FROM THE HISTORY OF COMPUTERS
Computer systems have been classed into three generations. The first generation consisted of vacuum-tube-based machines. They used magnetic drums for internal storage and magnetic tape for external storage. These computers were slow compared to modern ones (and required data to be brought to them).

Second generation computers using transistors began to appear in 1959. The internal storage used magnetic cores. This form of storage represented a tremendous increase of speed and reduction of bulk over previous storage methods. The external storage of second generation computers used magnetic discs. This form of storage also added increased speed and greater “online” capability as compared to magnetic tape systems.

Third generation computers began to emerge in 1964. These computers used integrated circuits. It increased their capability and decreased size. Integrated technology also provided improved internal storage capability. Solid-state memory greatly increased the speed and capacity of the external memory while decreasing its cost and complexity.

Later model computers have the capability of handling numerous input devices directly. Modern computers are so fast in their operation that they can handle many users without users being aware that others are on the system.

THE FIRST COMPUTERS

In 1930 the first analogue computer was built in America. This device was used in World War II to help aim guns. In fact, the start of World War II produced a great need for computer capacity. The need was especially great for the military purposes. In 1942 J. Eckert and J. Maushly and their associates decided to build a high-speed electronic computer to do the job. They worked at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering of Pennsylvania University. The ENIAC's design and construction were financed by the United States Army during World War II. The construction contract was signed on June 5, 1943, and work on the computer was begun in secret. This machine became known as ENIAC (Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator). The ENIAC was a modular computer, composed of individual panels to perform different functions. Twenty of these modules were accumulators, which could not only add and subtract but hold a ten-digit decimal number in memory. ENIAC was about 1,000 times faster than the previous generation of relay computers. ENIAC used 18,000 vacuum tubes.

A microprocessor is a programmable logic device. That is, the function or logical operation that the device accomplishes may be altered by applying instructional “words” at its input.

This definition, although correct, is somewhat broad. The term “microprocessor” has come to mean the central processing unit (CPU) of a small computer system. By itself, a microprocessor cannot function. But when it is combined with a number of support circuits it has most of the characteristics included in the classic definition of a computer. The microprocessor has traded the greater speed and word length of a computer for compact size and low cost.

A microcomputer is a fully operational system based upon a microprocessor chip which in itself contains a large percentage of the computer capability. The system possesses all the minimum requirements of a computer. There are different types of microprocessors. They can be general-purpose or special purpose, single-chip or bit-slice.

Microprocessors are small and cheap enough that they've found their way into thousands of products, not just personal computers.

СOMPUTER PROGRAMMING
Programming is the process of preparing a set of coded instructions. They enable the computer to solve specific problems or to perform specific functions. The essence of computer programming is the encoding of the problem by means of algorithms. The thing is that any problem is expressed in mathematical terms, but the computer cannot manipulate them. Any problem must be specially processed for the computer to understand it.

The phase in which the programmes are written is called the development stage. The programmes are lists of instructions that will be followed by the control unit of the central processing unit (CPU). The instruction of the programme must be completed in the appropriate sequence or the wrong answer will result. To guard against these errors, logic plans should be developed. There are two common techniques for planning the logic of a programme. They are flow charting and pseudo code.

HERMAN HELMHOLTZ (1821-1894)

1. Herman Helmholtz is celebrated for his contributions to physiology and theoretical physics. A delicate child, Helmholtz early displayed a passion for understanding things, but otherwise developed slowly, and had no marked early talent for mathematics. Although he wished to study physics, he was persuaded by his father to take up the study of medicine, entering the Medical Institute at Berlin, in 1838.

2. His researches into physiological optics began about 1850 with the discovery of the ophthalmoscope (1851), followed by investigations into colour, including the problem of colour-blindness. He also made fundamental contribution to the understanding of the structure and mechanism of the human eye.

3. Helmholtz's first and most celebrated paper in theoretical physics was his article on the conservation of force. In this paper he proved the conservation of total energy of a system of particles which were interacting through central forces depending only on the masses and separations of the particles. Other important work in theoretical physics included the famous paper on vortex motion (1858), and the application of the principle of least action to electrodynamical problems.

4. Helmholtz was undoubtedly the most versatile of nineteenth-century scientists. From 1871 on words he was perhaps more famous as a theoretical physicist "than as a physiologist. But it seems probable that apart from his work on the conservation of energy he will ultimately be remembered more for his epoch-making researches in physiological optics and. acoustics in which his talents as physiologist, physicist, mathematician and experimentalist of genius were most vividly displayed.

Задание 5. Прочтите 4-й абзац текста и вопрос к нему. Из приведенных вариантов ответа укажите номер предложения, содержащего правильный ответ на поставленный вопрос:

For what researches will Helmholtz be remembered?

JAMES CLERK MAXWELL –

THE FAMOUS SCOTTISH MATHEMATICAL AND PHYSICIST
1. Maxwell was born in a well-known Scottish family, early showed signs of mathematical talent. At the age of fifteen he contributed a piece of original work on the drawing of oval curves to the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The work was so well done that many refused to believe that such a young boy could be the author. At Cambridge, which he entered in 1850, he graduated second in his class in mathematics, as Kelvin had done before him. Maxwell was appointed to his first professorship in 1856.

2. In 1871 Maxwell was appointed professor of experimental physics at Cambridge. While at Cambridge he organized the Cavendish Laboratory, named in honour of the eccentric English scientist Henry Cavendish of the previous century. Several decades later the Cavendish Laboratory was to do great work in connection with radioactivity.

3. The most important work of Maxwell life carried on between 1864 and 1873, when he placed into mathematical form the speculators of Faraday, concerning magnetic lines of force. Maxwell’s theory showed that electricity, and magnetism could not exist in isolation.

Where one was so was the other, so that his work is usually referred to as the electromagnetic theory.

Maxwell died before the age of fifty in 1879. When Einstein’s theories upset almost all of “classical physics”, Maxwell’s equations remained untouched as valid as ever.
