Sgt. Micheal E. Dooley, 23, shot and killed Sunday night, June 8, 2003, at a check point in Iraq. The Ft. Carson soldier was part of the Third Armored Calvary Regimen, 1st Squadron, Troop B. A 1998 graduate of Pulaski County High School in Virginia, he joined the army immediately after and spent 7 months with the peace keeping forces in Bosnia. During that time Micheal’s future wife, Christine Garard of Murrysville, had begun mailing letters to him through an Adopt-A-Platoon program. When he returned to Ft. They exchanged vows on Mar. 7, 2002 and had a formal ceremony February 22, 2003. Micheal and Christine are expecting their first child in October. In Christine’s words, “I want everyone to know that Micheal was a loving, caring, and brave man. I was always so proud of him and always will be. I respected him for serving our country, and he will always be my hero. I will keep his spirit alive. He was so excited about becoming a father. Last week he chose a name for the baby boy we are expecting. Last time I spoke to him was on Friday night. He was on his way to the promotion board and wanted to hear my voice before he went. He told me he would be home before our baby was born. We both said we loved and missed each other. I told him to be careful, and that was the last I spoke to him.” In addition to his wife and their expected son, Micheal is survived by his parents, Russell Dooley and Ann Davis, a brother, Jacob Ward of Pulaski, his grandfather, Kenneth G. Boyd

Monday, April 19, 1926

DUDLEY, Robert Boyd, better known as Bobby, died Sunday, June 1, 2003 at Pulaski Community Hospital. Bobby was born in Dublin on April 19, 1926 and the third son of the late L. T. Dudley and Mary Dudley Mustard. He was preceded in death by his two older brothers, L. T. and Billy. Bobby and his two brothers were mentally handicapped men who were well known citizens in the Dublin community. He filled his days by walking the streets of Dublin and was a familiar face at all the businesses where he could be seen peeking in their windows to see what was happening. Bobby visited with the men at the long gone Melton and Marshall gas station, walked the aisles at Wade's wanting a hot dog, hunk of cheese and a Pepsi Cola. Bobby loved the old Dublin Pharmacy and helping Doug "fill" the pill bottles. He "managed" the Dublin Hardware with Diane, visited with Elden at Old Mill Furniture and flirted with the women at all the beauty shops. His last love was Bob Donley's Barber Shop. He got up in the mornings anxious to get out on the streets to go to work. He would tell everyone he cut hair all day and made $2 dollars. Bobby had a girlfriend on every corner and ladies waiting in line to be called his darlin'. However, it was well known that his #1 darlin' was Sue Thompson-Hubble, who was also his Sunday School teacher. Bobby always sat beside her in class with his head on her shoulder. Sue's husband, Bill, was one of his best buddies who taught him how to make faces and drive a wheelchair. He loved to eat better than anything and a hamburger and ice cream from Graffiti's made his day. The girls there spoiled him rotten by giving him everything he wanted. A life long member of Dublin United Methodist Church, he had the remarkable record of 68 years perfect attendance in Sunday School and almost the same record in worship. He was a member of the Wesley Class. Bobby was known to preach you a sermon whether you thought you needed it or not. Somehow he knew if you weren't in church on Sunday. Then he would call you a "sorry rascal" and tell you to be in church next week. The folks that sat around him on Sundays waited for Bobby to say, "That's it", before they moved from their seats to leave the worship service. Bobby was an example to all because of his love for everyone and his enjoyment of life. Most Dublin folks have a Bobby story like: stopping a tourist on the street and then being mistaken for the Town Police, flagging a Norfolk and Western train on through town that was supposed to stop, telling everyone to "get that cat out of here". Somehow he knew when any church was having a potluck supper and went hoping for a chicken leg. He wandered the town streets and we all took the time to wait for him to cross the road. Bobby taught us that knowing Jesus was all-important, that loving one another was the right thing to do and that laughing at ourselves was okay. Bobby and his brothers influenced our lives by helping us be accepting of all people, especially those with handicapping conditions. Our town is a better place for having had them walk on our streets and then into our hearts. He is survived by his sister, Mary Jane and cousins, Jackie Morgan and her daughter Amanda, Hazel Dudley Cox and sons Tim and Gary. Visitation will be Monday, June 2, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dublin United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 3 p.m. from the Dublin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Travis, Rev. Charles Lockerby and Rev. Dr. Tal Stanley officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Dublin Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bob Donley, Doug Futrell, Mark Buckland, Dan Sumner, Carl Lindstrom and Phillip Baker. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Wesley Sunday School Class in addition to Haven Howe, Warner Osborne, Cortland Spotts and John Bryant. The family desires that persons wishing to remember Bobby give memorials to the Rebuilding Fund of the Dublin United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 577, Dublin, Va. 24084. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.
