Robb Engel, a student at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, who has discovered and assisted in the description of a new species of organism. Mr. Engel is the first author of the scientific article that describes this species, which belongs to a single-celled algal group. The new species was found in the drilling core from an area near Hawaii, from a depth of about 212 meters below the sea floor, and it is about 44 million years old. We extend our congratulations to Mr. Engel and his professor of geology, Dr. Kevin McCartney, who established the Micropaleontology Undergraduate Research Laboratory program at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on all their hard work, and we send them our best wishes on their future research; (HLS 655)
the Glenburn Lakeside Riders Snowmobile Club, on being named as the 2005 Snowmobile Club of the Year by the Maine Snowmobile Association. Joseph R. Annie Mae Scruton Beck, of Gray, on the occasion of her 100th birthday, May 5, 2005. Mrs. Beck married Henry W. Beck on September 24, 1927. They have 2 children. Mrs. Beck assisted her husband in delivering babies and was also his anesthesiologist. She has served the community of Gray generously. She was chair of the Christmas Caravan for more then 35 years, served on the Town Council for 6 years and was active in many local issues. She is also an active member of the First Congregational Church. She reads the newspaper daily to stay up on community and state politics. Nancy Hutton, of South Portland, Principal of Cape Elizabeth Middle School, on the occasion of her retirement. She has 35 years of educational service, with 25 of those years devoted to Cape Elizabeth, where she was a language arts teacher for 10 years and then served 15 years as Principal. In addition, she has taught Adolescent Literature as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Maine and has shared her expertise many times in workshops around the State. Ms. Hutton has served as a Distinguished Educator at the state level, working on certification issues. Joseph Cooney, of Norway, who has been made an Honorary Life Member by American Legion Foster-Carroll Post 72. This is the highest honor that an American Legion Post bestows. Mr. Cooney, who now serves as Chair of the Western Maine Veterans' Advisory Committee, is known as a "champion of veterans' affairs." He has served as Commander of Foster-Carroll Post 72 and as Commander of the Veterans' of Foreign Wars Post 9787 and remains active in both organizations. Mr. Cooney has improved the lives and welfare of veterans and their families and this State is truly grateful for his efforts. John O'Leary, of Portland, beloved family man, faithful public servant and distinguished son of Maine, who served as United States Ambassador to Chile from 1998 to 2001. Born in Portland, he was a proud graduate of Cheverus High School in 1965. At Yale University he earned his B.A. in 1969 and his Juris Doctor in 1974. Devoted to his native city, he was instrumental in the expansion of the Portland Museum of Art and construction of the new Portland Public Library, earning both institutions distinction as regional centers of the arts and culture in Northern New England. He served as Mayor of Portland from 1980 to 1981 and in 1998 was named ambassador to Chile by President Clinton, his former classmate at Yale. He served as President of the Chilean-American Chamber of Commerce and on the advisory boards of the Yale World Fellows Program and the George Washington University Latin American Studies Program, providing opportunities for youth studies in world economy and government. He will be sadly missed by his family, his wide circle of international friends and the citizens of Portland, Longfellow's beloved city "that is seated by the sea." Philip E. Simard, Sr., of Portland, beloved father, friend and member of the Portland Police Department. Born in Portland, the son of Ernest P. Simard, Sr. and Gwendolyn Cornish Simard, he was educated in Portland schools and for 15 years served the Portland Police Department as Animal Control Officer. He received a Unit Citation in 1999 and in 2002 was recognized by the Portland Police Department for "dedication and loyal service to the Department and the citizens of the City of Portland." Outgoing and pleasant, he was devoted to the welfare of all animals in his charge and remained on duty to the day of his unfortunate passing. We acknowledge his dedicated service to his profession and his community. Kenneth W. Palmer, of Portland, a longtime resident and educator. Mr. Palmer was a graduate of Portland High School and received his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Southern Maine. He received his master's degree in library science from Utah State University and a degree in accounting from McIntosh College. He was employed by the Portland School Department for 18 years, teaching English and later becoming librarian at Lincoln Middle School. He was the swimming coach for the middle schools and at Deering High School for several years. He was also a member of the Southwestern Maine Swimming Officials Association, and, in 2002, the association established the Ken Palmer Inspirational Award, which is presented to the "Most Courageous Swimmer." Mr. Palmer established the Signet Tax Service, which he owned and operated, and was an enrolled agent. He served as secretary with the Maine Chapter, National Association of Tax Practitioners from 1996 to 2000, and in 2003 he served as its president. Reverend Lynne Josselyn, of Caribou, upon her retirement as pastor of the Gray Memorial Methodist Church. She has more than 40 years' experience as a pastor, chaplain, district superintendent, administrator and seminary faculty member. the Honorable Steve Zirnkilton, of Seal Harbor, who served in the Maine House of Representatives for 4 terms representing Seal Harbor, for his successful career as a voice-over announcer for television, radio and films. He appeared as a detective in the pilot program of the series. Mr. Zirnkilton's voice work career has spanned a variety of shows, including "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno, "Dateline," "CNN Headline News" and "The Today Show." Gary V. Moulton, of York, upon his passing on April 21, 2005. He started his own successful small business, G.V. Moulton Plumbing and Heating, 20 years ago. His humor, kindness, strong work ethic and love of family and community will be greatly missed. He was to have been recognized by members of York's St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge as Mason of the Decade during an early May ceremony, but will be honored posthumously by the group in June to commemorate his life. F. Henry (Hank) Sabourin, Sr., of Lewiston. Mr. Sabourin was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving his country during both the Korean War and the Vietnam War, until his retirement as a captain in December, 1970. He retired to Lewiston and spent 10 years with Northeast Bank, serving as branch manager and later as assistant vice president. After retiring from the bank, he worked several years for Fortin Funeral Directors and The Fortin Group Funeral Homes. His many years of community involvement included being a former Lewiston police commissioner, a member of the Lewiston Board of Appeals and member and chair of the Lewiston Board of Personnel (Civil Service Commission).
