3.4 Importance of Event in Decision to Visit Liverpool
Respondents were asked to rate the importance of the Battle of the Atlantic event in their decision to visit Liverpool. For residents, 79% said that it was the sole reason for their visit. 50% of visitors said that the event was their sole reason, with a further 24% stating that it was “very” or “fairly” important.

Looking at this by type and origin of visitor, 61% of day visitors said that the event was the sole reason for their visit, with a further 23% stating that it was very or fairly important. For staying visitors from the UK or overseas, around half said that the event had some influence on their decision to visit Liverpool, although only 17% (UK visitors) and 7% (overseas visitors) stated that it was the sole reason.

3.5 Alternative Activities
Respondents were asked to say what they probably would be doing that day if the event weren’t being held. A majority (66% of residents and 50% of visitors) said that they would have stayed at home or gone to work.
30% of residents and 43% of visitors said that they would have done something else in Liverpool anyway. As these people represent a potential abstraction from other local activities, they are not counted towards the economic impact (see section 5.3).
