At Dundee on the Twenty ninth day of October 1952

At the Annual General Meeting of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within Kidd’s Rooms Lindsay Street at 6.45 p.m.

Present:


Deacon J A Davidson, Boxmaster George F Brown, Mr Frank Hay Clerk and Fifty five Members of the Craft
I Minutes

The following minutes were read and approved:

(a) Annual General Meeting 31st October 1951

(b) Special General Meeting 14th December 1951

(c) -do- 14th March 1952

The Clerk reported that Committee Meetings were held on 22nd November 1951. 14th February 1952 20th June 1952, 5th September 1952 and 16th October 1952.


II. Accounts

The Boxmaster’s Cash account for the year ended 15th September 1952 was submitted along with the relative Vouchers and these were approved on the motion of Ex-Convener A S Drummond seconded by M Bishop Cadenhead.


III. Election of Office Bearers

(a) Deacon.

On the motion of Ex-Deacon Andrew Wallace seconded by Ex-Convener R J Loggie Mr J A Davidson was unanimously re-elected deacon for the ensuing year.

(b) Boxmaster.

On the motion of the Deacon seconded by Mr J Duncan Dundas, Mr George F Brown was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year.

(c) Committee.

It was intimated that Messers John W Sutherland, David S Moyes, Charles G Lang and Spencer G Dryden were due to retire and were not eligible for re-election and that there was also a vacancy on Committee for one year due to the death of the late Mr Donald M Barrie. Te Following Members were elected to Committee ti fill the vacancies and to hold office for two years namely: W A Findlay, Ralph Pride, Robert Simpson and Matthew M Waddell. Mr Alfred G Whitton was elected to hold office for one year.

(d) Clerk

Mr Frank Hay was unanimously re-elected Clerk to the Craft.
IV. New Members

It was intimated that Initiation Meeting had been fixed to be held in Gray’s Rooms on Friday 12th December 1952 and Friday 13th March 1953

The Deacon intimated that while last year at this time we had a waiting list of Members, at the present moment candidates had been forthcoming and he appealed to the Members to endeavour to obtain sufficient candidates to ensure the Making in December.

At a Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held he Office of the Clerk at 148 Nethergate Dundee at 6 p.m.

Present: Deacon J a Davidson, Boxmaster George F Brown, Ex-Deacon Andrew Wallace, Messers W R Falconer,, w A Findlay, R S may, Ralph Pride, Robert Simpson, Matthew M Waddell, Alfred G Whitton and Frank Hay Clerk
The Deacon extended a welcome to the New Members of Committee.
I. Minutes.

The Minute of Meeting held on 16th October 1952 was read and approved.


II. Annual Dinner.

The Clerk submitted a Statement of Receipts and Payments inn respect of the Annual Dinner which showed a debit balance of £14. 7. 9d which was approved.


III. Applications for Membership.

The Clerk intimated that only two Applications for Membership had been received namely from:

Robert Hogg Thomson, Wine & Spirit Merchant “Glenwyn” Dalhousie Road Barnhill Dundee.

Alexander Patullo Sparks Commercial Stationer 8 Hill Street Broughty Ferry.

The Committee having fully considered these applications unanimously recommended the admission of the Applicants for consideration at the Special Meeting to be held on 12th December next. A full discussion took place whether in view of the small number of Applicants a Making should be held or not and it was unanimously agreed that such a making should be held and that the Tickets for the Supper should be 18/-. It was also agreed to accept the Supper to be provided by the D.P.M. at 8/- per head.

The Deacon suggested that another Meeting should be held on Friday 21st curt at 3 p.m. to consider further Applications.

The arrangements for the Special Meeting were then discussed and it was decided that the Toasts should be “The Queen”, “The Nine Incorporated Trades”, “The City and Trade of Dundee” and “The New Members”.. it was proposed that Mr J D Collins should be asked to propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades”, and that Mr Robb whom failing Mr Hubert G Scott be asked to propose the Toast “The City and Trade of Dundee” , the replay to this Toast to be in the hands of our own Member Lord Dean of Guild Goodfellow. Mr Findlay was asked to propose a vote of thanks.

Mr Hay was to approach Mr David Reid and the Deacon was to approach the Deacon Andrew Dargie to request these two Members to oblige us with songs during the evening. The Clerk was instructed to ask Mr Hinchcliffe to act as accompanist.

The Committee having fully considered these Applications unanimously recommended the admission of the Applicants for consideration at a special Meeting to be held on 12th December next.

The Clerk reported that he had finally fixed the Toast List for the Supper. It was also reported that Mr Reid and Ex- Deacon Dargie had already consented to favour he Company with songs.

The Minute of Meeting held on 21st November 1952 was read and approved.

Applications for Membership

The Clerk intimated that he had received the following Applications for Membership namely:

John Douglas Anderson –do- 2 Ure Street Dundee

Ian Henry Buist Carmichael Solicitor 138 Arbroath Road Dundee

The Committee having fully considered these Applications unanimously recommended the admission of the Applicants of consideration at a Special Meeting to be held on 13th March next. The Boxmaster and Mr Simpson also stated that they thought further Applications might be forthcoming but it was decided that these should be left over for the next Making.

The Committee then considered the Toast List and the Clerk was instructed to make the necessary arrangements.

The deacon undertook to approach Ex-Deacon Dargie and Mr Reid was also to be approached to give songs during the evening.

It was further decided that the Tickets should be 18/- and that the Catering should be done by the DPM as formerly.

Statements of the last Making and Supper were submitted and these were approved.

The Deacon reported that extraordinary repairs had to be done n the Nine Trades Property and that all the Crafts were asked to scrutinize their pension lists most carefully. . It was decided to go over the Bonnetmakers List of Pensions at the next Meeting of Committee.

At Dundee the Thirteenth day of March 1953

At a Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Office of the Clerk at 148 Nethergate Dundee at 3 p.m.

Present: Deacon J A Davidson, Boxmaster George F Brown, Messers W R Falconer, W A Findlay, Matthew M Waddell and Andrew Wallace

Apologies for absence were intimated from Messers Ralph Pride and Robert Simpson

The Deacon occupied the Chair
The Deacon stated that this Meeting had been called in order that he might explain the action which he had taken in cancelling the Initiation Meeting and Supper as he considered that in view of Deacon Anderson’s death and the fact that two of his sons were to be made at that Making no other action could be taken and that e intended no Slight to the Members of the Committee by not calling a Meeting to arrive at he decision. The Members of Committee present expressed their views that the Deacon had taken the correct action in the circumstances.

The Clerk explained to the Meeting that the Deacon had wide powers and originally the Committee was only appointed to audit the Boxmasters Account. The Deacon stated that so long as he remained Deacon to the Craft he would always consult the Committee in all matters.

The question of the next Initiation Meeting was then considered and after considerable discussion it was decided that an Initiation Meeting should be held on the same evening as the Annual General Meeting and followed by an Initiation Supper and the date was fixed fir 14th October to be held in Gray’s Rooms.

It was then decided that the Annual Dinner should be made a separate function as was always done prior to 1939 and a provisional date was fixed for 4th December 1952

The Clerk was instructed to write to the Trust Houses Ltd and ascertain if the Queens Hotel would be available for such a function.

The question of the pensions paid to the representatives of deceased’s Members of the Craft was hen discussed and the Clerk was instructed to ascertain the present financial circumstances of those pensioners.

The Minute of Meeting held on 13th March 1953 was read and approved.

The Clerk reported that Friday 16th October was not available in Gray’s Rooms and it was then decided that the Initiation Meeting and Annual Meeting should be held on Tuesday 20h October in Gray’s Rooms.

The Clerk read a letter from the Trust Houses Ltd and in view of the fact that it was not certain whether the Hotel would be open for engagements by December it was decided to hold the Annual Dinner in Andrew G Kidd’s Rooms if possible on 18th December and if not on a Tuesday as near that date as possible.

Mr Hay reported that he had been in touch with Lord Scott and Colonel Gomme-Duncan and both these gentlemen were quite prepared to attend the Annual Dinner as principal speakers for our Annual Dinner.

The question of the pensions paid to the Representatives of deceased Members of he Craft was then discussed and the Clerk reported that he had not been able to obtain baby information regarding the present financial circumstances of these pensioners. The Deacon and Clerk undertook to look into the position as early as possible.

The purchase of an Ex-Deacons Badge was authorised.

The Minute of Meeting held on 9th July 1953 was read and approved.

The arrangements for the Initiation Meeting and Annual General Meeting to be held in Gray’s Rooms on 20th October were then discussed it was agreed if possible that the same Toast List which was arranged for the cancelled Initiation Meeting in March should be fixed fore this Meeting and the Clerk was instructed to arrange accordingly. After discussion it was agreed that the tickets for the supper should be 15/-, the time of the Meeting to be 6.30 followed immediately by the Annual General Meeting.

The Boxmaster intimated that he proposed to submit the name of Mr John M Robb as the new Boxmaster to be appointed at the Annual General Meeting.

The arrangements for the Annual Dinner to be held in Kidd’s Rooms on Tuesday 8th December were then discussed. Mr May reported that he had been successful in arranging for Lord William Scott to attend and to propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee", Colonel Gome-Duncan M.P. would also attend if his parliamentary duties permitted. the Toast List was then discussed and it was decided that the Revd Hugh O Douglas, Parish Minister of St Mary’ Church should be asked to propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” and Sir Gavin Wilson asked to propose the Toast of “The Imperial Forces”. The Toast of “Our Guests” to be in the hands of Mr May and to be replied to by Colonel Gomme Duncan. The Boxmaster intimated that he would endeavour to arrange for the Local Commander of the Territorials in this area to reply to the Toast of “The Imperial Forces”.
