M. Cheating

In a competitive academic environment, the temptation to cheat is ever present. Cheating is dishonest and will be dealt with harshly. If a student is suspected of cheating on a quiz, test, exam, lab, paper, or project, he will be sent immediately to the Dean of Students who will conduct an investigation to determine both the guilt and the penalty. In cases where cheating has taken place, the ordinary penalty will be a grade of “0” on the work at hand with a letter sent home. The student may have to serve detention. The student is also warned that a second offense will lead to probation.

At the second instance of cheating, the student will be placed on probation and the Dean will determine further penalties. Violation of probation usually leads to expulsion.
Students found to be cheating on Mid-Term or Final exams will receive a grade of zero on the exam. Additionally, severe disciplinary action will be taken, beginning with the student being immediately placed on disciplinary probation.

N. Suspension & Probation

Suspension usually precedes probation or expulsion. When suspended, the student is removed from ordinary academic classes and all school related activities. The Dean of Students provides specific directions to the student and his family during this time.

The suspension period lasts long enough to provide the administration with an appropriate amount of time to communicate with all relevant parties and carefully consider the student’s situation. Often, the Headmaster will instruct the Dean of Students to convene the Disciplinary Review Board and collect their recommendations about whether to dismiss the student or place him on disciplinary probation. In all cases involving the possibility of expulsion, the Headmaster makes the final decision.
The administration may choose to place a student on disciplinary probation as a punitive measure, rather than expulsion. If this happens, the student, his parents, his guidance counselor and the Dean of Students will meet to discuss the length and terms of the probation. Ordinarily, disciplinary probation is accompanied by thirty detentions. If a student commits a major violation of school policy while on probation, dismissal is immediate.

O. Expulsion

When a student is expelled, he is permanently removed from all academic associations and school functions. The following infractions make a student liable to expulsion:

  1. stealing anything, or being in possession of another’s property (including transportation cards, locks, books)

  2. possessing an unauthorized school key

  3. drinking, or possessing any sort of alcohol on school premises, at activities, or to and from school and school activities

  4. buying, selling, using or possessing drugs (including marijuana)

  5. destroying school or personal property (including graffiti)

  6. disruption of school activities

  7. endangering the good name or reputation of Xavier, whether on or off the premises or in cyberspace

  8. throwing anything out of a window

  9. gross misconduct in any area, including the Internet and social networking sites

  10. endangering the well-being of any person, e.g., firecrackers, injuring other students

  11. tampering with fire hoses, alarms, or smoke detectors

  12. possession of any kind of weapon or tool (No weapons such as knives or bats are to be carried to, from, or during school or school activities. No tools are to be kept in lockers or bookbags, or carried to or from school, without permission of the Dean. All weapons and tools will be confiscated and appropriate measures taken.)

  13. cheating

  14. excessive tardiness or absence

  15. disrespect for faculty or staff

  16. failure to comply with the directives of the Dean regarding jug

  17. sexual harassment

  18. lying to the Dean or Assistant Dean of Students or impeding, in any way, an investigation by the Dean of Students

  19. harassment, slander, defamation, or intimidation of any member of the Xavier community, or the school itself, through the internet, email, or other electronic media.

  20. Fighting or the use of physical violence against another person.

Note: No felt-tip pens, markers, or laser pointers are permitted in the building. Gum chewing, card playing and gambling are not permitted anywhere in school.

Disciplinary Review Board
The Disciplinary Review Board acts as an advisory group to the Dean of Students. The Board’s major responsibilities are:

  1. To convene as soon as possible, at the request of the Dean of Students, whenever a serious, expellable infraction is committed by a student. The Board makes recommendations regarding punitive measures, whether or not a student should be expelled, placed on probation, etc. In cases that involve the possibility of expulsion, the Dean will collect the advice of the Board and present that advice to the Headmaster who makes the final decision.

  2. At the Dean’s discretion, to convene at the end of each academic year to review those disciplinary cases brought before it by the Dean of Students. The Board will then study each case and make recommendation to the Dean. These recommendations may include: warning the student, placing him on disciplinary probation with specified restrictions, or expulsion.

  3. At the Dean’s discretion, to meet during the academic year to review the cases of those with excessive absences, lateness or jugs, those on disciplinary probation, or for any other reason for which their advice is needed.

  4. To advise the Dean regarding changes in the school rules governing student behavior. At the Dean’s discretion, the Board may be empowered to review the Student Handbook and make recommendations regarding penalties and the like.
