STATE MINISTER OF GEORGIA EXPRESSED READINESS TO REVIEW THE MECHANISM OF COMPOSITION OF CEC OF GEORGIA

Tbilisi, 23 January ‘04, Black Sea Press. Zurab Zhvania, State Minister of Georgia, expressed readiness to review the mechanism of composition of Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia for Parliamentary elections to be held on March 28. Zurab Zhvania declared to TV Company Rustavi-2 that the authorities would agree for it, in order Parliamentary elections be fair. He stressed that the oppositional Parties that declared about unacceptability of current principle of composition of CEC were not to think that their rights were infringed. According to him, Baker's formula used for composition of electoral administrations for Parliamentary elections in Georgia of November 2 2003 was not already fit, and another conception was to be prepared. Zurab Zhvania stressed that the Parliamentary elections were appointed for the end of March after requests of NGOs and the oppositional Parties, in order they had time for preparation for the elections.



MEMBER OF INDUSTRY SAVES GEORGIA PAATA KURDOVANIDZE ELECTED MAJORITY MP IN ABASHA

Tbilisi, 23 January ‘04, Black Sea Press. - Member of bloc Industry Saves Georgia Paata Kurdovanidze was elected majority MP in Abasha electoral district. Fulfilling resolution of Supreme Court of Georgia, special group of Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia checked the results of the vote at polling station No. 7 in Abasha at Parliamentary elections under majority system. CEC reported after results of the check that Paata Kurdovanidze won the elections with 5637 votes for. Tengiz Kalandadze, member of bloc For New Georgia, follows with 5619 votes for.



"REPUBLICANS" TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ELECTIONS IN JOINT BLOC WITH "NATIONAL MOVEMENT", "UNION OF NATIONAL POWERS" AND "UNITED DEMOCRATS"

Tbilisi, 23 January ’04, Prime-News. - ". As the leader of "Republican Party" David Berdzenishvili "Republican Party" will participate in the March 28 repeated parliamentary elections in joint bloc with "United National Movement" and "Union of National Powers told Prime-News, "Republicans" have nothing against the joint participation in the elections with "United Democrats". According to Berdzenishvili, working on the election lists has not begun yet. As he noted, "Republicans" will not have special claims for the quantity on the list, though all "Republicans" entered in the list would be well-known experts for the society. "Republican Party" participated in the November 2 parliamentary election in joint bloc with "United National Movement" and "Union of National Powers", which was called "Saakashvili - National Movement".


SECONDARY MAJORITY ELECTIONS IN CHIATURA WILL BE HELD ON MARCH 7

Tbilisi. 21 January ’04, Caucasus Press. - The Central Election Commission of Georgia appointed the secondary majority elections in Chiatura election district on March 7. At the same time CEC appealed to President of Georgia with the request to hold the elections on March 28 together with the parliamentary elections according to proportional system. The secondary elections in Chiatura are appointed due to the fact the Supreme Court of Georgia acknowledged results of the majority elections on January 17 invalid.



CEC INCREASES STAFFS OF DISTRICT ELECTION COMMISSIONS

Tbilisi. 21 January ’04, Caucasus Press. - CEC increases number of district election commissions. Today at the sitting of the CEC the decision has been made to add per one assistant to chairman of the commission in districts where there are over 30 wards. Their salaries will be GEL100. Thus amount of assets for parliamentary elections will be increased by GEL7.500.


MAJORITY ELECTIONS IN TWO SINGLE-MANDATE DISTRICTS TO BE HELD JANUARY 25

Tbilisi. 21 January ’04, Caucasus Press. - Repeated majority elections will be held in two single-mandate districts January 25. The CEC told CAUCASUS PRESS that Valeri Gelashvili, candidate from and Simon Nozadze, candidate from the former presidential bloc will run for parliament in the village of Plevi, Khashuri region of Georgia. The elections in this district were initially appointed for January 4, but were frustrated by local residents who demanded to suspend the precinct electoral commission. Roman Tevdoradze, Labor Party of Georgia and Malkhaz Sandroshvili, New Rights will spar in Aspindza electoral district. The CEC will define the date of majority elections in the Bolnisi district in several days.


JONDI BAGATURIA AGAINST BRINGING DOWN THE ELECTION BARRIER

Tbilisi, 20 January ’04, Prime-News. - One of the leaders of "Labor Party" Jondi Bagaturia is against bringing down the election barrier from 7 to 5% before the March 28 repeated parliamentary elections. As Jondi Bagaturia told Prime-News, 7% election barrier supports union of the political organizations with similar ideologies. He believes that the argument, according to which only political bloc of "United National Movement" and "United Democrats" would be able to gain majority in the parliament is unacceptable, because even in case of reducing election barrier, they will gain majority of mandates. According to Bagaturia, "Labor Party" will not face problems with overcoming 7% election barrier on March 28, but hard work is necessary for showing serious results. Chairman of the Central Election Commission Zurab Chiaberashvili supports the Constitutional amendment - reduction of the election barrier from 7 to 5%. The elections barrier was increased from 5 to 7% prior to the 1999 parliamentary elections under the initiative of the former leader of "National-Democratic Party" Irina Sarishvili-Chanturia.



SUPREME COURT OF GEORGIA PASSED THE RESOLUTION ON HOLDING OF REPEATED MAJORITY ELECTIONS IN CHIATURA DISTRICT

Tbilisi, 19 January ‘04, Black Sea Press. - Supreme Court of Georgia rejected appeal of supporters of the candidate for majority MP Sergo Yakobidze and passed the resolution on holding the repeated majority elections in Chiatura district. Supporters of the candidate Sergo Yakobidze demanded from Central Election Commission (CEC) to annul the resolution of CEC on cancellation of the results of majority elections in Chiatura and to hold repeated vote at the second round where Sergo Yakobidze, independent candidate, and Tengiz Motsradze, member of bloc For New Georgia, were the rivals.
