The CMM (coordinated Management of meaning)
Four systems of context:
Speech Act: Act of Speech reveals speaker’s intention (ex. to flatter or persuade)
Episode: Sequence of communicative behaviors that exist as a unit with a Beginning, middle or end, define the nature of an interaction
Relationship: defines what kind of language you use (talking to stranger or a friend etc.)
Life Script: What kind/ role of person are you/ do you play (loving parent, aggressive executive), controls how you present yourself
Cultural Pattern: National, religious, ethnic etc.. -membership), defines how you talk to each other
Rapport talk: focuses on relational meaning
Report talk: focuses on content
Forms of discourse: Communicators must be willing to follow the Maxims and cooperate with another to make discourse work, violation of Maxims can be used to send a message, affects meaning
