The Christian Service Program provides an opportunity for seniors to practice the Gospel values learned over the first three years. It is a complement to the religious education program that articulates our call to be persons for others in imitation of Christ. Sophomores and Juniors are also involved in service activities.
In addition to the work project, there is a student self-reflection aspect that includes group discussion and the writing of reports. Projects are determined in consultation with Mr. Wendell, the Director of Ignatian Service Programs. Seniors are required to complete 72 hours of a service project in senior year. Satisfactory completion of the program is a requirement for graduation.
Registration and Scheduling
If, at the beginning of the school year, there is an error or conflict in a student’s schedule, he must see the Registrar. Requests for course changes should be made when students receive their course verification sheets in the spring of each school year. A $30 fee will be charged for elective changes.
Once classes have begun, changes may be made only for serious reasons. Students should discuss these with their teachers, advisors, counselors and parents or guardians. Students should then bring their requests to the Dean of Academics for a final decision and approval. The final date to do so is the Friday of the first full week of school. A $30 fee will be charged.

The school year is divided into two terms, and each term has two marking periods. Reports are distributed at times specified in the school calendar. Grade reporting is done by a numerical scale in most courses. Teachers may add comments.
At the end of the first term, a term average is presented for each course. The term average is an average of the grades achieved during that term: each grading period counts 40%, and the term examination counts 20%.
During each quarter, Progress Reports are issued. Through comments, teachers give an evaluation of a student’s current academic standing in each course. If the evaluation is not favorable, we trust that parents will assist in motivating students to take the steps necessary to attain a passing mark for the quarter.
A grade of Incomplete is given in rare cases due to special circumstances, e.g., serious illness. This grade is given by the Headmaster after consultation with the teacher. Grades of Incomplete must be made up by a specified date determined in consultation with the Headmaster.
Verification that parents have seen grade and progress reports will be done either electronically or through the use of verification form paper as determined by the Headmaster. Students have daily Jug until signed forms are returned.
Homework
Homework is a regular component of the learning process, and should be expected, in one form or another, on a daily basis in each class. Sufficient time should be made in a student’s daily schedule to allow for thorough and proper completion of assignments. Most students find this takes between 1 ½ and 3 hours. Homework assignments are also essential to developing the habits necessary for success in college and beyond. Parents should monitor their son’s work and ensure that they are studying, even when no written homework is assigned in a particular class.
Honors
Xavier commends outstanding academic achievement by awarding honors for each grading period. Students who earn grades of 90 or above in all courses are awarded First Honors certificates. Students who earn grades of 85 or above in all courses are awarded Second Honors certificates.
Textbooks
State textbooks have a label and registration number. The book numbers are recorded when distributed. Books must be returned in good condition at the end of the year, with no writing in them other than your name on the inside front cover. Students will be required to pay to replace any damaged or missing books.
Examinations
At the end of each term, examinations are given in most courses. Seniors, if qualified, may be exempt from some final exams. A senior who has an 85 average or above in the fourth quarter and an 85 average for the second semester (3rd and 4th quarters combined) will be eligible for a final exam exemption (June).
Exams must be taken at the assigned time. Early or deferred exams are arranged only by the Dean of Academics. Absence from an exam requires a note from a parent; in the case of illness, from a doctor. Deferred exams are administered at the discretion of the Dean of Academics and a fee of $30 is charged.
If school is closed on an exam day due to snow or other emergency, that day’s schedule will be made up at a later time, and you will continue with the next day’s exam schedule. For example, if the school is closed on Tuesday, you would take the Wednesday exams when you return on Wednesday. The Tuesday exams would be rescheduled.
Failures and Deficiencies - - Requirements for Promotion and Graduation
Any grade below 70, or an F where letter grades are given, is a failing grade.
A full-year course is failed when the final grade is below 70. A one semester (or ½ credit) course is failed when the term or final grade is below 70.
All courses taken by a student must be passed before a student can be promoted or graduated. Course failures may be remedied by attending Xavier’s summer school or a summer school at another school, or online as approved by the Dean of Academics. A student who fails to remediate his summer school course(s) will be dismissed from Xavier.
Seniors: In addition to having a course average of 70, a minimum grade of 60 must be attained on the final exam (January for first semester courses) of each course(s) in order to pass the course. Students who receive a grade below 60 will have one opportunity to re-take the exam prior to graduation. Students who attain the minimum grade of 60 on all exams, and who pass all courses with a grade of 70, will be eligible for graduation. If a student does not attain the minimum grade of 60 on the exam(s), remediation of the course is necessary.
A student with more than one failure in June of senior year may NOT participate in the commencement exercises (graduation), nor attend the ceremony.
