School of Hospitality

Undergraduate Student
more variety of classes, more hands on knowledge instead of textbook fluff
Being only a sophomore, I have yet to take any classes that apply to my major. This is why so many of my responses are 'not applicable'. I also feel that the availability of my advisor is extremely limited. I find that having to make an appointment over a month in advance is unacceptable. I realize that they are very busy; but perhaps there should be more of them, since there are so many of us?
I'm gonna miss GSU after I graduate, and I know it's mostly due to the awesome people in the Hospitality office. They are like a close family, and that is an experience from college I'd never like to change. Keep up the awesome job!!!
All faculty officers are very helpful and willing to help students. However, there is one exception, it is Dr. Pavesic. He usually does not know what did he say in the last class and mess up materials. Therefore, most students in his class got confused. Dr. Barber is a very knowledge person and she taught many useful materials in class. Dr. Cannon is a good teacher. She is willing to help you taking the first step in this industry. Ms. Robbe is a very energetic teacher and she can create a good learning atmosphere in class.
To make the classes more challenging and make sure the students learn because having a high GPA does not make up for the student not learning.
I think that everything, in the School of Hospitality, is great and should change with the current trends thru out the industry.
The faculty at GSU's School of Hospitality are amazing like no other!

I feel required Hadm courses should be available each semester, otherwise i think it should be told, written, mailed, etc to students that certain classes are only offered on certain semesters. Because for this reason i am graduating late because i was not infomed of this lack of scheduling.

I tranferred from FVSU and I don't think that internships are readily made available to students in hospitality. Yeah there is a job and internship thingie on the website but its just not enough. At Fort Valley the advisors made sure that you had an internship like every summer if you were not doing something else...here I don't feel that help or should I say pushing to excel at something that is obviously needed for this industry.
I would like to see the school of hospitality have their own setup, that represents a hotel and restaurant setting where students in this field can reinforce what they learn in the class room. And be better prepare for the real world.I realy think it will help a lot.
I have enjoyed my time at the school. I think it might be more beneficial to welcome incoming Hospitality students earlier in their careers, as soon as they declare invite them to do more with the school and feel welcome. Especially for transfer students new to the school and unsure of the process at the school. Otherwise it was a great experience and I recommend the major to anyone that wants or enjoys working with people and seeing them happy.
I have been in the hospitality industry for many of years and there has been some classes that I feel have not been benefical for me. I have learnedin the work place than what the Hospitality school has offered. I also feel that the event manangement class is a joke. When putting on an event whether it is a school, wedding, retirement, etc... having 54 students in a class with no direction makes the enjoyment of learning about event management not worth the money nor the time that each and every student must put in to pass the class to graduate. I also feel that there in some of the professor at GSU that discourage some students. If a student wants to have a career in other area beside restaurant and hotel management but the career is related to hospitality some of our professor project a negative tone. Overall I am excited about my degree in Hospitality and I know my future with my work experience inside the industry plus my degree will be extremely rewarding for my in the long run. Because I believe that great things happen for people who wait. Thank you for allowing me to be part of this school and I look forward too one day being able to come back and tell future hospitality students what I have accomplished in my career in the hospitality industry.
Please ensure the availability of great internships to ALL School of Hospitality students.
I do not like how many of the students DO NOT take the instructors seriously and consider class some kind of joke. I am tired of students being praised for where the work at, these student sometimes get the idea from this that the way they do things at work is definite best practice when it is not. I really enjoy the instructors and the classes but hate how I feel out of place among my fellow students.
I have enjoyed my time in the Hospitality program so far at state. I feel so lucky to be involved in a program like this one. I have had wonderful teachers so far!
Well, would like to ask faculty and staff to continue doing what they do best.
I wish we could specialize more in what we wanted to do for a living. i wish there was more choices for classes and then you could totally learn the area you want to enter.
I wish that there were more courses avaliable in specific areas. For example, I want a career in Event Planning, but there is only one course that offers event planning.
Some of the courses offered, including Food Cost Control and Food Production, are only beneficial to those individuals looking into restaurant ownership or franchising. As major requirements these classes are a waste of time for those NOT interested in these aspects of the hospitality industry. There are so many other classes that would benefit me, yet I have to take these classes just because they are required to graduate. In the future these classes need to be excluded from the general hospitality degree, those individuals who have a desire in these fields can take the classes, just not the rest of the students.

School of Hospitality

Graduate Student
I'm in my 3rd semester or my graduate program and have completed most of my required classes. I am begining to look for HADM electives for next semester (summer 2006) but don't see ANY available. I searched the previous two semester and noticed the same. I'd like to see ALOT more HADM classes offered. Specifically... HAdm 8100 Hospitality and Tourism Management HAdm 8400 Financial Management Applications for Hospitality Enterprises HAdm 8500 Economic and Cultural Impact of Travel and Tourism HAdm 8600 Trends in the Food Service Industry HAdm 8700 Trends in the Hotel Industry If these classes aren't available, It defeats the purpose of even concentrating in Hospitality Administration. (Which is the reason I chose GA State in the first place).
