E. Harassment Policy

As a Catholic and Jesuit institution, Xavier High School follows an educational tradition forged over the past 450 years which is based on respect and a commitment to justice. Xavier High School’s commitment to the human dignity and human rights of each of its students and members of its faculty and staff is of paramount importance in formulating all of the educational policies that govern its community. It is with these rights in mind that we set out to provide and maintain an educational community in which all members can achieve their spiritual, scholastic, social, artistic and athletic goals in an environment free of any type of harassment.

The harassment of students, faculty or staff because of religion, race, gender, national origin, age, color, physical or mental disabilities, sexual orientation or any other reason will not be tolerated at Xavier High School. Such behavior contributes to a hostile, offensive and intimidating environment for work and study, which has a deleterious effect on a person’s chance at succeeding in a challenging academic institution. Harassment contaminates the atmosphere of trust that must exist in a school environment in order to foster independent, creative learning.
Sexual harassment is included in Xavier High School’s Harassment Policy. Xavier High School will not tolerate the sexual harassment of any student or member of its faculty or staff. Sexual harassment includes such behavior as unwelcome physical contact and sexually explicit language or gestures, which can include unwanted or uninvited sexual advances. It also includes conduct that creates a hostile, intimidating or offensive work or study environment, which can include the presence of sexually explicit photographs, drawings or other materials and the telling of sexual stories.
Bullying is a specific type of harassment that involves a repeated effort by an individual or group to intimidate someone with less power or social support. Bullying is physical or verbal abuse that moves beyond simple teasing toward the threatening action which has the effect of placing a student in reasonable fear of harm to his person or damage to his property. Whether on school property, at any school-sponsored event, commuting to and from school, or communicating in cyberspace, bullying is an extremely serious violation of our core principles and offenders will be liable for dismissal.
Hazing is another specific type of harassment that can occur within school-related activities. Hazing refers to any activity expected of someone joining a group (or to maintain full status in a group) that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate. Hazing activities are generally considered to be: physically abusive, hazardous, and/or sexually violating. Xavier’s administration does not consider hazing activity to be harmless pranks or comical antics aimed at developing bonds of brotherhood among young men. Rather, incidents of hazing will be thoroughly investigated by Xavier’s administration and serious disciplinary consequences will result for those responsible.
Students who feel that they have been subjected to any of the above types of harassment by another student or a member of Xavier’s faculty or staff should report the matter to the Dean of Students. Students who become aware that someone else is being harassed in any way should also report the matter to the Dean of Students. The Dean will promptly investigate the complaint and take action as necessary. Such action includes but is not limited to a warning, detention, probation or expulsion in the case of a student offender. If the offender is a member of the faculty or staff, such action may include a letter of censure, suspension or termination of employment.
Xavier High School takes very seriously its responsibility to foster the development of all the talents of its students, faculty and staff. It is our hope that this policy will help to encourage and maintain an environment of mutual respect among all members of the learning community and in so doing will help us all to become “men and women for others.”
F. Alcohol and Drugs
Xavier has very rigid policies about the use of alcohol and other drugs. It is important that students are aware of these policies.
Use or possession of alcohol, marijuana or other drugs is absolutely forbidden at any time, on any part of the school property, in the vicinity of the school, in connection with any school activity, or to or from a school activity. If a student possesses or uses these items, parents/guardians will be notified and the student is liable to expulsion.
When the law requires it, the police will also be notified.
A student should talk to his counselor about any alcohol or drug-related problem. Counselors have their students’ best interests in mind and can make other resources available to them. Any such conversations will be kept confidential.
G. Smoking
Smoking is injurious to students’ health. Students may not smoke during school or school activities, or while traveling to or from school or school activities. Smoking or the possession of smoking materials (cigarettes, matches, lighters, etc.) is strictly forbidden in school, in front of the school building, or within ten blocks of the school at all times. The use of chewing tobacco is also prohibited in the school and at school events. The first offense will result in 10 jugs and a warning letter home. Repeat offenders are subject to increased disciplinary penalties, which may include Jug, a parent meeting, probation and potential dismissal.
H. Detention (Jug)
When a student receives detention on a given day, he must attend that day’s afternoon Jug. Afternoon Jug is held for forty minutes immediately following the final class period, usually from 2:50 pm to 3:30 pm. If he fails to report to the afternoon session, a student has one more chance to serve Jug on the following morning of the next day he is present for school to avoid a cut. Morning jug is held from 7:30 am to 8:10 am. If a student misses the afternoon session and fails to report to the morning session at all, it will be considered a cut and result in five more detentions. A student with multiple detentions may attend both morning and afternoon Jug to work down his total, but he is only required to attend one session.
Arriving late to detention by 15 minutes or less will result in an additional detention. If a student reports more than 15 minutes late to the morning session after having skipped his afternoon option, it will result in two additional detentions.
Delays in public transportation will not excuse a student from morning Jug if he has forgone his afternoon option. Excused absences from both morning and afternoon sessions are rare, but may be granted in extreme cases. Athletic and extracurricular activities do not excuse a student from detention. A student, who repeatedly arrives late for Jug or cuts it entirely, may lose his morning option at the discretion of the Dean.
