development, Missions, Resourcing/Networking, Discipleship. (See attached report.)
Impact Atlanta will take place June 23-July 3, 2010. (See attached report.)
We wish there was more representation at the GC Session by young adults. You have to work through the local union to see much more increase here.
Mission Lifeguard — This program is headed up by Steve Case. It’s purpose it to provide intervention for an individual who is in danger of dropping out of church. http://missionlifeguard.ning.com/
CLYP — Certified Lay Youth Pastor program is designed to provide a trained “youth pastor” in the churches that do not have paid youth pastors. There are only about 200 churches in NAD with youth pastors. No one can get into the program without the endorsement of a local pastor. It does not have to be their pastor, but a pastor who will be their mentor.
ReCharge — will be held this year in Hartford CT, Walla Walla WA, Toronto ONT, Keene TX. Contact Manny Cruz if you are interested in teaming with NAD on these training events.
ACF — www.acfcf.org to see the latest. Adventist Youth Transition Network is our attempt to connect to new students who are moving away from home to go to school.
Report JCI
JCI2 debriefing information will be sent to committee members.
Currently planning for 2012 in Ohio, however the location is not yet confirmed. The event will also include YPAC training.
Statement I want to thank each of you for being present and being part of a process over the last five years. We look forward to doing things a little differently in the next five. Each of you is being pulled in too many directions. In this division there are a lot of independent organizations who are doing great ministry for the church, but they are watering down the structure of the organization. I do not want to walk down this road without your help. We need to do this Jesus’s way. I am appealing to you to help me keep this organization going. In future this committee will be more responsible. Please support us as we support you.
Report AU resolutions on dealing with GYC
Bill Wood shared a document recently approved by AU ADCOM.
The issue with NADYM and GYC is not the president, and not the student attendees, the problem is the self supporting schools etc. that support them and serve on the board and their own agenda.
We need to fill the gaps in our own programming. We need to work together.
Consensus: Assignments will be sent out via e-mail by May 26 with a regular teleconference on September 7, 2:00 pm EST.
