At Dundee the Twenty First day of October 1951

At the Annual General Meeting of the Bonnetmaker Trade of Dundee held within the Royal Hotel at 6.45 p.m.

Present: deacon Andrew Wallace, Boxmaster J A Davidson

And

Sixty Members of Craft


I. Minutes.

The following Minutes were read and approved:

(a) Annual General Meeting 1st November 1950

(b) Special General Meeting 9th March 1951

The Clerk reported that Committee Meetings were held on 9th February 1951, 4th September 1951, 13th September 1951 and 18th October 1951.
II. Accounts

The Boxmasters Cash Account for the year ended 15th September 1951 was submitted along with the relative Vouchers and these were approved.


III. Election of Office Bearers

(a) The Deacon.

On the motion of Deacon Andrew Wallace seconded by Ex-Deacon Andrew Dargie Mr James A Davidson was unanimously elected Deacon for the ensuing year. The presentation of an Ex-Deacons Badge to Mr Wallace was made by the Deacon.

(b) The Boxmaster.

On the motion of Andrew Davidson seconded by Mr A Baird Mr George F Brown was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year.

(c) The Committee.

It was intimated that Messers Norman M Allan, David D Watt and John D Inches were due to retire and were not eligible for re-election.

The following Members were elected to Committee to fill the vacancies and to hold office for two years namely: Messers R S May, W R Falconer and Ronald M Barrie.

(d). The Clerk.

Mr Frank Hay was unanimously re-elected as Clerk to the Craft.


IV. New Members.

It was intimated that an Initiation Meeting had been fixed for 14th March 1951 in Gray’s Rooms.

In this connection Ex-Convener A S Drummond and Ex-Deacon Robert Duncan enquired if it had been decided only to have one Meeting in the year, and they both expressed the opinion that it was desirable that two Meetings should be held.

The Deacon stated that if sufficient Initiates are forthcoming the Committee would consider holding two Meetings.

At a Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Trade of Dundee held within the Office of the Clerk 148 Nethergate at 3.30 p.m.

Present: Deacon James A Davidson, Boxmaster George F Brown, Ex-Deacon Andrew Wallace, Messers S G Dryden, W R Falconer, R S Hay and David S Moyes

An apology for absence was intimated for Mr Ronald M Barrie


I. The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 18th October 1951 were read and approved.
II. The Deacon intimated that he had now received seven Applications for Membership and the Boxmaster stated that another Application would be forthcoming. It was unanimously decided to endeavour to hold a Making in December. The Clerk reported on the accommodation available in Gray’s Rooms, the Royal Hotel and the Royal British Hotel for December and read a letter from the Royal British Hotel stating their terms. As this Hotel was available on Friday evening 14th December it was unanimously decided to hold a Making on that night and the Clerk was instructed to make the necessary arrangements.
III. Applications for Membership were intimated from the following:

Andrew Clark Master Slater 5 Muirfield Street Dundee.

Ian McTavish Ramsay Secretary City Saw Mills 30 Douglas Street Dundee.

Hubert G Scott Jute Manufacturer The Weisha 385 Perth Road Dundee.

The Committee having fully considered these Applications unanimously recommended the admission of the Applicants for initiation at the Special Meeting to be held on 14th December next.

IV. The Toast List was then considered and it was agreed to invite E H Hope Esq. Rector of the Harris Academy to propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” and to ask Provost Fenton to reply whom failing Lord Dean of Guild Goodfellow and to ask Ralph Pride to propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” the reply to be in the hands of he Convener.

These gentlemen having severally emitted the customary declaration were accordingly admitted Members with all the rights, privileges and immunities thereto pertaining to Membership conform to Minute of Admission in the Lockit Book. The Clerk was instructed to have Certificates of Membership issued on payment of entry money and dues.

At a Meeting of the committee of the Bonnetmaker Trade of Dundee held within the Officer of the Clerk at 148 Nethergate at 3.30 p.m.

Present: Deacon J A Davidson, Boxmaster George F Brown, Ex-Deacon Andrew Wallace, Messers Spencer G Dryden, C G Lang, r S May and David S Moyes

An Apology for absence was intimated from Mr J W Sutherland


Reference was made to the great loss the Craft had sustained by the death of Mr Ronald M Barrie who was a Member of Committee of this Craft at the time of his death. The Clerk was instructed to Minute the Committees and Crafts appreciation of his services.

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 2nd November 1951 was read and approved.

Applications for Membership were submitted for the following:

The Committee having fully considered these Applications unanimously recommended the admission of the Applicants for consideration at the General Meeting to be held on 14th March next.

The Clerk intimated the arrangements he had made for the Making which was to be held in Gray’s Rooms and submitted for the approval of the Committee sample menus from the Dundee Pasteurised Milk Co Ltd. it was recommended that the menu at 8/- per head should be accepted. The Toast List was considered and the Clerk was instructed to make the necessary arrangements. Mr R S Hay undertook to contact Mr Leslie Cannons and endeavour to get him to sing at that evening.

The Deacon raised the question of the lack of sufficient Bonnets when there were a large number of Applicants being made at a particular evening. It was decided to obtain three Bonnets and the Clerk reported he had already contacted Smith Brothers in connection with this matter. The Deacon, the Boxmaster and Mr C J Lang undertook to meet the cost of one Bonnet each and to make a gift of these to the Craft. The Committee thanked those Members for their kindness and the Clerk was instructed to endeavour to obtain these new Bonnets if possible for the next Meeting.

The Minute of Meeting held on 20th June 1952 was read and approved.

He Deacon reported that the Royal British Hotel was not prepared to make available the dining room for the Annual Dinner proposed to be held on 17th October next. He farther reported that he and the Clerk had had a Meeting with the Manager of the Royal Hotel and there was submitted a proposed Menu. There was also submitted a draft Menu for Andrew G Kidd Ltd who stated that their Lindsay Street Rooms would be available on 29th October. After a full discussion it was unanimously decided to accept the terms submitted by Andrew G Kidd Ltd ad the Clerk was instructed accordingly.

The Toast List was then considered and it was suggested that the Toasts should be: “The City and Trade of Dundee”: “The Nine Incorporated Trades”: and “The Clergy”. Ex-Deacon Wallace undertook to approach Mr Thomas Mitchell Ex-Lord Provost of Aberdeen to propos the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” and the Clerk was instructed to invite Lord Provost Black to reply to this Toast. It was decided to also Mr William Blain to propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” the reply which would be in the hands of the Convener. It was further agreed to invite Sheriff Cullen as a guest and to request him to propose the Toast of “The Clergy” and the Revd T R S Campbell to reply to this Toast. Ex- Deacon Wallace also undertook to approach Mr Graham with a view to his arranging vocalists for the evening and the Clerk undertook to ask Mr Hinchcliffe to once again act as accompanist.

The question of the most suitable time for holding Committee Meetings were discussed and it was agreed that in future the Meetings should be held at 3 p.m.

II. Accounts

The Boxmaster’s Cash account for he year ended 15th September 1952 was submitted along with the relative Vouchers and Securities and the same having been examined and approved the Cash Book was docqueted as correct.


III. Clerk’s Salary

The Committee fixed the Clerk’s Salary for the year ended 15th September 1952 at £31.10/-.


IV. Annual General Meeting and Annual Dinner.

The final arrangements regarding the Annual Dinner and Annual Meeting were discussed. It was decided that an invitation should be sent to the Deacon of the Three Trades.
