Tbilisi, 16 February ‘04, Caucasus Press. - The parliamentary elections on March 28 will become a starting point in the political biography of the movement, member of the political council of the new movement Soso Baratishvili has stated today to journalists. According to him the movement will participate in the elections independently, as it has no time to unite with other political forces into the election bloc. , Baratishvili said. He noted that the last political events and change of power gave impact to perspective of many vital problems settlement, though real ways of their settlement have not been proposed yet. The political movement has precise positions with regard to main issues. It should be noted that son of ex-president Gamsakhurdia - Konstantin Gamsakhurdia is one of the founders of the movement; he will head the party list of the movement.

BURJANADZE CALLS ON OPPOSITION FORCES TO UNITE


Tbilisi, 16 February ’04, Inter-Press. - Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze calls on opposition political forces in Georgia to create an alliance for the parliamentary elections scheduled for March 28. Burjanadze told reporters on Monday that she hopes that the opposition will manage to consolidate before the elections. 'I regard that the future Parliament should have a strong and serious opposition for normal and democratic development of the country', she emphasized.

BURJANADZE'S TEAM TO FORM ELECTION ALLIANCE WITH LEADING PARTIES


Tbilisi, 16 February ’04, Inter-Press. - Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze is actively involved in the process of forming a joint election list of her team members with the two pro-government parties - National Movement and United Democrats. Burjanadze said on Monday that she is sure that leaders of the November 'Rose Revolution' have chosen a right way when they decided to merge, and that her team will maintain the unity with them. 'My team members are not members of either party, however they will be included in a joint election list of these parties', Burjanadze said. She pointed out that the pro-government team should be strong in the future parliament that will provide a powerful legislative body.

CEC TO HOLD A FORTNIGHT PERIOD FOR PRELIMINARY REGISTRATION IN MARCH


Tbilisi, 15 February ’04, Prime-News. - Central Election Commission (CEC) will hold a fortnight period for preliminary registration in March. The chairman of the Central Election Commission Zurab Chiaberashvili declared about this at the press conference in Batumi. According to him, the mentioned step will provide the CEC with more or less complete polling list of the Autonomous republic of Ajara. 2 million 231 thousand voters were recorded while January 4 presidential elections. At present computerization of the aforesaid lists is underway and the chairman of the CEC supposes ending of the process in the beginning of March. Parliamentary elections with proportion rule will be held in March 28.

 CEC CHIEF, ADJARIAN LEADER DISCUSSED ELECTIONS


Tbilisi, 15 February ’04, Civil Georgia. - Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Zurab Tchiaberashvili held talks with Aslan Abashidze, the Head of Adjara Autonomous Republic on February 14 to discuss parliament elections scheduled for March 28. The voter lists of the Autonomous Republic still remain a matter of disagreement between the central authorities and Adjarian authorities. The Autonomous Republic’s leadership claims that there are up to 300,000 voters in Adjara. However, critics suggest that the voter lists are over inflated.

NINO BURJANADZE CALLS UPON THE FACTIONS TO PRESENT DRAFTS ABOUT THE CEC STAFFING


Tbilisi, 13 February ’04, Prime-News. – The Chairwoman of the parliament Nino Burjanadze calls upon the factions to present drafts about the CEC staffing. As Nino Burjanadze declared at the parliament session on Friday, the new government does not want to repeat the same mistakes, which she criticized the old authorities for. According to Burjanadze, the president Michael Saakashvili has already expressed his political will in connection with changing the rule of staffing the CEC. As soon as the suggestion is presented, inter-faction group would be gathered and start working, the chairwoman of the parliament declared. The leader of the fraction "Traditionalists" Gubaz Sanikidze raised the issue of changing the rules of the election administration formation at the parliament session on Friday. FAIR ELECTIONS' TO HOLD PRESENTATION OF THE ELECTION MONITORING CAMPAIGN AT THE MARRIOTT HOTEL


Tbilisi. 12 February ’04, Inter-Press. - NGO 'Fair Elections' will hold a presentation of the election monitoring campaign at the Marriott Hotel today. Representatives of the CEC of Georgia, political organizations and diplomatic missions, accredited in Georgia, have been invited to attend the presentation. 'Fair Elections' was established in 1995. […] The US National Democratic Institute is its major partner and donor organization. It is also financed by USAID, the Embassy of Great Britain, Eurasia Foundation and Open Society Georgia.' The central branch of 'Fair Elections' is in Tbilisi. The organization has 10 regional and 62 district branches through the country.
