GEORGIA: IN PARALLEL VOTE COUNT SAAKASHVILI GETS OVER 96 PER CENT OF VOTES


Tbilisi, 05 January’04, BBC Monitoring, Source: Kavkasia-Press. - According to the results of the parallel vote count, [leader of the United National Movement] Mikheil Saakashvili receive 96.51 per cent of votes in the 4 January presidential election. This was said by representatives of the Fair Elections nongovernmental organization at a news conference at the Marriott Hotel in Tbilisi today. The percentage of votes cast for the other candidates is as follows: Roin Liparteliani - 0.24 per cent, Kartlos Gharibashvili - 0.16 per cent, Zurab Kelekhsashvili - 0.7 per cent, Teimuraz Shashiashvili - 1.93 per cent and Zaza Sikharulidze -0.22 per cent. A spokesperson for the Fair Election organization said that these were not the final results as reports from polling stations opened in foreign countries had not been received yet. Though, she said, no considerable changes in the above figures are expected. According to the Fair Elections nongovernmental organization, no major infringements or inaccuracies have been observed during the elections. Only a few minor infringements have occurred in the elections and, as, on the whole, these could not affect the outcome of the elections, the organization assesses the election positively. According to the results of exit polls conducted by the American research centre Global Strategy Group, Mikheil Saakashvili received 85.8 per cent of votes, Teimuraz Shashiashvili - 0.4 per cent, Roin Liparteliani - 0.4 per cent, Kartlos Gharibashvili - 0.1 per cent, Zurab Kelekhsashvili - 0.1 per cent and Zaza Sikharulidze - 0.1 per cent, while 0.4 per cent voted against all the candidates. Some 12 per cent of voters refused to take part in exit polls.

The US Ambassador to Georgia told journalists today that he was sure of victory of Mikheil Saakashvili at the Presidential elections, and results of survey among the electors witnessed it.

SOME IRREGULARITIES IN GEORGIAN ELECTION NOTED - CIS OBSERVER


Tbilisi, 05 January’04, ITAR-TASS. - Insignificant irregularities in the Georgian presidential election "that have been recorded by observers from the CIS cannot affect the results of the voting", CIS Executive Secretary Yuriy Yarov said today. According to Yarov, cooperation between the Georgian Central Electoral Commission and district electoral commissions was not properly balanced. In addition, some polling stations were not able to start work at the right time, Yarov said. "Information on the presidential candidates and model voting papers were also lacking," he said.

EVERY THIRD RESIDENT OF THE AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC OF AJARA SUPPORTS MIKHEIL SAAKASHVILI


Tbilisi, 05 January ’04, Inter-Press - The January 4 Presidential elections have shown, that every third resident of the autonomous Republic of Ajara supports opponent of Aslan Abashidze, Mikheil Saakashvili. The preliminary results provided by the Association of Young Jurists of Georgia suggest, that over 75 thousand residents of Ajara have voted in the elections, i.e. more then 25%. The preliminary outcomes, received in the regional office of the Association of Young Jurists of Georgia show, that 7672 voters have taken part in the elections in Khulo region, i.e. 24.4%, 6802 in Kedi region - 42.8%, 7778 voters in Shuakhevi region - 47.8%, 14 283, 20% in Khelvachauri region, 9 929 - in Kobuleti, i.e. 14% and 26 202 voters in Batumi - 24.4%. One of the founders of public movement 'Our Ajara' Tamaz Diasamidze says that the real number of voters in Ajara fluctuates in 200 - 210 thousand. The number of votes gained by Mikheil Saakashvili shows, that Abashidze government might have lost its influence over the population.

ARMENIANS OF JAVAKHETI HOPE SAAKASHVILI WILL PRESERVE RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE IN AKHALKALAKI


Akhalkalaki, 05 January ’04, Caucasus Press. - The electorate of the Javakheti region of Georgia populated with Armenians has shown an unseen activeness in the early presidential elections. Akhalkalaki Sakrebulo (City Assembly) Chairman Artur Yeremian told journalists that in several precincts voter activity reached 80%. There are 31,000 voters in Akhalkalaki region of Georgia. Yeremian said that about 60% of voters participated in elections and absolute majority of them supported Mikhail Saakashvili. "The Armenian population of Javakheti hopes that Saakashvili will bring some good changes despite the fact that his program contains no provision regarding Javakheti, such as repatriation of deported Meskhetian population, terms and order of withdrawal of the Russian military base, and social conditions of local Armenians. Despite the pro-western orientation of the new administration, Javakheti people are sure that the question of withdrawal of the Russian base will not be raised in the nearest future. Acting president Nino Burjanadze has many times said that the Akhalkalaki base will not be withdrawn until local Armenians get guarantees of security and new jobs," Yeremian stressed.

MAJORITY MPS ELECTED ON NOVEMBER 2 2003 WILL WORK IN THE NEW PARLIAMENT


Tbilisi, 05 January ‘04, Black Sea Press. - Majority MPs elected on November 2 2003 will work in the new Parliament of Georgia. Parliamentary elections will be held after the proportional system only. Nino Burjanadze, The Acting President of Georgia, will announce the date of the elections soon. The repeated vote at majority Parliamentary elections was held in 11 electoral districts on January 4 alongside with the Presidential elections. According to Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia, these are the winners: Mtatsminda district - Giorgi Tsereteli (bloc Burjanadze-Democrats); Saburtalo district - Giorgi Targamadze (bloc National Movement); Samgori district - Mikheil Machavariani (Burjanadze-Democrats); Chugureti district - Bessarion Jugeli (National Movement); Gldani district - Koba Davitashvili (National Movement); Tianeti district - Ilia Archemashvili (Labour Party); Akhaltsikhe district - Nugzar Parunashvili (initiative group); Khoni district - Akaki Bobokhidze (National Movement); Chiatura district - Sergo Yakobidze (initiative group); Lanchkhuti district - Bidzina Gujabidze (National Movement); Poti district - Roman Melia (Burjanadze-Democrats). Repeated vote was held in four majority districts. Nino Burjanadze, leader of bloc Burjanadze-Democrats, won in Kutaisi district. Valeri Gelashvili recommended by the initiative group is leading after results of the first round in Khashuri district. Report from Akhalkalaki district was not got in CEC because of power cutoff in the region. The repeated vote is to be held in Aspindza district, because none of the candidates gathered the obligatory 1/3 of the votes for. The repeated vote will be possibly appointed on January 25, the day of inauguration of the new President of Georgia. The majority elections will be held on the same day in Bolnisi electoral district.
