Tech Talk Drive - January to March 2014 – Pune

by Abhijeet Kulkarni, Automation Club, TCTS, Pune

The Tech Talk drive was re-started in Pune GDC from the month of January 2014. With a particular framework the tech talk was launched on 31st January 2014.

Date: - 31st January 2014

Topic: - Introduction to GPON Technology

Speaker: - Sundeep Jain is working with TCTSL for more than 3 years, and has versatile knowledge in IP provisioning and Broadband Technology.

Program Objective

  • Overview of Optical Access Network

  • Basic Concepts of PON (Passive Optical Nework)

  • GPON(Gigabit Passive Optical Network) key Technologies

GPON Technology:-

The way people use the Internet today creates a great demand for very high bandwidth: Telecommuting, IPTV/VOD(Internet Protocol Television/Video on Demand) and Online Gaming are some of the most popular services that generates a need for capacity. One way of providing fiber to the home is through a Gigabit Passive Optical Network, or GPON. GPON is a point-to-multipoint access mechanism. Its main characteristic is the use of passive splitters in the fiber distribution network, enabling one single feeding fiber from the provider's central Office to serve multiple homes and small businesses.

PON – Variants:-

A-PON: ATM PON- First PON standard. Used primarily for business applications. (Up and Down stream rates155 Mbps)

B-PON: Broadband PON- Expanded version of APON, supporting WDM(wavelength division multiplexing) survivability, dynamic upstream bandwidth allocation, higher upstream rates. (Up-622 Mbps(Megabits per second) / 155 Mbps-Down)

GE-PON: Gigabit Ethernet PON- Uses Ethernet transmission Protocol -1.25Gpbs up/downlink.

G-PON: Gigabit PON -Evolution of BPON to higher rates, Uses GEM(Generic Equipment model) protocol with rates supporting 1.25Gbps- Up and 2.5 Gbps Down. Choices of L2 support (Ethernet or ATM) and enhanced security (MD5).

• **10-G PON: XG-PON – Next generation standard following on from GPON. Uses different wavelengths from GPON with rates 2.5Gbps up and 10Gbps down.
