Students may not enter the area marked Jesuit Community without explicit permission.
D. Literature, Signs and Notices
Students may not distribute written material (leaflets, magazines, books, etc.) to other students without explicit permission of a teacher or member of the Administration. Nothing is to be posted on bulletin boards without explicit permission from faculty or administrators. No one may mark, touch, or move signs posted on any board. All signs and posters are to be posted only on bulletin boards, never on any painted surface, nor on walls, doors, or stairs without explicit permission of the Dean of Students.
E. Bulletin Boards
Good communication is essential for the smooth running of the school. Announcements are read during advisement period and posted on the bulletin boards outside of the Dean of Students Office and on the school’s website. If a student is late for homeroom, it is his responsibility to read the announcements on the bulletin board outside the Dean of Students Office.
F. Library
The Library is open each day from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Silence must be maintained at all times.
The Library is to be used for individual study and library work. Books are to be returned only to the Check-in Desk, not left on tables nor returned by students to the shelves.
G. Learning Center
The Learning Center has personal computers with Internet access and word processing and learning programs. Proctors are available to provide assistance. No food or drink is permitted. Playing games is prohibited.
H. Activity Rooms
Student Activity Rooms and the Changing Rooms must be kept neat and clean. Any damage will result in heavy fines, the payment of damages and possible disciplinary action. Student leaders, captains, editors, etc., will be held accountable for the actions of students under their leadership.
I. Cafeteria
The Cafeteria and Quad are the only places in the school where students may eat without special permission. No food or drink may be taken out of the cafeteria or the Quad. (Penalty is three jugs).
Since the Cafeteria is the place where all students eat lunch and snacks, it is important that every student be responsible and clean up his table when he has finished using the cafeteria, so that others may find a clean room in which to eat. Each student is responsible for any trash on or under the table where he is sitting, whether or not he put it there. Throwing anything earns a minimum of five days jug.
The Cafeteria is available until the end of 6th period as a study hall and group work area.
J. Quadrangle
During class hours, ball playing and noisy activity are prohibited in the Quadrangle. Students may use the tables and benches to relax, eat and study. Basketball is permitted in the Quad after school. Students are welcome to congregate and eat in the Quad during the school day, as long as a proper noise level is maintained and the area is kept clean.
K. Commons
The Commons provides a place to relax, read or study. Ball playing is allowed during 4th, 5th and 6th periods and after school until 4 PM. When playing ball in the Commons, students must wear sneakers. Food and drink are not permitted.
L. Gym
Unless told otherwise, students should report to the gym for all physical education classes. The teacher will give instructions to those who cannot, for some reason, participate in class. Students must wear sneakers and gym clothes when using the gym; no shoes of any kind, even rubber-soled, are permitted. Students must change clothes in athletic locker rooms only, not corridors.
M. Elevators
Students who need to use the school elevators due to injury must receive an elevator pass from the Dean of Students Office. The use of elevators without permission warrants five jugs.
N. Teachers’ Areas
Students may not touch anything on or in a teacher’s desk unless directed to do so by a teacher or administrator. Removing an item from a teacher’s desk will be considered stealing and the student is liable for expulsion. The Faculty-Staff Lounge on 2L is private and you are not to enter this room.
VI. STUDENT BEHAVIOR
The final arbitrator of school rules is the Dean of Students.
A. Gentlemanly Behavior
Xavier students are expected to be gentlemen at all times, within school and outside of school.
Students must understand that they represent Xavier High School to the public, whether traveling to and from school, communicating electronically through cyberspace, participating in interscholastic events, or simply wearing a Xavier shirt or jacket. Courtesy is proper and expected, e.g., holding the door for others, addressing students and adults properly, and not blocking stairs or hallways.
Foul language is never appropriate, nor is booing or whistling at a game, rally or assembly. Foul language within earshot of a teacher will be punished by ten days jug. Foul language or gestures directed at a teacher is grounds for dismissal.
A gentleman is always honest. Students are expected to be honest in all dealings with their peers and with the faculty, administration, and staff of Xavier High School. Dishonesty will be dealt with severely by the Dean of Students.
B. Class Cuts
Students may not be absent from a class without the permission of the Dean of Students. The penalty for class cuts is five days of Jug and grades of zero for any academic work that is missed. Multiple instances of class cuts will result in more serious disciplinary action, such as probation and possible expulsion. In all cases the parent, teacher whose class was cut, student’s counselor and homeroom advisor will be notified.
C. Dress Code
The dress code at Xavier High School requires students to be dressed neatly and to avoid extremes. A dress shirt with all buttons secured, a tie, blazer or school sweater, and dress shoes must be worn most of the time. The dress code, minus the blazer or sweater, is in effect to and from school. Upon arrival, students are expected to go directly to their locker and get into full dress code before heading to the cafeteria, Commons or anywhere in the building. Students must be in dress code in order to enter the library or learning center.
Students are expected to adhere to the following dress code standards from head to toe. Each dress code violation warrants one jug.
-
Pants - Students must wear trousers of a dress nature. Trousers that resemble jeans (outside pockets, etc.) are not dress pants. Extremes, such as loud colors, stripes, and checks, are to be avoided. Torn, frayed or trousers that are excessively long are not to be worn.
-
Belts - Traditional black or brown dress belts are always to be worn with trousers. Belts with extreme colors, designs, studs, or oversized buckles should not be worn.
-
Shoes - Black or brown dress shoes are to be worn to, from and during school. Shoes that resemble sneakers, including boat shoes or deck shoes with white rubber soles, are not dress shoes. Sneakers or boots are not permitted without special permission. Boots may be worn, without specific permission from the Dean, when there is significant snow or rain. Shoes may not go above the ankle. Socks that extend over the ankle must be worn at all times.
-
Shirts - For Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, only white or light blue dress shirts are permitted. Checked, plaid, flannel, polo, and rugby shirts are not to be worn. Shirts must always be tucked in, even when the summer dress code is in effect.
-
Ties - Ties should be worn properly knotted at the neck and top shirt buttons closed at all times.
-
Sweaters & Coats - Students may wear either a maroon or navy blue blazer. (School blazers may be purchased from Craft Clothes, 247 W. 37th St., (212) 764-6122). A varsity letter sweater may be worn in place of the blazer or school sweater. Regular school sweaters should be purchased in the Xavier Knightshop. No other sweaters, sweatshirts, or jackets may be worn. A school patch worn over the heart on the sweater and/or blazer is sold in the Knightshop.
-
Senior Privileges - As an alternative to wearing the school sweater, only seniors may wear one of six solid color v-neck sweaters. The color choices are brown, black, grey, blue, maroon and green. The sweater must be long sleeved, v-neck and a solid color. No school patch is required for seniors. Buttons, zippers, stripes and designs are not permitted. Seniors may wear colored or striped dress shirts that would be considered appropriate in a professional environment. As with the privilege of wearing alternative blazers, seniors are expected to make choices that are consistent with the spirit of Xavier’s overall dress code and should avoid extremes of fashion.” The Dean of Students determines what is extreme and therefore unacceptable.
-
Jewelry - Tattoos, piercings, or other markings on the skin must be covered by clothing whenever students are in dress code. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, tongue rings and other jewelry are not permitted, except a wristwatch, tie pin, ring, retreat cross, or activity pins. Long pocket chains and hats are never to be worn in the building, including after-school and evening activities. They will be confiscated for the rest of the year.
-
JROTC - JROTC students must wear their military uniform when there is inspection. The uniform may also be worn on all school days. In warm weather, the class B (summer green) uniform may be worn according to Army regulations posted by the Senior Army Instructor (SAI). Military uniforms are issued to all cadets upon enrollment in the program after the 6-week introductory course. All uniforms are issued to cadets free of charge at the supply room. However, cadets must pay for replacements of lost or missing parts. The uniform must be returned upon leaving the Regiment. Army Blue uniforms can be purchased from I. Buss Uniform Company, 1212 E. 24th Street #7, 212-529-4655.
-
Summer Dress Code - Once the Dean of Students announces summer dress code, you may wear a Xavier polo shirt purchased from the Knightshop. Undershirts should be a solid color, with no pictures or printing, and not extend below the sleeves or bottom of the outer shirt.
D. Hair Code
Hair must be clean, neat, cut in good taste, and the length may not touch the top of the shirt or jacket collar, except for the closely cut hair at the back of the neck. Hair is to be styled so that it is away from the eyebrows, and at least one-half of the ear is visible. Cadets in the regiment may not have hair touching any part of the ear and hair must be tapered in the back and on the sides. The Dean of Students will make the final determination as to what haircut or style is appropriate for Xavier students.
The face should be clean shaven; moustaches are not permitted. Sideburns must be trim, straight, and not exceed the length of the ears.
Avoid extremes in hair styles. A moderate crew cut is acceptable. Lines, designs engraved in hair, Mohawk styles, or dyed hair is not permitted. There will be daily jug until hair grows in. No type of rubber bands, curlers, etc., may be worn in school. Ponytails, braids, cornrows, etc., are not permitted. If a student has any questions about the hair code, he should speak to the Dean of Students before getting a hair cut.
