PRESENTATION OF ELECTRONIC VERSION OF VOTERS' LISTS


Tbilisi. 03 February’04, Caucasus Press. - Presentation of electronic version of voters' lists will be held in Expo-Georgia Centre today. CEC Chairman Zurab Chiaberashvili told journalists yesterday that the electronic version is to be ready by early March. Only the voters, who passed registration during the presidential elections (about 2,200,000), will enter the lists. The electors who have not passed the registration will have an opportunity to pass it now and have their names entered on the list.

MINISTRY OF JUSTICE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR VOTERS LIST AFTER PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS


Tbilisi. 03 February ’04, Caucasus Press. - The Ministry of Justice will be responsible for the united voters' list after 28 March parliamentary elections. CEC Chairman Zurab Chiaberashvili told journalists today that the CEC declines all responsibility for the lists. He stressed that legislative amendments are being developed to establish a special department for electoral register in the Ministry of Justice. By the current laws, the CEC is responsible for voters' lists, which are based on data provided by the Ministries of the Interior and Justice.

ADJARA WILL TAKE PART IN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS


Tbilisi. 03 February’04, Caucasus Press. - Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze has declared yesterday that Adjara will actively participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia. Abashidze made the declaration at his meeting with EU Special Envoy for the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie in Batumi. The meeting was attended by representatives of foreign diplomatic missions. Aslan Abashidze voiced bewilderment with insinuations and provocations around this issue. the Adjarian leader stated. Mr. Talvitie noted that they had discussed the prospects of democratic development of Adjara and focused on the issue of fair and transparent parliamentary elections. The EU Special Envoy expressed a hope that the CEC will improve its work; this first of all concerns compilation of normal voters' lists. Talvitie stated.

WRITTEN VOTERS' LISTS TO BE USED IN ADJARA

Tbilisi. 03 February ’04, Caucasus Press. - The 28 March parliamentary elections in Adjara will be held only by written voters' lists. CEC Chairman Zurab Chiaberashvili told journalists today that the voters who did not participate in 4 January presidential elections will be registered during the parliamentary elections.

NATIONAL MOVEMENT AND DEMOCRATS TO HOLD UNITING ASSEMBLY WEDNESDAY


Tbilisi. 02 February ’04, Caucasus Press. - The United National Movement and United Democrats will hold a unifying assembly this Wednesday in the State Philharmonic of Tbilisi. The State Chancellery told CAUCASUS PRESS that the assembly will mark final merger of these parties and new party's title will be announced. The party will propose a joint list of candidates for 28 March parliamentary elections. President Mikheil Saakashvili will propose his party-mate Zurab Zhvania for Prime-Minister. It's yet unknown whether Parliament Speaker Nino Burjanadze plans to join the party. She has got dissociated from National Movement and United Democrats lately.

OSCE and UNO to Finance Parliamentary Elections


Tbilisi, 2 February’04; TVrustavi2. -The Ministry of Finance is set to launch financing of the parliamentarian elections to be held on 28 March, 2004. Financial support of $ 7 million for the elections will be totally covered through the grant-based assistance of the international organizations. "Some twenty countries have expressed desire to provide financial aid for the elections. OSCE among them will provide wherewithal necessary in terms of the salaries to the electoral administration personnel. The UNO will also allocate substantial financial aid to this effect." REPUBLICANS AND UNION OF NATIONAL FORCES TO FORM ALLIANCE WITH NATIONAL MOVEMENT

Tbilisi. 02 February ’04, Caucasus Press. - The Republican Party of Georgia and Union of National Forces will ally with the National Movement for participation in 28 March parlia-mentary elections. The deadline for submission of applications to the CEC expires February 4 

30 PARTIES REGISTERED FOR THE MARCH 28 PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS


Tbilisi, 01 February ’04, Prime-News. – Deadline for submitting applications to the CEC for participation in the March 28 repeated parliamentary elections expired at 6 pm of Saturday for the parties that have a deputy in the parliament. As Prime-News was informed in the CEC, 53 parties applied for participation in the elections. The CEC has already registered 30 political organizations. […] In spite of the fact that the current governmental parties "United National Movement" and "United Democrats" have already declared about unification as one party, they submitted applications to the CEC separately. It must be noted that the former governmental bloc "Citizens' Union", honorary chairman of which is the ex-president Eduard Shevardnadze, has not submitted application for participation yet. According to the CEC, the deadline for party's registration is February 7.

PRESIDENT APPOINTED TWO NEW AND THREE OLD MEMBERS OF CEC


Tbilisi, 01 February ’04, Inter-Press. - Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili appointed two new members of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia, while the three other members, who resigned after the presidential inauguration, were reappointed to the posts. Giorgi Khomeriki and Davit Gurgenidze are new faces to the CEC, while Zaza Gorozia, Nugzar Nonikshvili and Karlo Kvitaishvili retook the offices. […]

COALITION OF "TRADITIONALISTS" AND "NDP" RAISES NEW INITIATIVE FOR STAFFING THE CEC


Tbilisi, 30 January ’04, Prime-News. – On Friday the coalition of "Traditionalists' Union" and "National-Democratic Party" raised new initiative for staffing the CEC and will present these principles as a law draft to the supreme legislative body the next week. As one of the leaders of "Traditionalists' Union" Irakli Melashvili stated at the press conference on Friday, first of all the CEC should be staffed on professional basis, with the representatives of non-governmental organizations. In addition, according to Melashvili, according to the second principle, the CEC should be formed by party-parity rule. As one of the leaders of "National-Democratic Party" Irakli Kadagishvili stated at the press conference, many parties support these principles, because the law draft was matter of discussion even before adopting "Baker's version" of the CEC staffing.
