Emily Robertson, of Woodland, a member of Girl Scout Troop No. 002, who has received the Girl Scout Gold Award. This is the highest award in Senior Girl Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. Stephen McCausland, of Brunswick, who is retiring after 20 years as a member of the Brunswick Town Council. Mr. McCausland served as chair of the council for 6 years. He cochaired the committee that planned the construction of the Coastal Connector. He has been an asset to the town council and will be missed by his fellow councilors as well as the citizens. Maya De Groote and her 6th-grade class at Boothbay Region Elementary School. They are winners of the "energy savings tips for home and school" contest held by Governor Baldacci's Office of Energy Independence and Efficiency. The winning tip suggested that the teacher appoint a student each week to turn off the lights when the class leaves the room. Captain Malcolm Pierce, of Gardiner, who is retiring after 27 years of dedicated service with the Gardiner Fire Department as a firefighter and emergency medical technician. Brian Christopher Vautin, of Scarborough, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 47, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. We extend our congratulations to Brian on this accomplishment; (HLS 12)

Jeffrey Fenlason, of Oakland, who has been named Police Officer of the Year by the Waterville Exchange Club. Officer Fenlason is the school resource officer for the Winslow schools and worked for the Oakland Police Department for 14 years before joining the Winslow Police Department. We extend our appreciation to Officer Fenlason for his dedication to the youth of the State and congratulate him on his receiving this award; (HLS 13)

Fire Chief Jim Robertson, of Windham, on the occasion of his retirement from the Falmouth Fire Department after 18 years of service to the department and the citizens of that community. He was an effective leader and was instrumental in improving equipment, communications and facilities during his tenure. Previously, he was a longtime firefighter for the City of Portland, attaining the rank of deputy chief. Brenda Hill, of Avon, on being named Employee of the Year at the Strong Nursing Home. She has worked at the Strong Nursing Home for 5 years, having started as night nurse and later becoming the Assistant Director of Nursing and the Director of Nursing Services. Wendell Stadig, of Levant, recipient of the Helicopter Association International's Aviation Maintenance Safety Award for 2004. This prestigious award pays tribute to helicopter mechanics and technicians worldwide who have 5 or more years of accident-free and violation-free professional helicopter maintenance experience. Mr. Stadig is a mechanical technician with LifeFlight of Maine and has been involved with aircraft maintenance for more than 20 years. We thank him for his dedication to saving lives in every corner of the State; (HLS 23)

Joseph Clark, of Millinocket, for his 8 years of dedicated and outstanding service to the people of the State of Maine in the House of Representatives during the 118th, 119th, 120th and 121st Legislatures. Rita Mailhot, of Sanford, who is retiring after 40 years as a registered nurse. Ms. Mailhot worked in the operating room at H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford. She has spent countless hours helping her extended family without expecting anything in return. We send our appreciation to Ms. Mailhot for her dedicated service and commitment to the citizens of Sanford; (HLS 25)

Tetrault's Market, of Brunswick, a mainstay of Brunswick's Franco-American community for more than 75 years, as it closes its doors on December 31, 2004. Tetrault's Market was opened in 1928 by Ludger Messier, the uncle of the current owner, Paul Tetrault and his wife Cathy Tetrault. Tetrault's Market exemplified the best of Maine's small businesses as it served its community and provided a meeting place for the neighborhood. We extend our congratulations to Paul and Cathy Tetrault on their retirement and we send them our best wishes; (HLS 26)

Priscilla R. White, of Avon, on her 80th Birthday, October 23, 2004. Mrs. White is a grandmother and the mother of Rose, Tammie, Timothy and Mark. The 2 sisters planned a surprise celebration, as this was Rose's first visit back to Maine since 1987. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Mrs. White on this special occasion; (HLS 27)

Peter W. Cox, of Georgetown, a cofounder of the Maine Times. Mr. Cox and his partner John N. Cole founded the statewide weekly magazine in 1968. He served as publisher, then editor and publisher through 1985, when he sold the paper. He stayed on for a year and returned as editor in 1993-94, continuing his column until 2000. The Maine Times developed a national reputation for its excellent coverage. After Peter left the paper, he devoted his energies to public policy affecting Maine. Peter served on the boards of the Maine Civil Liberties Union, Maine Audubon Society and Portland Museum of Art and was an advisor from Maine to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. We acknowledge his vast contribution to the State of Maine. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 28)

Don and Ann Pilcher, of Orono, for their many years of community service to the Town of Orono. Mr. and Mrs. Pilcher have devoted time to the Orono High School, the University of Maine and the Orono Democrats and to many civic organizations in the Orono area. The Town of Orono has changed for the better because of Don and Ann Pilcher. Their generous contributions as educators, environmentalists, community leaders and Democrats make their legacy far-reaching and long-lasting. We extend our appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Pilcher for their contributions to the Town of Orono and wish them well in their new adventures in Washington State; (HLS 29)

Everett L. "Larry" Palleschi, Jr., of Monmouth, who is retiring after 34 years with the Monmouth Fire Department. Larry joined the department in 1970. He served on several fire department committees. Larry's energy and dedication will be missed by fellow firefighters of the department as well as by his friends and neighbors in Monmouth and the surrounding communities. We extend our appreciation to Larry for his dedication to the citizens of Monmouth and the State and wish him well in his future endeavors; (HLS 30)

Captain Everett L. Palleschi, Sr., of Monmouth, on his retirement after 50 years with the Monmouth Fire Department. Captain Palleschi joined the department in 1954 and has served in many capacities, including being a firefighter, crew chief of Engine 4, captain of Engine 4 and captain of Engine 1. He was also a very active member of the "Red Phone Fire Department Dispatch System" and a member of many fire department committees. His energy and dedication will be missed by fellow members of the department as well as friends and neighbors in Monmouth and the surrounding communities. We extend our appreciation to Captain Palleschi for his dedication to the citizens of Monmouth and the State and wish him well in his future endeavors; (HLS 31)

Dottie Melanson, of Falmouth, who has been recognized by the Maine Democratic Party for her many years of service as the State Party Chair, National Committeewoman and long-time chair of the Cumberland County Democratic Committee. We admire her dedication to the principles of fairness and equality for all Maine citizens. Dottie Melanson has given generously of her time to various organizations in our State that are working to protect civil liberties and civil rights. We acknowledge her efforts to assist Maine citizens to become involved in the political process. We send our appreciation to her for her commitment to the people of the State of Maine; (HLS 32)

Sergeant Thomas John Dostie, of Somerville, whose death during an explosion at a mess hall in Mosul, Iraq has shocked and saddened citizens throughout the State and nation. Sgt. Dostie was a member of the 133rd Engineering Battalion and had transferred out of the 152nd maintenance Company in Camp Keyes, Augusta. He had received his SCBA firefighter certification just prior to leaving for Iraq. He was active in the Somerville Volunteer Fire Department and recently joined the Windsor Fire Department. We join others in Sgt. Dostie's community and throughout the State in extending our deepest sympathy to his beloved parents, Michael Dostie and Margaret Dostie, his loving family, his friends, neighbors and coworkers; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 33)

Sergeant Lynn Robert Poulin, Sr., of Freedom, whose death during an explosion at a mess hall in Mosul, Iraq has shocked and saddened citizens throughout the State and nation. A member of the Maine Army National Guard for 23 years, Sgt. Poulin is remembered by his family and many friends as being very kind, generous and friendly. We join others in Sgt. Poulin's community and throughout the State in extending our deepest sympathy to Sgt. Poulin's beloved wife, Jeanne Poulin, his sons, Michael and Lynn Robert, Jr., his 2 stepchildren, Ryan and Cindy, and other members of his loving family; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 35)

Kimberly "Kim" Morrow Allen, of Raymond, a paralegal in the Office of the Revisor of Statutes, on her more than 18 years of dedicated service to the Maine State Legislature. Kim started as an Information Office Assistant in March 1986, and in September of that year she was hired as a paralegal. Her tireless commitment to excellence and her friendly manner will be missed by her coworkers and the many people of the Legislature with whom she has worked. We acknowledge Kim's dedicated service to the Legislature, including her authorship of innumerable legislative sentiments, and to the people of the State of Maine. Joan Gagne, of Augusta, on the occasion of her retirement as a Senior Legislative Technician in the Office of the Revisor of Statutes. Joan has committed 31 years of distinctive service to State Government, in the last 25 of which she worked in the Revisors Office. Her knowledge, helpfulness, wit and humor will be greatly missed by her coworkers. We extend to Joan our gratitude and appreciation for her many years of dedicated service to the Legislature and wish her happiness in her retirement; (HLS 37)

the opening of the new Town Office in Greenville. The new Town Office was built to replace the old Town Office, which was built in 1965. The new Town Office will house the police department, the code enforcement officer's office, the town manager's office, the town clerks, the assessor's office and the municipal officers. Darrell Morrow, Sr., of Millinocket, a veteran of the United States Navy who served aboard the USS Columbus in World War II. Following his service discharge, he was employed for 33 years by Great Northern Paper Company. Mr. Morrow was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church and the VFW, Francis E. Elliot Post #4154. He and his wife Beverly raised 6 children with whom he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. Mr. Morrow will be sadly missed by his family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 39)

Claudia Hawkes, of Windham, who has been named Maine's Outstanding Adult Education Support Staff Person of the Year by the Maine Adult Education Association. Claudia was presented the award because of her sensitivity and commitment to adult learners, her thorough knowledge of the data management information system and her extraordinary willingness to help. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to her on her achievement; (HLS 40)

the Atomic LEGOs, Mt. Blue Middle School seventh graders, of Farmington, who won the Innovative Design Award at the first annual LEGO League Competition. This award was presented to the team best demonstrating an ability to use a creative design, component or strategy to help people with disabilities. Since the middle school had no team, the boys created their own team, consisting of Jarod White, Craig Collins, Josh Tracy and Reed Drechsel. We congratulate the Atomic LEGOs on their distinctive achievement; (HLS 41)

Hiram Mather Perry, of Newburgh, who moved to Maine in 1967 to realize his dream of dairy farming. After retiring from farming, he returned to his hobby of woodworking and displayed his custom work at craft shows throughout New England. He also conducted, in consultation with nationally respected scientists, an intensive study of the environmental movement and subsequently published a newsletter in an effort to keep Legislators informed. He frequently attended hearings in Augusta pertaining to environmental issues. A veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Perry was an avid member of the "Troop Greeters" at Bangor International Airport. This caring and dedicated citizen and family man will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 58 years, his family, friends and community; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 42)

Angelo Morelli, Jr., of Portland and Madawaska, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. He was born on January 10, 1925 and married Iva Rose Libby on June 3, 1949. The couple had eight children: Stephen Angelo, Janet Iva, James Andrew, Charles Allen, Joseph Michael, Linda Anne, Jean Evelyn and Elizabeth Ann. He has six grandchildren: Tina Heather, Ricky Ned, Katie Julia, Russell Mathew, Nicholas and Katherine Elizabeth and one great-grandchild, Ariana Rose. Angelo worked for the Portland Press Herald for 41 years and Town Taxi for 31 years. He also worked for the Portland Fire Department, the Portland Police Department as a volunteer and LaFavor's Restaurant. He took special pride in providing for his family by working three jobs. He loves bowling, playing cards, cribbage, poker, horse races, rides to Old Orchard Beach and the Red Sox; (HLS 43)

Mike Imbergamo, of Portland, who 2 months ago won a seat on the Portland School Committee. The Deering High School junior is an honor student and a member of the soccer team and was the lead singer for a garage rock band. We congratulate Mike on his successful campaign and extend our best wishes to him; (HLS 44)

Sophia Njaa, of Portland, who 2 months ago won a seat on the Portland School Committee. The Portland High School junior is a member of the school's Drama Club and hopes to have a career in nursing. We congratulate Sophia on her successful campaign and extend our best wishes to her; (HLS 45)

Helen Melledy, of Monmouth, in recognition of her 85th birthday on January 13th. In addition to being a mother and grandmother, Helen has been an active member of the Cumston Public Library Association for a number of years. She has also contributed countless hours volunteering at the Theater at Monmouth. Helen volunteers at the vestry once a month, and has sent baked goods and raffle items to Monmouth Museum, Monmouth Fire Department, the Monmouth Center Church and the Town Offices. Helen embodies all that a volunteer is to a community. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to her on this special occasion; (HLS 46)

Hugh Morris, of East Millinocket, a kind and caring man whose passion for life affected all those with whom he came in contact. He was a decorated Korean War Veteran, a member of the American Legion and a founding member and past president of Katahdin Friends Institute. Hugh was a long-time employee of Great Northern Paper Company where he was a member of the carpenters and joiners union. He was also an active member of St. Peters Catholic Church and a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. He will be sadly missed by Ester, his wife of 47 years, his children, grandchildren, friends and community; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 47)

Stephen C.H. Mead, of Lovell, a member of Boy Scout Troop #155, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Stephen for achieving this honorable distinction; (HLS 48)

Jay Bartner, of Old Orchard Beach, who is retiring as Old Orchard Beach School Superintendent after 13 years of dedicated service in that position. He has been in the field of education for 29 years, 5 of those years as principal at Old Orchard Beach High School. During his administration, Old Orchard Beach High School was named a National School of Excellence and the number of students furthering their education increased 30 percent. We congratulate Jay on his many years of dedicated service and commitment to education and extend our best wishes to him; (HLS 49)

The Academy Hill School LEGO Team, of Wilton, winners of the Project Presentation Award at the first annual LEGO League Competition. The award is presented for high-quality research, innovative solutions and creative presentation. The team showed a deep understanding of the research question, which dealt with handicapped-accessibility issues in the community. We congratulate the team, coaches and MSAD #9 on this fine accomplishment; (HLS 50)

Captain Christopher Cash, a native of Old Orchard Beach, who was killed on June 24, 2004 while on patrol training Iraq's civil defense forces. Captain Cash, a member of North Carolina's Army National Guard, was a graduate of Old Orchard Beach High School in 1985. He will be lovingly remembered for his exemplary character, helpful nature and outstanding leadership skills. Christopher's commitment to and sacrifice for his country have earned him the pride and gratitude of his native community and State; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 51)

Bruce Johnston, of Lyman, recipient of the Chief Edward Mullen Award presented by the Goodwin's Mills Fire and Rescue Department. Bruce, who served the department and community for 37 years, rose through the ranks from lieutenant and captain to deputy chief. His knowledge, example and common-sense approach to challenges have earned him this commendation. We appreciate his many contributions and extend our congratulations to him on receiving this award; (HLS 52)

Kyle Richard Tremblay, of Naples, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 156, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. We extend our congratulations to Kyle on this noble accomplishment; (HLS 53)

Harvey Kail, of Orono, and a University of Maine Associate Professor of English, who received the 2004 Ron Maxwell Award for Distinguished Leadership in Promoting the Collaborative Practices of Peer Tutors in Writing recently at the 21st Annual National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing. This national award recognizes accomplishment, dedication and leadership in collaborative learning in writing centers by encouraging students to take increased responsibility for their learning. Mr. Kail founded the Writing Center at the University of Maine in 1979, one of the first in the country. In addition to coordinating the Writing Center and teaching English, Mr. Kail has published on the subject of peer tutoring and composition and is involved with efforts to create and expand writing centers globally. We congratulate this dedicated educator on receiving the Ron Maxwell Award and recognize him for his contributions in research and pedagogy; (HLS 54)

Leo M. Smith, formerly of Rockland and Kittery, who was deeply involved in educating Maine's youth. Leo taught physical education and health at Robert Traip Academy, where he served as the varsity football and varsity basketball coach. While at the Academy, he also started the girls track program, was a charter member of the Traip Booster Club and directed the graduation exercises for many years. He later became an education administrator at Rockland District High School, serving as assistant principal and principal; he was also Director of Student Activities and started the all-sports Boosters Club. Leo belonged to many teacher organizations and was selected as an Educator of the Year by a Lewiston newspaper. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 55)
