FIVE MEMBERS OF THE CEC RESIGNED


 

Tbilisi. 28 January ’04, www.rustavi2.com - Five members of the Georgia's Central Election Commission appointed by Nino Burjanadze declared about their resignation at the session of the CEC today. Dimitri Qitoshvili, Zaza Gorozia, Elza Guliashvili, Karlo Kvitaishvili, Zurab Nonikashvili and Levan Samkharauli were appointed by Nino Burjanadze when she was fulfilling responsibilities of a president. Today they say they have no moral right to remain on their posts when Georgia has a new president, Mikhail Saakashvili, who is authorized to appoint five members in the CEC. In compliance with Georgian Election Code, president has to appoint five members in the Central Election Commission within the next five days.

 

CHAIRMAN OF CEC OF GEORGIA PROPOSED TO SET UP “MODEL” ELECTION COMMISSION IN MEMBERSHIP OF STUDENTS


 

Tbilisi, 28 January ‘04, Black Sea Press. - Zurab Chiaberashvili, chairman of Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia, proposed to establish “model” election district in Tbilisi Didube district and to set up commission in membership of students of Tbilisi high educational establishments to work at Parliamentary elections of March 28. The students will be trained in the centre at CEC. He proposed to record the work of the “model” commission at videotape for future educational purposes. […]

 

CEC LAUNCHED COMPUTERIZATION OF VOTER LISTS


 

Tbilisi. 28 January ’04, www.civil.ge - The Central Election Commission (CEC) launched to computerize the lists of 2, 2 million voters, which underwent voter registration in December-January. The CEC expects that the computerization will last till the end of February. The election officials say that the voter registration will continue and the number of voters might increase; however the voters, who will undergo registration from today, will not be included in the computerized lists of voters. “So, on March 28 parliamentary elections we will have mixed lists, a part will be computerized and the other part - handwritten,” CEC Chairman Zurab Chiaberashvili told Civil Georgia.

 

25 POLITICAL ORGANIZATIONS INTEND PARTICIPATE IN ELECTIONS


 

Tbilisi, 28 January ’04, Sakinformi. - Applications of 25 political organizations are presented in the Central Elections Committee, which intend to participate in the parliamentary elections on March 28. As the head of CEC Public Relations Service Givi Ordenidze has informed, three of them have already passed registration. Admission of applications from political blocs, parties and organizations to CEC will end on January 31. Process of registration will continue until February 7.

 

NATIONALS AND DEMOCRATS UNITED

The Leaders of the Rose Revolution were expected to unite under one political force after the political development in the country. Consequently, in the parliamentary elections on March 28 this political merger will take part together. The state minister, leader of the United Democrats Zurab Zhvania attended the press conference leaders of the two parties convened at the Hotel Tbilisi Marriot. […] The leaders of the two political parties are to hold a united session in a couple of days to sign the creation of new party and announce its official name according to Zurab Zhvania.

 

"REVIVAL" TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS INDEPENDENTLY


 

Tbilisi, 28 January ’04, Prime-News. - "Democratic Revival Union" will participate in the March 28 repeated parliamentary elections independently. As one of the leaders of "DRU", head of Ajara representation in Tbilisi Hamlet Chipashvili told Prime-News, the party will still be independent, but will have the new election list. "Revival" has not decided so far on the new leader of Batumi party. Chairman of "DRU" parliament faction Jemal Gogitidze is Interior Minister of the autonomous republic of Ajara at present.



"NEW RIGHTS" WANTS TO FORM A BLOC WITH "INDUSTRIALISTS" AND "NDP-TRADITIONALISTS"


Tbilisi, 26 January ’04, Prime-News. - The political union "New Rights" wants to form a bloc with "Industrialists" and "NDP-Traditionalists". As one of the leaders of "Rights" David Saganelidze told Prime-News, consultations over union are underway only with these two political parties; however talks over cooperation are also held with "Christian-Democratic Alliance" and "People's Party". David Saganelidze believes that union of all right-oriented political powers in joint party would be the best outcome for the country, "however this is impossible at present". The repeated parliamentary elections are scheduled for March 28.

KONSTANTIN GAMSAKHURDIA, ZVIAD GAMSAKHURDIA'S SON, RUNS FOR PARLIAMENT


Tbilisi, 27 January ’04, Black Sea Press. - A son of the first Georgian President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, Konstantin is going to run for parliament during the 28 March parliamentary elections. He will run for parliament on the ticket of the new political movement “Freedom”. He expressed hope that the “Freedom” would be capable to overcome the seven-percent barrier to win the elections. He said that the political movement “Freedom” was supporting the Georgia's new authorities. Konstantin Gamsakhurdia, a son of Zviad Gamsakhurdia, has been named after his grandfather, the outstanding Georgian writer. He is a philologist. Since 1992 he, his wife and two sons have been living in Switzerland. He said that he had always wanted to come back to Georgia.

LALI MOROSHKINA FOUNDS A PARTY


Tbilisi. 27 January ’04, Caucasus Press. - TRIBUNA reports that Deputy Minister for Special Assignments Lali Moroshkina plans to found a political party for protection of interests of national minorities. Moroshkina says her party will participate in March 28 parliamentary elections.
