Year 7 Sydney / Canberra Trip 31st July – 4th August 2017
As part of our Junior Secondary program, students from Year 7 have recently undertaken an education tour of our national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The aims of the activities undertaken were to bring to life the civics and citizenship knowledge that the students have learnt about in the classroom as well as to experience other sites that are of cultural and historical importance in both Sydney and Canberra.
It was an amazing experience for these students to fly to Sydney, see Taronga Zoo, the snow and some of our Capital’s most important buildings: Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, Old Parliament House, National Museum of Australia, the AIS and the Royal Australian Mint. Students enjoyed the hands-on experience at the Discovery Zone and the impromptu army demonstration at the Australian War Memorial. Engaging in role-playing at Parliament House also offered the students the opportunity to link their learning with real life and to get a laugh out of their peers and teachers that got to dress up for particular roles.
Questacon, with its interactive learning and the Snow visit being a ‘first time’ for many, proved to be favourites amongst the students as did staying at the Australian Institute of Sport and eating meals with elite athletes!
This trip helped the students (and some teachers) develop their resilience being away from their families and helped the students to become more independent and able to more effectively communicate with others.
Overall it was a fantastic trip that was thoroughly enjoyed by both teachers and students (and possibly their parents as well). We are looking forward to another successful adventure in 2018!
